Abstract

Abstract

The development of the internet in this era of globalization has increased fast. The need for internet becomes unlimited. Utility functions as one of measurements in internet usage, were usually associated with a level of satisfaction of users for the use of information services used. There are three internet pricing schemes used, that are flat fee, usage based and two-part tariff schemes by using one of the utility function which is Bandwidth Diminished with Increasing Bandwidth with monitoring cost and marginal cost. Internet pricing scheme will be solved by LINGO 13.0 in form of non-linear optimization problems to get optimal solution. The optimal solution is obtained using the either usage-based pricing scheme model or two-part tariff pricing scheme model for each services offered, if the comparison is with flat-fee pricing scheme. It is the best way for provider to offer network based on usage based scheme. The results show that by applying two part tariff scheme, the providers can maximize its revenue either for homogeneous or heterogeneous consumers.

Abstract

The process of thinking in formulating a mathematical model requires cognitive processes. In learning mathematics, one of the factors that influence mathematics ability is gender differences.  This research explores and provides an overview of the cognitive processes, especially using the representational form in mathematical modeling regarding gender differences. The type of research used is descriptive exploratory with a qualitative approach. The research subjects were 36 pre-service teachers in the mathematics education study program, consists of 18 males and 18 females. The instruments were a written test and an interview guide sheet. The result shows that males get higher percentages than females to answer the representational problem correctly. In conclusion, both males and females solve the graph problem using representative form through three components of the cognitive process.  The first and second component, namely knowing and applying, shows the same behavior: retrieving the information from the mathematical problem and displaying the information into the graph. For the third component, reasoning also offers the same behavior because the truth of the graph that justifies refers to the mathematical properties. The study implies that it might be the same treatment for males and females to improve representational form regarding the components of cognitive process, namely, knowing, applying, and reasoning.

Abstract

Many researchers stated that most students struggle to solve higher mathematical problems, including open-ended problems. One of many solutions is to apply a realistic context close to students. Hence, this research aimed to analyze students’ abilities in solving an open-ended mathematical problem using the Songket context, particularly the Kembang Tengah motif. The subjects were 24 seventh graders. The instruments for this descriptive research were an open-ended problem and an interview sheet. The results show that in solving the open-ended problem, 88.33% of students understood the problem, 59.72% were able to construct, and 72.22% applied the plan, while 52.78% wrote the conclusion. No students evaluated their solution to the problem. In implementing open-ended problems in the traditional context, students have different solutions based on their various experiences with the context, problem-solving schema, and mean-putting on the problem. They also applied multiple problem-solving strategies in working the problem. The similarity was the use of assumptions in solving the problem. However, some assumptions were inconsistent, neither their prior work nor other mathematical concepts. Therefore, teachers and researchers need to emphasize students’ written self-evaluation to check and improve their solutions. Another suggestion is to see the metacognitive process in solving the open-ended mathematical problem using a specific tradition. Furthermore, teachers should engage more in using open-ended problems and scaffold students when facing obstacles in solving them.
