Abstract

Dried chillies arepotential to substitute fresh chillies when the price of fresh chillies significantly increases, and its purchases were expected to determine by the household consumer’s attitude. The aims of this researchare 1) to examine the household attitudes on dried chilies purchasing bythe Theory of Planned Behavior approach, 2) to determine the determinant factors ofdried chilli buying intention, and 3) to estimate the cross-elasticity of dried chili againsts fresh chilli. The results showed that household consumer attitude towards the purchase of dried chillies, in term of subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and purchase intention,  are in medium category. The determinant factors on purchase intention of dried chilies (α = 10 percent) are the subjective norms, attitudes towards the purchase of dried chilies, and household income per month. The dried chilli cross-elasticity valueis very inelastic (0.069). Due to that, the policy implications in encouraging the dried chilli purchasing are the socialization of the dried chilli’s benefits and sustain the avaibility of dried chillies in traditional markets.

Abstract

Sweet potato is one of carbohydrat source to support the diversification food program. However, its productivity is still low and decreasing. It is caused by inefficiency in cultivation technique. The purposes of this research are to analyze farming revenue and to analyze factors affecting business and technical efficiency of sweet potato farming. Sampling method was conducted by proportional random sampling and the number of sample used was 30 people. The methods are revenue cost ration (R/C), break event point (BEP) and frontier production function estimated by MLE with Cobb-Douglas production function. The result shows cash revenue to cost ratio of 1.69 and total revenue to cost ratio of 1.23 which confirm the notion of efficient and lucrative. Price BEP is 772.60 rupiahs per kg and unit BEP is 15291.80 kg per hectare. The farming price and production are more than BEP which show profitability. Frontier production function shows all variables are significant and positive except N fertilizer. The results show farming efficiency index of 0.52 to 0.99 averaged on 0.75. One third respondents have efficiency index below 0.70. The results shows positive and significant correlation of farming experience, side job and land ownership to technical efficiency. Farmer’ age, education, revenue of non-farming activities and farming training/counseling have negative and non significant correlation.

Abstract

The objectives of the research are (1) to analyze the income of sweetpotatoes farming in Cikarawang Village, (2) to analyze factors that influence the sweetpotatoes production, and (3) to analyze the technical efficiency sweetpotatoes farming. Research are carried out during March-April of 2012 in Cikarawang Village, Bogor District, West Java. The primary dataareobtained through interview with 35 sweetpotatoes farmers. To analyze the data, the stochastic frontier production function approach and farming income analysis are applied. The result shows that, first, the income of farmers with land more than 0,5 hectare are Rp 12.344.377 per hectare per season. However, farmersthat own less than 0,5 hectare only obtained Rp 1.909.161 per hectare per season. Second, the R/C quotient of sweetpotatoes production that reach >1shows that the sweetpotatoes production are profitable. Third, factors that influence the sweetpotatoes production are land size, labor, fertilizer, and pesticide. Fourth, the average technical efficiency that reach 0.564 shows thatthe sweetpotatoes farming onlyreach 56.4 percent of the maximum productivity. The research reveals that low technical efficiency of the sweetpotatoes farming are related with experience and age of the farmer. To increase the sweetpotatoes production, government should strongly promote and disseminate the production innovation and post harvest technology.
