Abstract

The urgent call by UNESCO to scale up interventions for the achievement of sustainable development goals motivated this study to assess the level and association of teachers' (n =107) and students' (n = 342) knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors (KAB) regarding education for sustainable development, focusing on Pili (Canarium ovatum). This is a subset of a larger project that involves Pili to contextualize learning and instructional materials. The researchers used a descriptive cross-sectional survey approach and distributed a questionnaire through Google Forms. KAB levels were categorized into poor, moderate, and high using descriptive data analysis and determined their association with one another using Pearson's Chi-square. The findings indicate that, although the associations among the KAB of teachers are distinct from those of the students, they both perceived that possessing favorable knowledge and attitudes are insufficient to generate positive behaviors. Thus, efforts to increase teachers' and students' motivation and involvement and to help them carry out favorable behaviors toward sustainable development are imperative. Given this, identifying the barriers to converting knowledge and attitudes into behaviors and considering the factors that involve the association of KAB in promoting sustainable development, particularly in education, are recommended.

Abstract

The early childhood stage is a phase that holds important basic development holistically, covering affective, psychomotor, and especially cognitive domains. This development will be able to be effectively reached with an appropriate learning process in kindergartens. This study aims to reveal a relevant approach to learning using motion and sound games in improving early childhood cognitive development. The method used in this study is Research and Development (RD) from Borg and Gall, involving 124 early childhoods and kindergarten teachers in the city of Cimahi, Indonesia, selected through convenience sampling. The instruments employed are questionnaires, observation notes, interviews, and desk evaluations (expert and practitioner judgment). The data are descriptively calculated through a t-test with p0.000 in order to reveal the learning model for improving children’s cognition through motion and sound. The results of this study show that the motion and sound–based models consist of design planning, learning process, and evaluation that are able to be implemented well and can be categorized as a model that is able to develop early childhood cognition, but it still needs to be innovated and continue to be creative again in more affordable learning steps for children. Studies with the related topics are expected to relate basic potentials and social skill optimization. It is also recommended that this study contributes to the development of learning in Indonesia

Abstract

Promoting digital literacies is the apparent goal of an extensive array of educational initiatives in all educational contexts. However, very limited attention has been directed toward the strategies of promoting students’ digital literacies in the literature. Thus, this qualitative study aims to identify the strategies of EFL teachers and school administrators in promoting EFL students’ digital literacies to thrive in the new normal challenges. Semi-structured interviews with 6 EFL teachers and 6 school admins from the Arab international schools in Kuala Lumpur were gathered using a convenient sampling technique. The qualitative data were analysed and reported thematically. The findings of the study revealed that teachers reported four strategies to promote students’ digital literacy: motivating students, conducting training workshops, actual use of digital technologies in the classroom, and enhancing classroom digital infrastructure. Similarly, school admins reported four strategies: rising parents’ awareness towards the importance of digital technologies, training teachers and students, enhancing classroom infrastructure and redesigning the EFL classroom. These findings offer implications for policymakers and researchers, especially those interested in enhancing students’ digital literacies. The results require further urgent large-scale investigations to address the factors that currently constrain the promotion of digital technologies.

Abstract

Metaverse—an incredible medium that combines features of virtual reality platforms such as online games, social media, and the Internet—is predicted to bring significant changes to human behavior. It is believed that social interaction and the quality of mental health can be at risk once Metaverse becomes more prevalent with adolescents predicted to be the most vulnerable group. This study intends to prove this prediction by examining the effect of online game addiction and social media addiction on the mental health quality of adolescents as the majority group with Metaverse access. This correlational study involved 700 students from 14 schools in the greater Malang area. Data were collected through the Metaverse Impact Instrument (MII) and analyzed partially using the T-test and simultaneously using the F-test to know the contribution of gender using an independent sample T-test. Previously, the assumptions of multicollinearity and heteroscedasticity assumption were also tested. The results indicate that online games and social media negatively affect mental health at a rate of 31.5%. These results provide empirical evidence for theoretical predictions regarding the impact of Metaverse on mental health quality in adolescents. As a follow-up, research is needed to develop educational intervention strategies, appropriate guidance, and counseling services that purpose is to: 1) integrate cultural and religious values into character education; 2) anticipate the potential risks of metaverse among adolescents.

