Abstract

Background. Concentration has an important role that influences the success of the learning process. The higher the concentration of students in learning, the more effective learning and teaching processes are carried out. One of the benefits of exercise is the improvement of concentration. Lack of time and motivation to do physical exercise are some reasons why people do less exercise. Circuit Training is an exercise that does not require a lot of time and is becoming a trend now.Objective: To find out the effect of the Circuit Training on the concentration level of students at Medical Faculty of Diponegoro University.Method. This research was a quasi-experimental study with pre and post-test design, where research subjects were divided into two groups, there are the control group and the treatment group. The research subjects were 28 male students at Medical Faculty of Diponegoro University. The treatment group had given Circuit Training for 6 weeks. In one week there were 3 meetings where each training session was done in 3 circuits/cycle and each circuit consisted of 8 movements. The indicator assessed in this study was the level of concentration measured using the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST) before and after Circuit Training for 6 weeks. The results were analyzed using SPSS.Results. The score of concentration in the treatment group increased with a pre-test score  64,93 ± 6,38 and post-test score 76,29 ± 5,74. Significant results (p = 0.001) were obtained in the pre and post-test treatment groups.Conclusion. Circuit training for 6 weeks can increase the concentration score of students at Medical Faculty of Diponegoro University.

Abstract

Background: Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is a 3-dimensional deformity that involves not only curve in the coronal and sagittal planes but also rotation of vertebrae based on pedicle rotation. The Cobb’s angle is  the gold standard for measuring the lateral curve that could show severity of the spine deformity. The Cobb’s method only evaluate the lateral curve,and the method to determine the pedicle rotation can be used the Nash and Moe’s method.The higher pedicle rotation grade had higher Cobb’s angle. Surgical treatment for scoliosis is indicated for the curve exceeding 40o. Posterior spinal fusion is the most commonly used technique in scoliosis surgery.Objective: To identify the correlation between the Cobb’s Angle and pedicle rotation in AIS after surgical treatment.Methods: The research design used in this study was Cross Sectional. The sample size of this study were 22 subjects using purposive sampling, the independent variable of this study was Cobb’s angle while the dependent variable was pedicle rotation. Spearman’s rank correlation was used to analyze the correlation between variable.Results: The spearman’s rank correlation revealed a significant correlation between the Cobb’s Angle and pedicle rotation in AIS after surgical treatment with the  p 0,005 and r 0,462.Conclusion: This study demonstrates there is a significant correlation between Cobb’s angle and pedicle rotation in AIS after surgical treatment with medium strength.

Abstract

Background: Research conducted at the Central General Hospital (RSUP) Dr. Kariadi Semarang in 2013 stated that out of 1,719 deliveries, 82 (5%) were preterm labor cases. Although there are many predictors for predicting imminent preterm labour, the complete prediction and prevention have not been established. Prevention of preterm labor through screening is the key to antenatal care. Good early prediction on a premature labor will provide adequate antenatal surveillance and special interventions.Objective: to analyze the relationship between cervical length, bacterial vaginosis, urinary tract infections, and premature rupture of membranes with the incidence of preterm labor.Methods: It is an observational analytic study in the form of the design of cross sectional with subject of pregnant women who experienced imminent preterm labour at gestational age 28-34 weeks and were treated at the ward of Obstetrics Gynecology Hospital Dr. Kariadi Semarang and network hospital during the study period (n=112). Subjects were assessed for the clinical risk (BV, premature rupture of the membrane, urinary tract infection) and sonography (cervical length). Statistical analysis was performed with paired t-test for normally distributed data and Mann Whitney if otherwise. Analysis of the relationship between variables and the incidence of preterm labor was carried out by the X 2 testResults: From 112 subjects, it was found that the Prevalence Ratio (PR) for cervical length, bacterial vaginosis, urinary tract infections and premature rupture of membranes to the incidence of imminent preterm labor was 2.2;2.32;1.99 and 2.36 respectively. From the multivariate analysis, it was found that bacterial vaginosis and premature rupture of membranes were the most influencing factors for the incidence of imminent premature labor with Odd Ratios of 6.497 and 21.362, respectively.Conclusion: There is a relationship between cervical length (≤25 mm ), bacterial vaginosis, urinary tract infections and premature rupture of membranes in the incidence of preterm labor.

