Kata kunci: Ankle brachial index, gula darah, relaksasi otot progresif.ABSTRACTDiabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease characterized by hyperglycemia which normally leads to complications. One of which is peripheral artery disease (PAD). PAD decreases blood flow, particularly in extremities which is indicated by low ankle brachial index (ABI). PAD is a factor causing amputation in patients with DM. Furthermore, progressive muscle relaxation is a training which may increase blood flow. This study aimed to investigate the effect of progressive muscle relaxation training on blood sugar level and ABI value in patients with type 2 DM. Quasi experimental design using one group pre-post test was employed in this study. By using purposive sampling technique, 30 participants were selected as samples in the present study. Progressive muscle relaxation training was carried out 3 times a day for one week. The data was analysed by performing t-test analysis. The result showed that there was a significant difference of blood sugar level, before and after the intervension carried out (p value=0.001). However, there was no significant difference of ABI value, before and after the intervention (p value=0.997). It may indicate that progressive muscle relaxation training is effective to reduce blood sugar level, yet, not effective to increase ABI value. Based on this result, it is expected that patients with type 2 DM can carry out progressive muscle relaxation regularly to help control their blood sugar level.
