Abstract

Indonesia need to strengthen the national economy to face the AEC (ASEAN Economic Community) in the end of 2015 by growing Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) which has entrepreneurial characteristics. Currently there is an increasing activity of women in SMEs. This research aimed at identifying and analyzing the forming factors of women’s entrepreneurial activities that contribute to grow new enterprise on processed potato business.This study is located in Kerinci regency because there were increased entrepreneurial activity by women. Primary data were collected through questionnaire to 111 women entrepreneurs of potato processing by the sampling “census” technique, and the data were analyzed by Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The exogenous latent variables were entrepreneurial characteristics, personal characteristics, opportunity, and resources. Where as women’s entrepreneurial activities and grow new enterprise as endogenous latent variables. The results showed that the built model had goodness fit and good reliability measurement variables (CR≥0.70, VE≥0.50). Women entrepreneurial activities were reflected the most by resources (γ=0.66) and entrepreneurial characteristics (γ=0.59). Entrepreneurial characteristics of women entrepreneur were formed by motivation (λ= 0.54), risk taking (λ= 0.32), and innovation (λ= 0.95). Thus women who processing potatoes in Kerinci regency have the entrepreneurial character. Women’s entrepreneurial activities positively proved contribute to grow new enterprise on processed potato business (β=0.95). Facilitating new venture program, strengthening of capital program, and business training to women entrepreneurs should be a priority of the Indonesian government programs in the future to compete in the AEC (ASEAN Economic Community).

Abstract

This research aims to: (1) identify characteristics and competencies of beef cattle farmer, and (2) analyze the influence of characteristics through competencies of farmer on business performance of beef cattle farm in Bandung Regency. In this research, the farmer characteristics consist of personal and psychological characteristic, whereas the competencies consist of technical and entrepreneurial competency. This research used 121 data of beef cattle farmers that collected by proportional cluster sampling according to the central areas of the farm, namely Cikancung, Cimenyan, and Cimaung Districts. The data were analyzed by SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) analysis. The results showed that both characteristics positively and significantly influence both competencies, and also have an indirect effect on business performance by technical competency. Psychological characteristic (need for achievement as a strong predictor) more influential on competencies than personal characteristic (informal education as a strong predictor). Technical competency (managing marketing and input as a strong predictor) positively (γ=0.81) and significantly influence the business performance (productivity as a strong predictor), while the influence of entrepreneurial competency is not significant. Indirectly, psychological characteristic (0.56) more influential on business performance than personal characteristic (0.29). The implication, beef cattle productivity can be increased by improving technical competency, especially for managing marketing and input. This competency can be improved by increasing need for achievement and active participation of farmers in attending the counseling/training by giving them rewards.

Abstract

Micro and small enterprises (MSE) is a dominant business form in Indonesia with the percentage up to 90%. However, there is a tendency that the entrepreneur is identified to large scale of business. The purpose of this study were (1) identify the characteristics of entrepreneurs in MSE industry (2) analyze the effect of entrepreneurial characteristics and the business climate for entrepreneurial behavior (3) analyze the effect of entrepreneurial behavior on its performance. Purposive sampling technique was applied to select 121 respondent. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to estimate entrepreneurial behavior. The results of this study showed that entrepreneurial characteristics was found on the MSE, furthermore  stronger entrepreneurial characteristics was found on the large scale production. There is a positive and significant relationship between entrepreneurial characteristics and the business climate for entrepreneurial behavior. Entrepreneurial characteristics was influencing the most on the behavior of entrepreneurs. In addition entrepreneurial behavior was also positive and significant influence on its business performance. Thus, this study confirmed that entrepreneurial behavior was also found in small businesses, not only in large enterprises.

