Abstract

Learning, which focuses on higher-level thinking skills, can be applied in the physical education curriculum through games and sports, movement education, and outdoor education. This study aims to produce a learning model that effectively improves the physical fitness and critical thinking skills of students. Purposive sampling was used in selecting research sample members in which 308 (M: 153 and F: 155) fifth-grade students participated in this study. Two groups were selected as research subjects divided into small groups for the first stage test (N: 123; M: 56; F: 67; Average age: 10.82) and large groups for the second stage test (N: 185; M: 97; F: 88; Average age: 10.70). Five indicators of critical thinking skills were measured through a critical thinking skills instrument. Meanwhile, the indicators of physical fitness tests include BMI, Sit and Reach, Sit-Up, Trunk Lift, and PACER 20-M. The results showed that physical education, oriented towards peer observation carried out during the learning process, self-assessment carried out by students, and packed in the circuit learning method is proven to improve critical thinking skills and physical fitness.

Abstract

The ability of the Muslim community in Indonesia to perform the hajj pilgrimage, which fulfills Islam’s fifth pillar, is increasing. With the rise in life expectancy, the number of Indonesian elderly hajj pilgrims (EHP) is consequently growing. However, chronic conditions such as impairments, illnesses, and diseases cause an increase in morbidity and mortality among EHP. Thus, an innovative training program with practical tips for a healthy hajj experience is needed to improve the healthcare service to the EHP. This study aims to investigate the effects of an innovative training on the performance of Hajj Healthcare Workers of Indonesia (HHWI) and on the clinical outcomes of EHP. It was a quasi-experimental study. The population was all HHWI from the Surakarta embarkation in 2014. Meanwhile, the sample of this study was all 21 HHWI from Yogyakarta who received innovative training consisting of EHP special care training (theory and practice) in addition to basic national training. Twenty-one HHWI from Surakarta were randomly chosen as a control group and only received basic national training. Pre and post tests were used to assess knowledge of HHWI after training. The average pretest scores of the intervention and control groups were 48.50 and 48.07, respectively (p= 0.337), while the posttest score of the intervention group was 86.83 (p = 0.033). The measured parameters were the performance of HHWI, which is reflected by the EHP mortality rate, the number of outpatients, and the number of patients referred to the outpatients. We included the EHP under the supervision of HHWI, which has acquired training. EHP morbidity was evaluated as the number of outpatients and referred patients. There were 2216 outpatients from the intervention group as compared with 2144 in the control group, with most of them being 60-70 years old (p= 0,075). The number of referred EHP in the intervention and control groups was 10 and 30 patients, respectively (OR 2.94; p= 0.002). As for the mortality cases, we observed 7 EPH deaths during the hajj period (2 EPH from the intervention group vs 5 EPH from the control group; OR 0.263; p=0.207). Innovative training could reduce referral morbidity and mortality among elderly hajj pilgrims

Abstract

As problems of intolerance and disrespect of human rights escalate in this modern world, raising public awareness on human rights is considered an inevitable task for all. Intervention of promoting human rights in education field is believed to be playing an important role to address the problems. This study wants to collect information from its research subjects on the extent to which topics of human rights are being learned and taught in higher education institutions, and on the degree of effectiveness of different methods used to learn and teach human rights in higher education institutions, as to develop human rights knowledge and understanding of students. This study uses the technique of homogenous purposive sampling to determine the research subject. The research subjects are (1) students who take the course subject of Human Rights or Citizenship and (2) lecturers who teach either the course subject of Human Rights or Citizenship, in any higher education institutions in Indonesia. The questionnaire is developed using Google Form, and is distributed online. As the result of the survey for 445 students and 72 teachers of Indonesian higher educational institutions, most of them are familiar with the concept of human rights. The most significant sources of information on human rights are university lecturers, mass media, official documents, and publications. The most important level of education to receive knowledge and build understanding on human rights are secondary education, higher education, elementary education, and vocational education. General human rights, right to freedom of religion and belief, and right to education are fully developed. More of other rights, such as rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ), rights of migrants, rights of internally displaced persons, and rights of the poor, are expected to be more developed than they are now. The most effective methods are field visit/excursions, watching films, problem solving, and case studies. The least effective methods are arts (drawing and singing), writing essays and stories, and games.

