Abstract

This research is entitled Ethnic Chinese in the Dynamics of the Kei Islands Community. The problems that will be studied in this study are as follows: 1) How is the process of entering the Chinese community in the Kei Islands? 2) How is the interaction between the Chinese community and the local community in the Kei Islands? To get answers to these problems, the research method used is history, which consists of our stages, namely heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography, using theories and other relevant social science concepts. The objectives of this study are To explain the process of the arrival of the Chinese community in the Kei Islands, their interaction with the local community, and their role in the governmental, economic and socio-cultural aspects of the Kei Islands. Thus, it is hoped that this research can enrich the historiography of the Kei ethnic Chinese in Maluku, which is still relatively small. From this research, it is known that the Chinese people in the KeiIslands have existed for a long time and can interact with local communities well. It can be seen from the Chinese community's use of the indigenous Kei clan and the application of local culture in their lives, even though these practices go hand in hand with the original Chinese traditions. Until now, the Chinese community has played a vital role in various sectors of life in Kei, both in the economy and politics. It can be seen from the Chinese title Kei, and some politicians of Chinese descent, even the former regent of the Kei Islands, are of Chinese descent. Thus, the Chinese people in Kei considered themselves as Kei people.

Abstract

Folk dialogue conducted post-conflict serves as social capital for achieving peace in Maluku. Religious dialogue today is often carried out formally by spiritual leaders and government institutions (the elites). During the Christian-Islam conflict, it was realized that society lived in tension, with frequent massacres among people, and religion itself seemed to lose its existence. Religion was perceived as a trigger for the conflict dynamics in Maluku, involving violence between Christians and Muslims, leading to division. This disintegration within the community is evident in daily life, with the emergence of religious identity symbols, such as the terms "salam" (for Muslims) and "sarani" (for Christians), the restriction of social interactions, and the segregation of areas based on religion. Thus, analyzing folk dialogue is crucial for the central Maluku community in maintaining cultural networks (Islam-Christian relations) during and after the conflict.

Abstract

Traditional governance and its institutions in Maluku began to disappear and erode during Indonesia's New Order era when the government implemented Law No. 5 of 1979, which standardized the village governance system across the country. However, with the advent of the era of autonomy and the enactment of laws allowing each region to restore its traditional governance systems, the people and regional government of Maluku began to apply these laws. The Provincial Government of Maluku issued Regional Regulation No. 14 of 2005, allowing each regency and city to restore the traditional governance system in each village (negeri). Nevertheless, controversy has arisen over the position of Matarumah Parentah, or the right to serve as the head of the village government. Almost every negeri (village) that has returned to traditional governance faces issues regarding which matarumah (lineage house) has the right to occupy the village head or raja position. Therefore, to maintain social harmony, customs, and the historical leadership of the Negeri, the residents need to restore the government leadership to the Matarumah Parentah as the legitimate authority. Adherence to and respect for tradition are crucial in maintaining harmony and integrity among the residents. The people of Maluku must recognize the importance of traditional governance, passed down by their ancestors to the current generation, and must observe and implement it faithfully. Tradition, as a means of conflict resolution and tension control within the community, must serve as a guiding principle for the residents of the Negeri.

