Abstract

This research tried to investigate the effect of imaginative play in metacognition of math among children with intelligence as the covariable. Method used in this study was quasi experiment using the untreated controlled group design with dependent pretest and posttest samples. There were three groups used in this study, which were: Experiment Group 1, this group was given storytelling as the treatment, Experiment Group 2, this group was given pretending plays as the treatment, and Group 3 is a control group. Metacognition was measured with Metacognitive Skills and Knowledge Assessment developed by Desoete, Roeyers, & Buysse (2001), meanwhile intelligence was measured with Standard Progressive Matrices developed by Raven. Using the statistic of ancova, the result showed the value of F 12.526 (p<0.05) meaning that by controlling intelligence, it was found that there was an effect of imaginative play to metacognition. Based on pairwise comparison it was found that: a) there was a significant difference of metacognition between the group 1 (storytelling as the treatment) and group 3 (control group), b) there was a significant difference of metacognition between the group 1 (storytelling as the treatment) and group 2 (pretending play as the treatment), but 3) there was no significant difference of metacognition between the group 2 (pretending play as the treatment and group 3 (control group). It was found that the effective contribution of imaginative play to the variance of metacognition was 29.5% (R squared=0.295) and effective contribution of intelligence to the variance of metacognition was 10.7% (R squared= 0.107).Keywords: imaginative play, storytelling, pretending play, metacognition

Abstract

This research aimed to develop a model of literacy stimulation for preschool children in order to meet their needs and to overcome parents’ problems in stimulating literacy in their children at home. The data of children’s needs and parents’ problem were obtained from questionnaires and focus group discussion. The questionnaires were filled by 75 mothers whose children aged 3-5 years old in Surakarta. Then, 26 of them attended focused group discussion. The data obtained showed that there was a problem in these children’s early literacy development. Most of them were lack of interest in literacy activities and mostof the parents were unable to attract their children’s attention and interest. The problem faced by the parents was the lack of skill in selecting and doing literacy activities in accordance with their children’s needs. A multisensory model was designed to improve pre-school children’s interest in early development of literacy and to increase parents’ skill in stimulating their children’s interest.

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying and understanding more deeply the self-regulated learning of students with a high GPA, who had multiple roles (as housewives and workers also). The approach employed in this study was the qualitative-phenomenological approach. The subjects of the study were selected by purposive sampling technique and the data were collected using techniques of observations and in-depth interviews. The results indicated that the four subjects conducted self-regulation in learning through regulating cognition, motivation, behavior, and emotion. Moreover, the subjects performed context regulation in order to achieve certain learning objectives. Self-regulated learning performed by the subjects was influenced by specific precipitating situations and the characteristics of each related individual. It was also strengthened by social support given to them.