Abstract

Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) has an important role in the national economy. Many MSMEs in Indonesia are family businesses, one of them is “tofu” production in Bogor. Although these businesses are constrained by the prices of raw materials, most of them can survive. The purpose of this study were (1) to analyze the characteristics of the “tofu” business (2) analyze the influence of the family and the economic environment on the performance of the “tofu” business. 114 respondents are collected using purposive sampling method. Data are analyzed using the approach of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). This study shows that based on the revenue, “tofu” businesses are micro, small and medium enterprises. The results also suggest that the culture and economic environment significantly affect the business performance. Culture can improve business performance, while the economic environment can decrease the business performance.

Abstract

Lampung Province is one of the coffee producing. This is because the topology of the region is very suitable for the fertility of coffee plants. The majority of coffee farmers in Indonesia carry out farming activities in rural areas with small business scale and limited access to innovation, capital, management, technology and information. One factor that causes farmers to be competitive in the context of entrepreneurship at the farmer level is the lack of entrepreneurial skills for farmers, so farmers who are engaged in the agribusiness sector, especially in the upstream subsystem, are very difficult to align with an entrepreneur in the non-agribusiness sector. The lack of entrepreneurial character and entrepreneurial capacity such as entrepreneurial skills is what causes farmers to be less competitive, which results in the agribusiness sector not being able to develop optimally. Adoption of farmers to agricultural technology is determined by their need for the level of technology offered and the suitability of technology for environmental, biophysical, and socio-cultural conditions in an area. The purpose of this study was to determine the general description and profile of Lampung coffee farmers, to find out the entrepreneurial characteristics of Lampung coffee farmers, and to analyze the characteristics, channels and stages of adoption of innovative Lampung coffee farmers with 160 respondents. This research was conducted in West Lampung and Tanggamus is the center of coffee production in Indonesia. The type of data were primary and secondary data. The data analysis method were the method of qualitative and quantitative analysis. The results showed that the dominant character of coffee farmer entrepreneurship is Commitment, Seeking feedback, Integrity and realiability, and Tolerance for failure. Innovation is considered to provide convenience, more suitable, easy to practice, and easily monitored for its development and is not difficult to imitate. Coffee farmers are open to innovation and benefit from the innovation. Coffee farmers use their innovation channels effectively. The entrepreneurial character of farmers correlates with innovation channel variables and stages of innovation adoption. Independent personality and Managerial Skill for Entrepreneurs (MSE) characters correlate with three innovation channel variables and Creativity and innovativeness (CAI) character correlates with all stages of innovation adoption variables.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the sustainability of salt farming based on index assessment using the Rap-Salt method by Multidimensional Scaling (MDS). This research was conducted in three national central salt production in Madura Island, namely Sumenep, Pamekasan and Sampang districts. The data used were primary and secondary data. The primary data was obtained from direct interviews with farmers and some salt experts. The secondary data was obtained from the Statistics Indonesia, the Fisheries and Marine Affairs Office, the Trade Office, and literature that supported this research. The results of the Rap-Salt ordination technique of the MDS method indicate that the sustainability index value in salt farming in three regions on Madura Island ranges from 52,23-53,31. The three regions on Madura Island, respectively, are Pamekasan, Sumenep, and Sampang districts belong to sufficient sustainability category. The analysis of the sustainability of the salt farming in each dimension in five dimensions (ecology, economy, social culture, technology, and institutions) shows that Sumenep Regency has a relatively large index value in several dimensions compared to the other two districts, respectively economy (97,92), culture social (71,70), technology (73,83), and institutional (38,73).

