Abstract

Soybean is a strategic commodity which is used as a raw material for food processing and consumed by most of Indonesian people. National demand cannot be covered by local production, due to imported one. This research indicated that soybean harvested area was influenced by local soybean real price, maize real price and last year harvested area. Soybean productivity was influenced by rainfall, maize real price and last year productivity. Local soybean price was influenced by soybean real price at producer level, imported soybean real price, quantity of imported soybean, productivity and last year soybean real price. Soybean real price at producer level was influenced by soybean production, imported soybean quantity, soybean consumption, BULOG monopoly and last year real price at producer level. Soybean import quantity was influenced by production and consumption. Imported soybean price was influenced by international price, exchange rates, import tariff, and last year import price. Combination policy of increase the soybean price and import tariff 20% would stimulate the producer to increase harvested area and production. Strategy to increase competitiveness and national soybean production are through productivity improvement and extended planting area programs. The priority to increase the production is to improve productivity and apply suitable technology. Extension of planting area to better region is conducted to increase cropping index. To anticipate trading liberalization negative effect to farmers’ welfare, protection policy by the government is still needed to control international price fluctuation and to strengthen local soybean competitiveness. Abstract

Torbangun soup is made by traditionally recipe as Batak cuisine. A packaging technique has applied by canned the soup to produce Torbangun soup for commercially market. An antioxidant is added to prevent rancidity and to prolong shelf life of canned soup. Regarding to quality analysis, the shelf life of canned Torbangun soup is 14 days in room temperature. The effort has been done by storage the product in cool temperature (5 - 8°C and 10 - 12°C) and resulted in longer shelf life until 22 days. In spite of antioxidant adding, pasteurization at temperature of 75°C for 15 minutes prior canned can result on longer shelf life of the soup. However, can is metal and it might some hazard substance migrate into product. The study showed that the amount of the total residue migrate from can into soup is lower than 10 mg/dm2 allowing by the Directive 90/128/EEC for aqueous food simulant. A total migration test using 95% alcohol gave a value of 37.4435 mg/dm2, means higher than that EU standard as 10 mg/dm2. Keyword: Torbangun leaf soup, total migration, canning method

Abstract

Sodium lignosulphonate is a product of isolated lignin sulphonation process using NaHSO3 as sulphonation agent. This research was proposed to produce sodium lignosulphonate , to identify and to charactirize the product as dispersant agent. The lignin sulphonation process was conducted by ratio of reactant variable (NaHSO3 and lignin) 60.32%, pH 6.03 and temperature at 90.28 OC on batch reactor. The identification was carried out by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and by Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrophotometer (LCMS). Identification using FTIR and LCMS spectrophotometer indicated that SLS produced from this study has similar characteristic with SLS standard from Aldrich (SLS-Aldrich). Performance test of SLS as dispersant materials for gypsum paste pointed out that this SLS has lower performance than SLS-Aldrich. This was caused by the purity of SLS standard, 96%. Nevertheless SLS still fulfilled the characteristic as dispersant materials for gypsum paste because it has purity of more than 80%. Keywords: lignin, sulphonation, sodium lignosulphonate, dispersant

Abstract

Three isolates name as Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA), Pseudomonas pseudomallei (PP) and Enterobacter agglomerans (EA) are petroleum hydrocarbon degrader bacteria. They were grown in mineral medium and 10% diesel oil as carbon source. The diesel oil biodegradation by PAEA and PPEA are better than single or other mixed cultures. The diesel oil compounds are oxidized to intermediate product and detected as fatty acids ranged of nC18 to nC8, organic acids, and then it was mineralized. The mineralized products measured as methane, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. This result showed that during hydrocarbon biodegradation of aliphatic compounds by those isolates through fatty acids formation, simple organic acids, and simple volatile organic carbon. The mineralized product of methane, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide were emitted to the environment. Keywords: Biodegradation, diesel oil, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, minerallized

Abstract

This research studied the moisture sorption behavior of jatropha seeds by developing a model that correlates the equilibrium moisture (EMC) and Free Fatty Acids (FFA) contents as a function of water activity and EMC, respectively. Two sets of sorption-isotherm experiments were performed to describe the relationship of EMC and FFA contents with water activity, both for fresh and dried seeds of Banten and Lampung varieties. The seeds are conditioned in a series of vessel with saturated salts at certain water activity. The EMC were increased following an increase in water activity in either desorption or adsorption. The hysteresis effect is more pronounced at Banten variety than Lampung one. The FFA content of fresh seeds was increased with an increase in water activity, while the FFA content of dried seeds is relatively constant. The moisture sorption behavior of jatropha seeds reveals that like most product, it exhibits the sigmoid pattern. The BET, GAB, Harkins-Jura, Halsey and Oswin models are recommended to be adequate in predicting the amount of moisture adsorbed or desorbed at known humidity. The relationship between EMC and FFA contents shows that the polynomial equation is the best for fresh seeds, and constant equation for dried seeds.Keyword: moisture sorption; jatropha seeds; water activity; equilibrium moisture content;

Abstract

 The removal characteristics of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) by organic (compost) and inorganic (granular activated carbon) carriers were studied at a laboratory scale. The compost, activated carbon and mix of them with the ratio of 1:1 were evaluated as packing materials of packed tower deodorization apparatus (biofilter) from the view points of biological removal characteristics of H2S and some physical properties. The removal rate of H2S by compost, activated carbon and mix of them (1:1) in non-biological treatment were 0.22, 0.37, and 0.88 g-S.kg-dr-material-1 respectively. However, the maximum removal rates of H2S by biological treatment were 11.85, 14.66, and 20.49 g-S. kg dry-material-1 respectively. The removal rate of H2S from all packing materials after inoculated with mixed culture of Thiobacillus sp. was increased due to biological oxidation by Thiobacillus sp. The mixed of compost and activated carbon showed the best result to remove H2S from contaminated air. Keywords : Biofilter, H2S, Thiobacillus sp., compost, activated carbon.