Abstract

Background: Glaucoma is a group of diseases consisting of optic neuropathy characterized by damage to the retinal nerve fibers and narrowing of the visual field accompanied by increased intraocular pressure as a risk factor. Vision loss in glaucoma patients is considered as a separate stressor. Besides that, decrease visual function can also cause a person to lose his job and loss of social functions. This can trigger anxiety to depression.Objective: To analyze the correlations between the severity of disease with anxiety levels in glaucoma patients.Methods: This was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. Subjects were taken by consecutive sampling with inclution criterias were patients with moderate or severe glaucoma, able to follow the interview process and 30-80 years old. The exclusion criteria of this study were patients who was taking anti-anxiety, antidepressant, or antipsychotic drugs and having other serious / chronic disease such as heart disease, diabetes, or hypertension. Anxiety level was assessed based on the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale (TMAS) questionnaire. Analysis of the data using the Spearman Correlation test.Results: Sixty five glaucoma patients who underwent treatment in out patients department dr. Kariadi hospital were involved in this study.  A significant correlation was obtained between the severity of glaucoma and the level of anxiety (p = 0.004). Strong statistical correlation between variables included in the weak category (0.357). The highest anxiety level in glaucoma patients was moderate anxiety level (64.6%), followed by mild anxiety level (23.1%) and severe anxiety level (12.3%).Conclusion: There were significant correlation between the severity of the disease and the level of anxiety in glaucoma patients.

Abstract

Background: Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is a state of systemic inflammatory activation by various causes. SIRS have a high mortality rate. Prolactin is known to regulate cellular function of immune system.  Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is simple, cost effective and easy parameter that currently used as inflammation marker.Objective: The aims of this study is to determine the correlation between prolactin serum with NLR in SIRS patients.Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted on 50 clinically SIRS patients. Prolactin serum was measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and NLR was calculated manually from absolute neutrophil and lymphocyte count measured by automatic hematology analyzer. Non-parametric Spearman test was used to analyze the correlation between prolactin with NLR.Results: Median value of serum prolactin level was 11.32 ng/mL (2.76-194.81), whereas the mean value NLR was 16.36 ± 11.58. The correlation between prolactin levels with NLR was r = 0.345, p = 0.014.Conclusion: There is a weak positive significant correlation between prolactin with neutrophil lymphocyte ratio in SIRS

Abstract

Background: Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is sleeping-disorder that’s characterized by recurrent episodes of upper airway obstruction during sleep. Fourteen percent of world populations suffer from OSAS. OSA patients are 7.5 to 20 times more likely to have difficulties with concentration, learning new tasks, and execution of monotonous tasks.Objective: The primary objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) and concentration level in young adultsMethods: This is an analytic observational study with cross-sectional design. Sampling was carried out with total sampling. Samples that qualified the inclusion and exclusion criteria were assessed by OSAS using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) questionnaire and Digit Symbol Substitution Test was used to assess the concentration level. The data were analyzed, using the chi-square test and the prevalence (PR) testResults: The Chi-square test showed that there was a significant relationship between OSAS and concentration level (p=0.033). The Prevalence Ratio test found that OSAS decreased concentration level by 1.55 compared to not OSASConclusion: There was a significant relationship between OSAS and concentration level in young adults. OSAS patients are 1.55 more likely to have a decrease concentration level when compared with healthy individuals

Abstract

Background: Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is a breathing disorder during sleep that can cause stopping breathing and trigger dangerous diseases. The main symptoms that can occur in OSAS patients are loud snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness so it can disrupt the quality of life and performance. Allergic rhinitis (AR) is one of the risk factors for OSAS, after age, obesity, sex, neck circumference, and anatomic abnormalities of the airway. Allergic rhinitis can disrupt the quality of sleep patients. Allergic rhinitis patient has a risk of OSAS due to obstruction of the upper airways so airflow to the lungs is obstructed.Objective: To analyze the relationship of allergic rhinitis with the incidence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) in young adults.Methods: This study is an observational study with a cross-sectional design. Samples were obtained with a probability sampling method by consecutive sampling. The subject of this study were students of the Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University, aged 18-23 years. This study consisted of interviews, BMI examination, neck circumference examination, nose, and throat examination, fill the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) questionnaire to assess OSAS and the Score For Allergic Rhinitis (SFAR) questionnaire to assess allergic rhinitis. Statistical tests use chi-square, fisher's exact test, and logistic regression.Results: The incidence of allergic rhinitis with OSAS in young adults occurred as much as 79,7%. Bivariate analyze showed allergic rhinitis associated significantly with the incidence of OSAS in young adults (p=0,000; PR=12,3). The most common group of allergic rhinitis symptoms in allergic rhinitis patients with OSAS is the group of symptoms of sneezing, rhinorrhea, and nasal congestion.Conclusion: Allergic rhinitis patients risk 12,3 times more likely to suffer from OSAS than non-allergic rhinitis in young adults.