Abstract

Beef cattle breeding is one of the most important production factors and the quality of beef cattle breeds can affect the level of beef production. The increase in demand for beef is not followed by an increase in population and national beef productivity. The government is trying to fulfil the needs of domestic cattle breeds by establishing a Technical Implementation Unit for beef cattle breeding in various regions, one of which is Padang Mengatas BPTU-HPT. The most widely bred cattle breeders are local cattle, called pesisir’s cattle. Pesisir’s cattle are local cattle that have the potential to be developed because have several advantages over other local cattle. Therefore, in this study, it is needed to analyze the sustainability of pesisir’s cattle breeds in BPTU-HPT Padang Mengatas because pesisir’s cattle an important role as a meat supplier in West Sumatra whose population has decreased, it is necessary to see how sustainable the pesisir’s cattle are so that the supply of meat in West Sumatra is available sustainably with the germplasm of locally owned cattle. Data were processed using the Rap-Local Beef Cattle Breeding ordination technique through the Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) method for sustainability analysis. Our results indicated the sustainability status of pesisir’s cattle breeding in multidimensional is quite sustainable because the index value is at an interval of 50,01 until 75,00 with a value of 72,89 in the economic dimension 67,96 in the ecological dimension 67,78 in the social dimension and 56,04 in the technological dimension.

Abstract

Secara umum di Indonesia produksi petani dalam negeri sudah memenuhi kebutuhan akan bawang merah. Pembangunan pertanian bertujuan untuk meningkatkan produksi dan pendapatan petani khususnya di Sulawesi Tengah. Salah satu komoditas andalan yang diharapkan dapat meningkatkan pendapatan petani adalah komoditas bawang merah lokal Palu. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memetakan model bisnis terkini dari UD. HJ. MBOK SRI, menganalisis kondisi internal dan eksternal usaha serta merumuskan rancangan perbaikan model bisnisnya. Metode yang digunakan adalah Business Model Canvas (BMC), SWOT dan Blue Ocean Strategy (BOS). Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan pemetaan model bisnis terkini berdasarkan 9 elemen yang ada pada BMC kemudian akan dilanjutkan dengan analisis SWOT pada setiap elemen BMC dan menentukan strategi dari isu strategis yang diangkat untuk mengatasi masalah yang ada pada UD. HJ. MBOK SRI. Selanjutnya akan dikombinasikan kedalam model bisnis perbaikan UD. HJ. MBOK SRI yang baru dengan menggunakan perspektif Blue ocean Strategy (BOS). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa alternatif strategi yang dapat diupayakan dalam pengembangan UD. HJ. MBOK SRI dapat difokuskan kepada elemen customer segment, value preposition, channels, customer relationship dan Key Partnerships yaitu dengan mengoptimalkan penggunaan jejaring sosial dapat menambah segmen pelanggan yang baru serta dengan meningkatkan proposisi nilai akan berpengaruh terhadap hubungan pelanggan yang semakin baik, hubungan kemitraan juga akan terjalin dengan baik, serta aktivitas kunci akan berjalan lancar, dan sumberdaya utama juga akan semakin memadai, sehingga arus pendapatan semakin meningkat dan struktur biaya bisa dikelola dengan baik.

Abstract

Palm oil is a leading commodity of plantations that has an important role in economic activity, including in the Nunukan Regency. Palm oil marketing is carried out by farmers in the form of fresh fruit bunches, there were several marketing channels that farmers use in the sell of fresh fruit bunches such as assemblers wholesalers, and cooperatives. The selection of marketing channels is the most complex decision faced by farmers. The purpose of this study is analyzing the factors influencing the choice decisions of marketing channels smallholders farmers in the Nunukan Regency. The selection of research places was conducted purposively and the determination of respondents using purposive and snowball sampling methods. The number of samples in this study is 40 farmers. This study used primary data obtained through interviews while secondary data obtained from related agencies. The research method is carried out descriptively to describe the marketing channels that are formed as well as multinomial logistic regression analysis to see the factors that have an influence on the selection of channels to be used in marketing. The results showed that farmers sell fresh fruit bunches through three marketing channels namely, assembler (76,22 percent), wholesalers (10,91 percent), and cooperatives (14,85 percent). Based on a statistical analysis of multinomial logistic regression showed that the age of farmers, farming experience, the price of fresh fruit bunches, and cash payment method have a significant influence on the selection of marketing channels used in the sale of fresh fruit bunches.