Abstract

While physical activity can be one of the daily supports for good health that can help the educational process, the present study aims to determine the relationship between physical activity and academic achievement. It was quantitative correlational research involving 1045 students from 21 elementary schools (ESs) selected through proportional random sampling. Physical activity was measured by using the Assessment of Physical Activity Levels Questionnaire (APALQ), and academic achievement was investigated through the average scores of the previous semester's report card. The study revealed three categories of physical activity, namely ‘very active’, ‘moderately active’, and ‘inactive’. Less than 30 ES students (3%) were reported ‘very active’, 460 students (44%) were ‘moderately active’, and more than half (53%) were ‘inactive’. With a percentage of 33%, the overall average result of physical activity gained was 348, meaning that the average increase fell within the moderate range. While having a sig. value greater than 0.05 (0.529), the study suggests that there is no significant correlation between physical activity and academic performance. The study's weak correlation coefficient of 0.020 involves drawing the inference that there is no discernable relationship between physical activity and academic achievement on elementary school students.

Abstract

This article reports on the results of an in-depth analysis of the intentional daily behavior performed by mothers in facilitating the cognitive development of a child aged under five years old. This study employed a descriptive design. It involved 147 mothers (72 working mothers and 75 non-working mothers) who were selected using the purposive sampling technique (non-probability sampling). Research data were gathered using a questionnaire. The questionnaire contained two major components that evaluated a mother’s presence as the designer of the home environment (two indicators) and cognitive stimulation provided by a mother at home (six indicators). The collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics making use of the Microsoft Excel 16.10 version application. The results suggest that employment status does not influence a mother’s presence as the designer of the home environment. In other words, both working and non-working mothers have provided the best home environment for their child's cognitive development. However, regarding the fulfillment of the child's cognitive development needs, non-working mothers are able to supply more adequate stimulation than working mothers.

Abstract

Although bringing cases of environmental damage to court means prioritizing the principle of primum remedium by way of retributive justice or criminal justice, it unfortunately creates various problems including the practice of corruption, collusion and nepotism. Therefore, it is necessary for law enforcement officials to understand and apply restorative justice in environmental crime, which means prioritizing the principle of ultimum remedium, through civic engagement education. This research method includes social research which also covers the field of law since it analyzes positive laws that are relevant to solving problems using literature and other sources as needed. This research uses a juridical-normative legal approach which is very dependent on the researcher's conception of positive law. The results of this study indicate that law enforcement officials should understand their position as part of the community members who have duties and authorities based on the law, so that justice and ecological goals can be achieved in efforts to preserve the environment.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the learning implementation of Physical Education in public junior high schools in the city of Padang, Indonesia, paying particular attention to the learning activities of students and teachers, the models and approaches employed, and the degree of physical fitness of the students. This research is survey research involving students (n=100) and Physical Education teachers (n=10) from 5 schools in the urban city, and 5 schools in the suburbs. Questionnaires and Indonesian physical fitness tests for the 13–15- year age group were used to collect the research data. Descriptive statistics were used for the analysis. The findings indicated that teachers' and students' movement-related learning activities in physical education were evaluated as low. Physical education teachers have used sports techniques with the command method rather than modifying sports games as a model for learning. Only 20.00% of them are student-centered, with 80.00% of them being more teacher centered. Then, with a classification of less and very less, it was discovered that students' levels of physical fitness were below average, or 53.00%. In conclusion, to achieve the objectives of physical education, physical education teachers should significantly prepare for learning as well as become proficient in a wide range of efficient learning techniques (cognitive, affective, and psychomotor). Future research is required to validate the findings of this study, including the conception of a sports game-modified learning model in physical education

Abstract

Water issues, a commonly discussed issue in water STEM education, present students with a challenge to put their engineering design skills to the test in a STEM project. This study aimed to enhance and examine Grade 8 students’ creative thinking in the water STEM education learning unit. It involved purposively selected 45 eight-graders enrolled in a school situated in Khon Kaen, Thailand. The study was carried out in three weeks which equate to twelve hours of learning covered in six lesson plans. Applying the interpretive paradigm, this study adapted Barak and Doppelt (2000)’s Creative Thinking Scale (CTS) to assess students’ applying knowledge and creative thinking. The findings likely demonstrated that most of the portfolio elements may be interpreted for the attainment of creative thinking in layer of awareness, while some others could be viewed layers of observation, strategy, and reflection. This paper clarifies what and how students’ project could be interpreted in each layer of creative thinking. Further implications for setting up STEM education in school setting are proposed.