Abstract

Background: Peripheral neuropathy can be caused by diabetes mellitus, nutritional deficiencies, entrapment or Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), and idiopathic.Objective: To determine the therapeutic efficacy of Vitamin B1, B6, and B12 forte in relieving symptoms of peripheral neuropathy.Methods: This was pre- and post-experimental study involving patients with moderate peripheral neuropathy (Toronto Clinical Neuropathy Score [TCNS] ≥6 and Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument [MNSI] ≥7) taken from outpatient neurological clinic of Dr. Kariadi Hospital, Semarang. The patient was prescribed Vit B1 100 mg, B6 100 mg, and B12 5000 mcg once daily for 2 months. Evaluation of the numerical pain rating scale in the form of VAS and Total Symptom Score (TSS) was conducted at the first and second month. The VAS score difference test was conducted with the Wilcoxon test and TSS with the Post Hoc test and considered significant if p <0.05.Results: There were 30 patients aged 18 - 65 years, consisted of 70% female and 30% male. The etiology of peripheral neuropathy were idiopathic (40%), CTS (26.7%), DM (23.3%), and HNP (10%). There were significant differences of the VAS scale  and TSS at every evaluations.Conclusion: Administration of VitB1, B6, and B12 forte relieved symptoms of moderate peripheral neuropathy with improvement of VAS and TSS scores

Abstract

Background: Thyroid malignancy is one of the most common malignancies in women of reproductive age. One of the normal physiological change in pregnancy is an increase in total maternal thyroid levels. According to 2015 DATIN information, the prevalence of hypothyroidism in women of reproductive age was 2.2%. Method of delivery in patients with thyroid disorders are mostly by cesarean section due to complications of the mother and/or fetus. Fetal outcome usually associated with low birth weight and poor APGAR Score.Objective : Reporting a case of pregnancy with hypothyroidism secondary to thyroid carcinoma treatmentCase: A 37-year-old woman Gravida 3 Parity 2 Abortion 0 with 18 weeks pregnancy after thyroid ablation treatment with a history of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma – Follicular Variant, following a complete thyroidectomy in August 2016. The patient was given 6-dose ablation therapy, the last therapy was performed in April 2019. On clinical examination, the patient have no sign and symptoms suggesting hypothyroidism. On laboratory examination, the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level was increased. Levothyroxine dosage was adjusted until the patient in euthyroid status in the early 3rd trimester of pregnancy until the delivery period. The fetal examination suggests that the Bio-Physical Profile was normal according to gestational age. The patient underwent vaginal delivery following 38 weeks of gestation with good maternal outcomes and low birth weight neonatal outcomes, no thyroid nodules, and slightly increased thyroid function.Conclusion : Management of counselling about preconception, contraception, and initial screening of patients with a history of thyroid carcinoma are the initial steps to help a better outcome in pregnancies with thyroid disorders.

Abstract

Background : The use of smartphones and other digital devices such as laptops and tablets is familiar in Indonesian society. Excessive uses of the devices are associated with dry eye syndrome and tear film dysfunction. The intensity of blue light when penetrating the eye is believed to affect tear film stability. Thus it will encourage tear evaporation which proved by Schirmer test.Objective : To find out the difference of Schirmer test results before and after using a smartphone with  various screen brightness levels.Methods : This study used pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study. The research subjects were students of the Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University (n = 30) who were selected by purposive sampling. In this study, the research subjects used smartphones for an hour with a predetermined screen brightness level, with the same room lighting. Before and after treatment the subject was measured the quantity of tears using the Schirmer test. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test, Mann Whitney U test, and Kruskal Wallis test.Results : The average pretest result on low brightness was 25,60 ± 9,44 and the post-test result was 17,60 ± 8,45. The pre-test result on medium brightness was 27,90 ± 9,46 and the post-test result was 24,80 ± 10,46. The pre-test result on high brightness was 23,60 ± 6,80 and the post-test result was 19,10 ± 7,95. The Schirmer test results before and after using smartphones with low brightness showed a significant different (P<0.05) and there was no significant difference for the pre-post test using smartphones with medium and high brightness. Comparison of Schirmer test results on low, medium and high screen brightness did not show a significant difference.Conclusion : There is no significant difference between the Schirmer test results among low, medium and high screen brightness after one hour of smartphone usage.
