Abstract

The objectives of this paper are (1) to analyze the relationship of “dust grade” tea price at Jakarta, Colombo and Guwahati Tea Auction Markets, and (2) to perform Vector Autoregression (VAR) models in order to forecast the “dust grade” tea price at Jakarta Tea Auction Market. Grade dust tea is used to make the tea bag. The average weekly price of dust grade tea from the third week of February 2009 until the second week of April 2011 was used in this analysis. The results showed that firstly, there was no significant price transmission from Colombo and Guwahati Tea Auction Markets to Jakarta Tea Auction Market. There was no significant co-integration among the three markets. As a matter of fact, the price of dust grade tea at Jakarta Tea Auction Market was affected by its price of one week earlier at its own market. Secondly, Naïve model was more accurate compared to VAR model in order to forecast the price of dust grade tea at Jakarta Tea Auction Market. Further research is needed in order to perform the more accurate forecasting model to predict the price of dust grade tea at Jakarta Tea Auction Market.

Abstract

Today, Indonesia is still export fresh agriculture product with low selling price and competitive power than processed product with higher selling price.  The condition also observed for sweet potato that exported in the fresh form with low selling price and in turn lowering the competitive power of this product.  Province of West Java is one of sweet potato production center.  In 2009, “Cilembu” sweet potato becomes leading product of this commodity group that mostly produced in Subang Regency.  Market destination of “Cilembu” is not only for  domestic demand but also exported to many destination countries including Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Hongkong, and Singapore, but selling in the fresh form.  Due to the large potential, it is important to examine the competitive power of the commodity and effect of government policy on “Cilembu” farming in Subang Regency.  The research study was selected on purposive basis. The data analyzed using Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM) and sensitivity analysis. The result indicated that “Cilembu” farming in Sumedang Regency is profitable both financial and economic and has good competitive power (either comparative or competitive advantage).  Government policy on domestic input is not effective yet because producer must pay higher price on the input than it should be.  The policy is effective for tradable input due to subsidy. Output policy has restrictive nature due to export taxes and no subsidy for the commodity. Sensitivity analysis show that increasing of labor wage and changing on exchange rate is not affect competitive and comparative advantage, while decreasing on output will affect on competitive advantage (comparative advantage still exist).

Abstract

One of horticultural commodities which contribute significantly to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is vegetables. Agropolitan Cianjur is one vegetable producing areas in Indonesia with the priority commodity of carrots and leeks. Farmers in the area of Cianjur agropolitan face the constraints in production fluctuations from the two commodities which indicate a production risk. Therefore, we need to analyze the production risk of carrot and leek  in the region of Cianjur agropolitan andto  analyze the alternative of risk management handlin gin  the production of carrot and leek that can be applied in the region of Cianjur agropolitan. The method used to analyze the level of production risk in carrots and leeks is variance, standard deviation, and coefficient variation That tools can find the alternative production of risk management. Base on the return of productivity, production risk of carrots is 26 percent and lees is 29 percent. The Alternative of risk management is, first, farmers should irrigate carrot and leeks in the dry season and use plastic mulch for leeks. Second, farmers should implement the Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Third, farmers must do proper fertilization and rotate the cropping pattern well. Fourth, farmers must use appropriate input variables according to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Fifth, the government must improve training and extension in cultivation of carrots and leeks and also increase the oversight of the farmers performance. Sixth, diversification by intercropping.

Abstract

Fisheries sector in Sukabumi can take potential role to act as the prime mover in developing the regional economy. However, its potency has not been optimized properly. It is expected that the low economic performance of fisheries sector are caused by the comparative advantage that was not fully transformed into competitive advantage. This study aims toidentify fisheries commodity that can be a superior comodity in Sukabumi and to analyze the competitiveness of superior fisheries commodity in Sukabumi. The analytical tools used in this research are Location Quotient (LQ) and Porters Diamond Theory. The results of study show that: (1) Kuwe, Tembang, Lisong, Cakalang, Albakora, Madidihang, Tuna Mata Besar, Layur, Kakap Putih, and Belanak have a comparative advantage in Sukabumi, and (2) superior fisheries commodity in Sukabumi do not have optimal competitiveness because there are constraints within each component of competitiveness. However, all these obstacles can be overcome with the role of government and the role of opportunities that support the advancement of fisheries sector.

Abstract

The development of rice agribusiness in Indonesia has a strategic position from the economic, social and political aspect. The availability of rice with an affordable price is the government concern through increasing production, productivity and quality. The development of aromatic rice of Pandan Wangi varieties has a big propect in filling the premium rice segment. The pandan wangi varieties is an indigenous varieties of Cianjur but is less favorable to farmers. This is caused by pandan wangi farming, using certified or non certified seed, is alocatively and economically inefficient, despite technically efficient. High Input price, especially seed, can not be supported by low output price. The government is needed to guarantee the availability of certified seed with lower price and controlled the price of unhulled rice and pandan wangi rice.

Abstract

Agriculture sector in developing country, including Indonesia, faces many problems such as scarcity in productive agriculture land and continuous increase of demand for food.  Karehkel Village - West Java plans to develop integrated farming system (IFS) to address this issues.  The farming system at Karehkel Village integrates organic vegetables, livestock, and produces organic fertilizer and manure.   The purpose of this research is to develop quantitative model of IFS at Desa Karehkel and to determine the economic benefit IFS.  Using the Linear Programming model the optimal solution shows that the farm profit of IFS is higher than the Non-IFS.  The maximum profit can be reached by integrating organic vegetables – waste vegetables – livestock – manure – organic fertilizer (Bokashi).  The optimal solution also indicated that the whole organic fertilizer product  should be sold to the market since the cost per unit of organic fertilizer was relatively high.  Imposing  the organic fertilizer as the  input of organic vegetables farming reduced IFS total profit.
