Abstract

Abstract. Mathematical reasoning ability is the ability to think through math problems logically in order to get a conclusion or a solution. Mathematical communication ability is the ability to present mathematical ideas through notations, symbols, or images. This research aimed to describe student’s mathematical reasoning and communication ability in solving math problems. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative research with 9 students of class VII-A SMPN 2 Jember as the subjects who have categorized according to the strudent’s ability of mathematics (high, moderate, and low). Methods of data collection in this research are test method and interviews method. Based on the results of the mathematical reasoning and communication ability’s test reinforced by interviews, the ability of student’s mathematical reasoning and communication to solve math problems are varied. For the mathematical reasoning ability, from 3 students that have a high mathematical ability, 2 strudents have a very good mathematical reasoning ability and 1 student has an enough mathematical reasoning ability. From 3 students that have a moderate mathematical ability, 2 strudents have a good mathematical reasoning ability and 1 student has an enough mathematical reasoning ability. From 3 students that have a low mathematical ability, 3 students have less mathematical reasoning ability. For the mathematical communication ability, from 3 students that have a high mathematical ability, 2 strudents have a very good mathematical communication ability and 1 student has an enough mathematical communication ability. From 3 students that have a moderate mathematical ability, 1 strudents has a very good mathematical communication ability and 2 student have a good mathematical communication ability. From 3 students that have a low mathematical ability, 1 student has an enough mathematical communication ability and 2 students have less mathematical communication ability. It can be concluded that the higher the student’s mathematical ability, the higher the student’s reasoning and communication ability in solving math problem. Keywords: Mathematical Reasoning Ability, Mathematical Communication Ability, Mathematic’s Problem Solving.

Abstract

Abstract. This research describes the process and the development result development of math literacy based on Madura ethnic culture for SMP / MTs students. This research is a development research that refers to the steps of Plomp model development. In this research, it was produced 1 package of test item consisting of 5 theme questions amounted to 8 questions. The package of test item developed is related to the use of mathematics in social life, especially in Maduran ethnic culture. Before this package of test item was tested, firstly, an assessment by 2 validators is done. On the assessment result of these experts, it was obtained the coefficient of validity of 2.61 with a high validity interpretation. In addition to the packages of test item validated by the validator, the package of test item is also given to 6 students of 8th grade students of MTs Nurul Islam Jember to conduct legibility test. The next stage was testing the package of test in the field. The result of this try out from field was analyzed. The analysis conducted is the validity test for each test item, reliability test, test item differentiation power assessment, test item difficulty level assessment and the level of students' mathematical literacy ability. The results of validity test item on the package of math literacy test item based on Madura ethnic culture obtained all the questions developed were valid. In the package of math literacy test item based on Madura ethnic culture showed high reliability with a coefficient of 0.76. The result of differentiation power test obtained two test items with a category of good, two questions with a category of enough and four problems with a category of bad. On the assessment of difficulty level, it was obtained five questions with a category of difficult, two problems with a category of medium and one problem with a category of easy. The students' math literacy ability level indicated that students were at level 1, level 2, and level 3. Based on the result of the analysis conducted, it can be concluded that the quality of the developed problem package is good. Key Words: Mathematical literacy test items, Madura ethnic culture

Abstract

Abstract: The ability of mathematical representation is very important to solve mathematical problems, because every solution must use mathematical representation. This research was conducted at Thailand's Streesmutprakan School because according to the results of the 2015 PISA test, mathematical representation skills also affected the execution of the PISA test. The PISA test results in 2015 showed that the Mathematics ability of Thai students was ranked 54th out of 70 countries with an average score of 415. While the average score for Mathematics from all countries taking the PISA test was 490. The results showed that Thailand was still in in a position below the average. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative, by giving PISA questions about shape and space content. The results of this study indicate that students with high abilities are superior in visual mathematical representation. This can be seen from the number of cube nets that can be drawn with different models. The indicator of mathematical expression is only one of six students who can meet the indicator and answer correctly. For indicators of the ability to represent in words or written texts, students with high abilities are also more prominent because they have a reason for each answer, whereas for students with medium and low abilities only guess even silence during interviews. Abstract

Ethnomathematics exploration at the Jami 'Al-Baitul Amien Jember MosqueAbstractThe purpose of this research is to explore ethnomathematics at the Jami 'Al-Baitul Amien Jember Mosque building which is then used as material to design mathematics test packages for students. This research was a qualitative study with an ethnographic approach. The data collection methods used were observations and interviews. The research subjects were three observers and two resource persons, namely the management of the Jami 'Al-Baitul Amien Jember Mosque Foundation. One person is the chairman of the committee who understands the history of the Jami 'Al-Baitul Amien Mosque and one person is the only administrator who followed the construction period so that he understands the structure of the mosque building. The results show that the parts of the Jami 'Al-Baitul Amien Jember Mosque have mathematical concepts. The building parts meant are the dome of the mosque, the pillars of the mosque, the second floor, the shower wall of the Wudlu Room, and the mosque tower. Mathematical concepts that emerge are 2D shapes, 3D shapes, congruence, and reflection.
