Abstract

Research by several researchers on Biology Education Research (BER) showed that science process skills (SPS) were still a little bit researched. The purposes of this research are to reveal the followings: (1) the potential of inquiry-based student books integrated with local resources to improve students' science process skills; and (2) the differences in boys and girls science process skills. An experiment using the factorial design (2 X 2) was done on 52 randomly-selected senior high school students. Data collection was used essay test, then analyzed using ANOVA. This research revealed that students' SPS experienced an improvement when they studied in an inquiry class supported by a student book integrated with local resources. There is no distinction in the science process skills of boys and girls students. Boys and girls have the same opportunity to develop their SPS.

Abstract

The learning process in high schools in West Papua tends to focus on students’ cognitive enhancement and ignore the aspect skill. School is the frontline to develop students’ skills. Metacognitive and process skills are the two skills needed by the students, and both should be trained and developed. These two skills help students to implement an investigation process in which the investigation process can be well utilized using inquiry-based learning. This study aims to find out the differences in metacognitive and process skills between students treated with inquiry-based learning and those who are taught using conventional learning. This experimental study was carried out at Grade X of senior high school students of SMA Negeri 1 Manokwari. The result reveals a significant metacognitive skill of 0.000 < α 0.05, and science process skill of 0.001 < α 0.05 of students who were taught using the inquiry-based learning more than those who were taught using the conventional learning. It can be concluded that there is a significant improvement in students’ metacognitive and process skills for those who are taught using inquiry-based learning compared to those who are taught using conventional learning. Therefore, inquiry-based learning has the potential to appropriately train students’ metacognitive and science process skill.

Abstract

Background: Since COVID-19 learning has been limited and shifted to online learning. Teacher creativity in learning is needed to strengthen student learning outcomes. This study aims to investigate the effect of using comics on student learning outcomes on the material of the human digestive system. Methods: A quasi-experimental research was used on forty-two junior high school students who were randomly selected. Multiple choice tests are used to obtain student learning outcomes. Free sample t-test was used to compare student learning outcomes in comic and non-comic classes. Results: The findings revealed that the average student learning outcomes were better when they were taught using comics than non-comics (p = 0.000 < 0.05). Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that learning with the application of comic media in science subjects on the human digestive system material has an influence on learning outcomes, with the difference in student learning outcomes in the experimental class being higher than in the control class. Abstract

The research aims to examine the effect of treatment with the application of problem-based learning (PBL) on learning outcomes of student. The topic of teaching biology in this research is invertebrate material. During the conduct of this research, a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group program was done. A total of 45 students who were divided into two classes (control = 20 students, experiment = 25 students) were taken randomly from a total of eight classes. The instrument for measuring student learning outcomes is seven items and has been validated by experts and empirically. The t test was used to compare data. The results of the research show that there is no difference in learning outcomes in the two classes (experimental and control) with sig. 0.825. This research concludes that problem-based learning has no impact on student learning outcomes on invertebrate material. The future research recommendation is to provide innovation in problem-based learning to increase its effectiveness on student performance.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the validity and student responses to the supplement book developed in the animal diversity course based on the identification of fish species caught by fishermen in Warido Amberimasi Village, Biak Numfor Regency. This development research refers to the ADDIE development model; this study is limited to ADD stage. Research subjects include 4th-semester biology education students at the University of Papua. The object of research is a complementary book. The instruments used to assess the validity and practicality of teaching materials include a validity assessment sheet by expert validator one and a validity assessment sheet by expert validator two. Based on the validity of the supplement book with validity criteria with a percentage value of 81.82% (very valid) and the results of student responses to supplement books with an average response value of 86.80% included in the very good category, the supplement book developed can be used as a reference in the student learning process Biology education for 4th-semester students at the University of Papua.

Abstract

Problem-based learning (PBL) has been reported to be effective in improving student learning outcomes. Excretory system material is difficult material, and students experience problems in learning achievement. This research attempts to use PBM to enhance student learning outcomes about excretory system material. Quasi-experiment was used with a sample of 31 students (15 in the experimental class and 16 in the control class). Data on student learning outcomes were collected using tests. Non-parametric data analysis has been used to calculate learning outcomes data. The results of the research showed that there was no difference in learning outcomes between PBM and conventional classes (p > 0.05). This research concludes that student learning outcomes on excretory system material cannot be optimized by using PBM. It is necessary to optimize PBM implementation in biology classes, such as guidance to students and the use of problems in learning.

Abstract

Lesson study has been carried out on V semester students in microbiology courses in the Biology Education and Teaching and Education Faculty Study Program, University of Papua, in the odd semester of the 2017/2018 academic year. The lesson activity of this study aims to improve the process and quality of biology learning. The activities carried out were the activities of the lesson team of biological studies consisting of model lecturers and observers. Lesson Study activities are carried out as many as four open classes, each open class consists of four stages of activity, namely: plan, implementation, observation and reflection or see. Each stage of producing planning (Chapter Design, Lesson Design, RPS and assessment instruments). The learning process is carried out through the application of the Two Stay Two Stray type (TSTS) cooperative learning model. Data obtained through observations by observers. The results obtained in the open class activities show that: (1) increasing student activity, creativity and independence, (2) students' understanding of concepts that are considered difficult to improve, and (3) the quality of microbiology learning increases (4) Learning cooperative type TSTS through lesson study activities (LS) can enhance collaboration and discussion between members of the lesson study team in planning and implementing learning, as well as reflection on learning activities (5) Can improve lecturer professionalism because initially lecturer-centered learning turns into learning centered on college student
