Abstract

Controlling the blood sugar level of DM patients is an approach to suppress morbidity and mortality. This study aims to know the relationship of four pillars of DM management with blood glucose levels and nutritional status in patients with type 2 DM in East Java. This study is a cross-sectional study with a sample of middle-aged type 2 DM outpatients in 4 cities in East Java, Indonesia. Four pillars of management include education profile, food planning, physical exercise, and drug adherence. The statistical analysis used was Partial Least Square. The results of the study show that four pillars were not associated with fasting blood glucose (FBG) level and 2-hour PPG in the total number of respondents (p>0.005). Interestingly, dietary intake links to 2-Hour PPG in 40-50 years age group (p=0.000) and was associated with body mass index in the total number of respondents (p=0.000). Furthermore, education profile and medication also related to FBG in 40-50 years age group (p=0.000, p=0,003). In conclusion, the success of the four pillars in controlling DM is affected by age.  In 40-50 years age group, there is an influence of education profile and drug adherence on the level of FBG.

Abstract

Objective: To determine the effect of Bryophyllum pinnatum treatment in modulating immune response and the pregnancy outcomes of pregnant pristane-induced lupus mice model. Methods: Sixteen Balb/c mice were intraperitoneally injected with single 0.5 cc pristane to induce lupus manifestations. After 12 weeks of injection, mice were mated and considered as gestational day 0 (GD0). Mice were divided into 4 groups based on the dosages of Bryophyllum pinnatum: control (no treatment), B1 (10.5 mg/kg), B2 (21 mg/kg), and B3 (42 mg/kg). The treatment was given orally every day started from GD9 until 9 days. At the end of the study, blood pressure and fetal size were measured. Serum anti-dsDNA and urine albumin levels were measured by ELISA. Spleen T helper (Th) and mature B cells percentages were measured by flow cytometry. Results: Administration of Bryophyllum pinnatum reduced the percentages of Th1 (p=0.006), Th2 (p=0.005), Th17 (p=0.000), and mature B cells (p=0.007) in dose-dependent manner. B1 and B2 had significantly lower of systolic blood pressure compared to control (p=0.026 and p=0.022 respectively). Significantly lower of anti-dsDNA levels were found in B1 group compared to control (p=0.014). However, no significantly different of urine albumin levels were found between groups. Bryophyllum pinnatum also significantly increased the fetus body weight in dose-dependent manner (p=0.000).Conclusion: Treatment of Bryophyllum pinnatum could improve the pregnancy outcome and modulate the immune response in pregnant pristane-induced lupus mice. Therefore, Bryophyllum pinnatum is a potential herb which can be developed as an immunosuppressive agent in the future.

Abstract

Indonesian waters have six types of turtles that can live, spawn and breed. Sea turtle conservation becomes an important and urgent program to be done in order to protect and save sea turtle population in Indonesia. One of the factors that most affect the turtle population is the cause of degradation of pathogenic factors. Alas Purwo National Park, East Java, there is some communities that have activities turtle conservation. Conservation is done by securing and protecting turtle eggs. Turtle eggs that have hatched are released into the sea once it is ready. This study aims was to determine the type of bacteria and fungi that infect hatchlings and environmental factors that influence. This research is descriptive method to Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricate) is by way of random sampling. Sampling of microbes in sea turtle was conducted using cotton swab method and then microbes was cultured and indentified in laboratory. The results showed The kind of parasites and microbes which were indentified in hatching and adult Hawksbill sea turtles were fungus with genus Aspergillus sp., Geotrichum sp., Fusarium sp., and Gliocladium sp. ; bacteria are Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacter cloaceae; and parasite is Chelonibia testudinaria barnacles.  The parameter average value of water in pond indicated 28.1 – 29.2°C for temperature, 32 - 34 ‰ for salinity, 7.78 – 8.2 for pH, and 3.86 – 4.21 mg/L for DO.

Abstract

The study was designed to establish an experimental models of metabolic syndrome that adequately mimic metabolic syndrome criteria as determined by NCEP ATP III.Eighteen Male Sprague dawley rats, 2 - 3 months old were used in the study. Combination of high fat and high sucrose (HFHS) diet for eight weeks and streptozotocin (STZ) injection in the second week was administered to induce metabolic syndrome. The body weight and biochemical parameters (blood glucose, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol) were measured every 2 weeks. The rats with blood glucose (>126mg/dL), triglyceride (TG) (>150mg/dL), high systolic blood pressure (≥140 mmHg), and reduced HDL levels (<40 mg/dL) confirmed presence NCEP-ATP III criteria of metabolic syndrome. The adiponectin level was analyzed by ELISA methods.Fasting blood glucose, triglyceride, and systolic blood pressure increased significantly (p<0.05) in HFHS group compared to that of NC group. Moreover, after 8 week a significant lower HDL level was observed in HFHS group compared to that of NC group. In addition, HFHS group showed a significantly lower adiponectin level compared to that of NC group. The combination of low doses of STZ (30mg/kg) and HFHS administration for 8 weeks could induce metabolic syndrome mimicking human criteria of metabolic syndrome.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to isolate the antioxidative peptide from Spirulina platensis. Peptide was obtained by proteolytic digestion, ultrafiltration, fractionation by RP-HPLC, identified by LC-MS/MS—MASCOT Distiller and measured its antioxidant activity by DPPH (2.2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay. Results showed that thermolysin was the most effective enzyme to digest this algae. The active peptide Phe-Ser-Glu-Ser-Ser-Ala-Pro-Glu-Gln-His-Tyr (m/z 1281.51) was identified and synthetized, which exhibited 45.98 ± 1.7% at concentration 128.15 µg/mL. Therefore, S. platensis is indicated as a potential therapeutic source for combating oxidative stress.

Abstract

The Bali Cattle in Southeast Sulawesi its productivity is influenced by the seasonal environmental conditions. The objective of this study was to analyze the performance production of cows Bali Cattle and its calves that were born on different season (rainy season and dry season) as well as on different types of land. The research methods applied were survey and observation method. The variables being observed follows: body weight (BWT), daily body weight gain (PBBH), body condition score (BCS) and birth weight (BW). Data were analyzed by using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) of nested design. The result of the research indicated that the average of body weight, daily body weight gain, BCS and birth weight was higher during the rainy season compared to the dry season. The average of body weight, daily body weight gain, and BCS was higher on paddy field. On the contrary, the birth weight on dry area was higher than it was on wetlands. The average of male cattle birth weight was higher than the average of female cattle. It could be concluded that the cow’s working performance production was affected by the feed consumption and environments (season and the type of land). On the other hand, calf birth weight was affected by sexes, in addition it was also related to cow’s feed intake on late pregnancy phase.