Abstract

This study aimed to highlight the view of educators on the teachers’ willingness to change in adapting to online learning due to the Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID -19) pandemic. The sudden shifting required readiness to facilitate both synchronous and asynchronous learning interactions. The results of previous studies on the dissatisfaction with the online learning quality during the pandemic triggered this study. Teachers preferred to use task-based learning and resisted incorporating technology in the learning process. The limited literature provided a study gap investigated in the present study. Therefore, the real-time virtual focus group discussions were carried out to obtain viewpoints about teachers’ willingness to change in which 31 participants, including teachers, principals, and supervisors, shared their viewpoints. Moreover, dynamic discussions were conducted through brainstorming using Mentimeter, collecting viewpoints via zoom poll, and discussion engagements in the primary and breakout rooms. Content analysis revealed three categories: willingness to learn, try, and be open. The result provided novelty essential as a new perspective and proposed possible solutions to address the problems shifting from regular to online learning in Indonesia. Finally, this study recommends future investigation of teachers’ willingness to change as a new concept of professional development in establishing quality learning.

Abstract

Teachers are required to be aware of their students' perceptions of physical education in addition to their own perceptions of the subject's current teaching experience. The qualitative approach is the approach used in this study with the constant comparison method by coding, categorizing, and finding themes in the interview transcripts. The results of this study were designed to find out students' perceptions of physical education and teaching difficulties in 63 elementary schools in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A cross-sectional sample included 127 students (1st to 3rd graders of the elementary schools) and their physical education teachers (n = 68). Most students agreed they like sports or physical activities (95.6%). Few students like game-based physical education activities (18.89%). Most teachers showed great perception toward multilateral movement (70.58%). Students preferred to learn physical education through games and that they believed learning the subject has brought many benefits such as having a stronger and healthier body and increasing their motivation to be an outstanding athlete. Teachers had learned multilateral movement but they were still limited by their low capacity to create engaging learning experiences and manage students in the learning processes

Abstract

Families living in slum areas are exposed to dense population and low income, both of which are conditions that make it difficult to meet the educational needs of their children. This article describes the involvement of parents in educating their children at home and at school. The study was carried out using ethnographic methods with 33 marginal families as informants. Marginal families who have children of elementary school age in grades 5 and 6, especially those living on the outskirts or banks of the Winongo and Code rivers, 3 large rivers that seem to divide the city of Yogyakarta, were included in this study. Data were collected using interviews, observations and focus groups. The results of the study show parental involvement as a form of transformation of knowledge systems, values, attitudes and skills. This often occurs in a patterned manner, repeatedly using examples, sometimes coercion as educational praxis at home and school in specific social environment situations. The daily interaction between parents and children in parent-child conversations tends to be instructive and emphasizes compliance to fulfill children's educational needs.

Abstract

The competencies possessed by teachers have not been as expected, as evidenced by the average value of pedagogic competencies, which are still low compared to the results of professional competence scores on the Teacher Competency Test. This study aimed to develop a model for improving the pedagogic competence of Physical Education teachers which was arranged into a module that contains how to develop a learning implementation plan, how to create and use the learning media, how to create and use the teaching materials, and how to prepare and implement the learning assessments. The development tests that were carried out were: 1) alpha test, 2) beta test, and 3) final product validation. The alpha test is a product validation test by three experts, while the beta test is a load and product suitability test involving 27 teachers and 3 supervisors, followed by a final product validation stage involving 84 teachers who are divided into two groups, namely experimental and control. The research instruments used were a questionnaire and a competency improvement scale. The data analysis techniques used are quantitative descriptive data analysis, gain score data analysis, and t-test. Based on the results of the assessment at the alpha test, beta test, and program validation stages, the resulting product was declared suitable for use as a teaching material set. Furthermore, through the process of testing the effectiveness of the product, the model of increasing pedagogic competence based on teaching materials is proven to be effective and can significantly improve the pedagogic competence of Physical Education teachers.
