Abstract

Beef demand in Indonesian people is supplied from the domestic and import production, including Australia and New Zealand. Domestic Resources Cost (DRC) is one of the indicators in free trade that is defined as one of the competitiveness criteria. The competitiveness is determined by several factors, including resource, labor, technology and market demand. Based on the previous research results, it was obtained that: (1) The availability of abundant feed through the grazing system and crops livestock system can provide comparative advantage (DRC = 0.08-0.54); (2) The type of beef cattle kept had a good competitiveness (DRC = 0.08-0.94); (3) The labor’s wage can simultaneously create competitiveness (DRC<1); (4) The technological factor on farm level showed that the higher Average Daily Gain (ADG) will make the competitiveness increased; and (5) The number of cattle had a positive causality on the competitiveness with a coefficient of 0.510. The smallholder farmer with the average farming scale of three heads per farmer had a lower competitiveness (DRC = 0.08) compared to the cattle fattening company (DRC = 0.01-0.02). The existing research showed that the beef cattle farming in several places in Indonesia had good competitiveness (DRC<1), but in some areas, its value was close to one (less competitive). Therefore, in order to improve the competitiveness, the formulation and implementation of the farm subsector policy should be regarded as a system including upstream to downstream subsystems so it is expected that the coordination and synergy policy among stakeholder and economic actor will be better. Key words: Beef cattle, competitiveness, domestic resources cost

Abstract

Analisis struktur pasar ditentukan melalui rasio konsentrasi empat perusahaan terbesar (CR4) dan hambatan masuk pasar melalui nilai skala efisiensi minimum (Minimum Efficiency Scale/MES). Kata Kunci: Kopi Arabika Gayo, struktur pasar, integrasi pasar, harga, oligopsonistikArabica Gayo Coffee is the main commodity of Central Aceh and Bener Meriah regencies. Almost 86 percents of coffee bean produced from those areas is exported to the world market. Though the coffee price increased 17.18 percent at the exporter level during 2006 to 2012, but at the farm level the price of coffee decreased 1.73 percent. The purpose of this study was to analyze the structure and integration market of Arabica Gayo coffee. The data used was monthly time series of prices during 2008 to 2012. The analysis of market structure is determined by the concentration ratio of four large firms (CR4) and barriers to market entry through the Minimum Efficiency Scale (MES) value. The analysis of market integration used models that have been developed by Ravallion (1986). Research results showed that the market concentration ratio (CR4) at the exporter level was 71.12 percents and there were barriers to enter the Arabica Gayo coffee market with MES of 28.53 percents. These structural characteristics indicated that market structure is concentrated with a small level of competition. The market structure is oligopsonistic and there is a single marketing institution which determine the Arabica Gayo coffee price. This single institution is exporter. In addition, analysis of market integration showed that the coffee market at the farm level was not integrated with the exporter level in the long and short term. These analysis showed that the farmers are price taker.

Kata Kunci: Kakao, efisiensi produksi, stochastic frontier, teknologi fermentasiTabanan District is a cocoa production center in Bali by which the crops are mostly grown in small-scale and low in productivity as well. In this areafarmers had implemented fermentation process of cocoa beans to increase their income, although the technology was left. The objectives of this studywere: (1) to analyze the factors affecting the production of cocoa beans in Bali, and (2) to analyze efficiency of cocoa production by farmers in Bali, and (3) to analyze cocoa farm income for the farmers having implemented the fermentation technology. A questionnaire survey was conducted for 100cocoa farmers consisting of 60 farmers having implemented the fermentation technology and 40 farmers did not. Front 4.1 analysis was employed inorder to estimate the stochastic frontier production. The results showed that factors like labor, pesticides and land area had positive correlation inincreasing of cocoa production. In contrast, plant age had the negative correlation. In general small-scale cocoa farmers were efficient. In addition, the farmers who implemented the fermentation technology seemed to be less efficient compared to farmers who did not implement the technology. However, the farmers who implemented the fermentation technology seemed to have higher income of Rp. 5.014.877,44 being high compared tothose who did not implement the technology of Rp 4.654.809,24. The implementation of fermentation technology in cocoa beans could increasefarmers’ income.

Abstract

A deficiency of shallot seed production causes Indonesia could not meet its own local demand yet and thus imports foreign variety from other countries. However, farmer should choose between local and imported seed variety for their farming business activity. The purposes of the study was to analyze farmer decision and factors that determine farmer decision to utilize local and imported seed of shallot. Logistic regression was used to answer the research questions. Respondents were 60 persons divided into two groups, farmer who utilized local seed and that utilized the imported one. The result showed that the differences in decision making between local and imported farmers were the benefits they sought, while the factors that significantly influence the farmers decision to use local seed are scale of land area, seed price, income and market. Scale of land area and seed price have negative influence significantly, while income and market give positive influence significantly on farmer decision to utilize conventional seed.