Abstract

This research aims to explain the responsibility of social scientists and their role in addressing issues related to the values of togetherness in cultural, ethnic, racial, and religious diversity, often referred to as multiculturalism. In Indonesia, multiculturalism is sometimes seen as a blessing but also, in narrow perspectives, as a calamity and a cause of destruction. However, multiculturalism in Indonesia as a product of local culture existed long before the formation of the Indonesian state. The data and information in this paper are derived from a desk review of various research reports, book studies, documents, and the author's own experiences conducting relevant research. The core issue discussed in this paper is how to ensure that local culture's multicultural products continue to serve as a guide for the communities that support them in Indonesia. Social scientists must be called upon by their social obligations as analysts and providers of information through their research findings and as spokespersons or prototypes of good behavior, morals, and actions within society. Furthermore, the paper highlights the role of social scientists as leaders of multiculturalism who are objective, open, and courageous in expressing truthful ideas, as truth functions not only as a way of thinking but also as a way of life. The conclusion of this paper indicates that a significant majority of social scientists in Indonesia consciously take responsibility for their academic contributions, which society can utilize, particularly in relation to multiculturalism in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper theoretically examines, using a literature review method, the importance of building the nation's collective memory of the historical phenomenon 1908, which emerged from political, social, and cultural awareness and transformed into a spirit of unity that did not discriminate against one another at that time. The current reality shows deep concern because the spirit of diversity, harmony, and cohesion, the values of the national awakening, is gradually fading. The sense of nationalism during the national movement era provides authority that the nation's history is significant and should, therefore, be manifested through history education. In essence, education aims to build awareness, sympathy, and empathy towards past struggles. History education plays a crucial role in this, so teachers must be able to design various learning models that accommodate this goal. Amidst the chaos of politics, the escalation of conflicts and violence, and the loss of national identity, social phenomena that have weakened the foundations of our diversity, unity, and cohesion as a pluralistic nation must be addressed through the educational process.

Abstract

This paper describes Masela Island through an anthropological approach, highlighting its remarkable cultural wealth. As a small island, it plays a significant role in developing strategic national issues concerning Indonesia's outermost islands. The paper examines the perspective of utilizing small islands by focusing on Masela Island, one of the small islands in the Southwest Maluku Regency, Maluku Province, through the lens of minor island anthropology. The management model of small islands is now a social reality. Masela is a small island that boasts many advantages in cultural development but still needs to be noticed due to geographical constraints. However, the potential for artistic development on Masela Island is highly promising.Masela Island is also considered a small island bordering Australia, making it vulnerable to various social upheavals that could affect the local culture in Maluku. This paper aims to reveal the potential of Masela Island as a small island in Maluku from an anthropological perspective, focusing on the cultural advantages of small islands. The method is descriptive with a qualitative approach, employing data collection techniques such as interviews, observations, and literature reviews. The findings of this paper show that Masela Island, as a small island with significant cultural potential, complements the cultural heritage of the communities on the small islands of Southwest Maluku.

Abstract

The people who inhabit the island of Buru come from various places; among them, some groupings differentiate from one another and are known as Rana people, Wakahallo people, Orangakang, Earth lale people and traders. Of the five designations, this study focuses on "Trading People". In this case, the Chinese community. They also play an essential role in various community life sectors on Buru Island. Their existence is identified through names such as "Chinese Namlea, Chinese Namrole, Chinese Waplau and Chinese Buru". The purpose of this research is to explore the history of the arrival of the Chinese community on Buru Island and to identify the dynamics of Chinese life in terms of social, economic, political, and cultural aspects of Buru Island. To achieve this goal, the historical method was used in four stages: heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The number of Chinese communities on Buru Island is large and spread over several locations in several sub-districts. They live side by side with the local population without a barrier in the form of a high wall to separate them from the surrounding community. Their livelihoods generally are trading groceries and necessities and building materials for houses. In addition, they can also take advantage of the availability of natural resources on the island of Buru, namely eucalyptus oil and make it an important trading commodity with high economic value. Even though they have adhered to Christianity and Islam, they still maintain the Chinese tradition from their ancestors. Besides the trade sector, Chinese people in Buru have played an essential role in politics.

Abstract

Countries in Maluku have a traditional government system known as customary government. The government was formed through a long process based on territorial genealogical principles so that the terms Matarumah, Petuanan, Soa, Badan Saniri Negeri and other government elements were known as part of customary institutions. So, as part of the customary government, it is a combination or union of one or several particular house or family elements. Referring to Law No. 5/1979, all Maluku villages whose status were states changed their names to desa. The uniformity of the governmental system in Indonesia has resulted in the loss of adat in Indonesian villages, including some as an element of government and an aspect of adat in Tahalupu. With the existence of the Law on regional autonomy and regional regulations of Maluku Province, which restore status villages to government institutions, research on the history of the formation of Soa and its role in the State of Tahalupu is essential to be studied scientifically so that it can be known and can be a reference and contribution to local history in Maluku.
