Abstract

The competencies of vocational high school (VHS) graduates, especially in terms of character have not met its standards. This study aims to develop a character-based assessment model for VHS in the form of a guide and procedure. Borg Gall’s (1989) model with the following stages was utilized: (1) needs analysis, (2) planning, (3) development, (4) phase I trial, (5) phase II trial, (6) evaluation of model effectiveness, and (7) final product development. This study involved some experts in the model validation. Trials were done to teachers and principals in eight VHSs in Yogyakarta Special Province, Indonesia in 2017 (first trial), and those from 42 VHSs throughout Java island, Indonesia in 2018 (second trial). Data were collected by questionnaires and interviews and analysed by quantitative and qualitative descriptive statistics. This study suggest that, overall, the model is appropriate and feasible to use, proven by (1) the assessment guide is categorized as ‘very appropriate’ (Mean 3.55; SD .52); (2) assessment procedure achieves an ‘very appropriate’ category (Mean = 3.60; SD = .51); and (3) effectiveness of the assessment model in trial 1 is in the ‘very appropriate’ category (Mean 3.43, and SD .51), and in trial 2 is in the ‘appropriate’ category (Mean 3.38, SD .53).

Abstract

Since competition activities can improve sportsmanship, moral development, motivation, and prepare students in the "real world", competition activities (sports orientation) in physical education is very necessary. A strategy that is proposed to stimulate sports orientation in physical education in this study is a Sport Education Model (SEM). The purpose of this study was to determine the differences between team sports and individual sports when using SEM, towards sports orientation in physical education for junior high school students. The research method uses true experiments with posttest-only control group design. The participants in this study were 80 grade seventh junior high school students. Using the Sport Orientation Questionnaire (SOQ), the data was analysed using independent samples t-test. The results stated that there were significant differences between the two conditions. The findings suggests that sports orientation in SEM team sports are more influenced by goal orientation is in accord with the statement that achievement in sports competition (sports orientation) depends on goal orientation, but not at SEM individual sports.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to compare the efficiency performance of high school education in Indonesiabased on its specialization groups, namely natural and social sciences. This study uses secondary data of high school published by Ministry of Education and Culture of Republic of Indonesia in 2016 which covers general description such as the numbers of schools, students, teachers, graduates, classes, et cetera. This study uses a bootstrap approach that is applied in Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method, which compares the efficiency of each Decision Making Unit (DMU). To compare its efficiency, as many as 34 provinces are used as DMUs by using six input variables, namely the number of participants of national exam, students, schools, teachers, libraries, and the number of classrooms. The output variables are the number of graduates, the average score of national exam in Indonesian, English, and mathematics. The results indicate that all provinces have very good performance in organizing high school education for both natural and social sciences where the average efficiency scores of the traditional DEA are .99 and .98 for natural and social sciences, respectively. Meanwhile, its average scores from bootstrapped DEA are .98 and .96 for natural and social sciences, respectively. The empirical results also reveal that bootstrapped DEA provides better accuracy of efficiency scores than the traditional DEA. Overall, the provinces in Indonesia have better performance in organizing natural science than social science.

Abstract

We conducted this study to evaluate the competencies of Form Six geography teachers in achieving the Malaysian Education Quality Standards. We applied a qualitative approach using the observation technique. The respondent observation consisted of three teachers who had more than 10 years of experience teaching Form Six geography and who were working in the areas of Batang Padang district, Perak and Hulu Selangor district, Malaysia. The variables we assessed were practical knowledge, subject-content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, pedagogical technology knowledge, teachers’ teaching of professional behaviours and attitudes, and values modified from the Quality Level Rubric of the Malaysian Education Quality Standards. The observation findings showed that each teacher scored different points, ranging from three to four for the assessed variables. Teachers’ pedagogical technology knowledge needs to be improved as two out of three teachers were still using Teaching Aid Materials such as mahjong paper and marker rather than using computer or other more recent technology due to the lack of infrastructure provided by their schools. In conclusion, Form Six geography teachers in this study have fulfilled the competence of the Malaysian Education Quality Standards by achieving the maximum score.

Abstract

Despite the facts that higher education institutions are the source of quality concept and theory, they have been lagging behind manufacturing or service businesses in embracing and carrying out proper quality management. Managing quality in higher education is a difficult task due to several factors such as different perspectives between stakeholders and traditional characteristics of institutions. On the other hand, accreditation, for example by the Indonesian Bureau of Higher Education Accreditation, and international accreditation bodies, such as AACSB, EQUIS, is perceived as a tool to demonstrate a certain quality threshold.  However, many studies argue that periodic quality assessments using recognized accreditation bodies do not touch inherent quality issues in education, and that they are generally used as an exercise of quality control. The objective of this study is to look beyond quality assessments using these recognized accreditation bodies and examine dimensions of quality from university's stakeholder’s point of view, especially the stakeholder that represents the demand side. Factor analysis is conducted, and the number of factors proposed by the results are identified. There are seven quality dimensions that have impacts on the quality management system in higher education. Three dimensions are new findings, i.e., the importance of providing health and insurance, the importance of good ambiance of campus environment, and stakeholder’s explicit ability to demonstrate quality in higher education.
