Abstract

Research was done to elucidate the role of Ca2+ intracellular in stomatal movement induced by auxin. Two types of auxin (IAA and NAA) increased stomatal opening and the increase was concentration dependent. The addition of EGTA, Ruthenium red and Procaine as the modulator of Ca2+ concentration , inhibited stomatal opening induced by auxin. EGTA and procaine significantly inhibited somatal opening at 100 uM and 1 mM. Ruthenium red worked at lower concentrations which were 10 uM, 50 uM and 100 uM on LAA-induced stomatal opening, while on NAA-induced stomatal opening, Ruthenium red had an effect at 10 uM, 50 uM, 100 uM dan 1 mM. It is suggested that Ca2+ involves in stomatal opening induced by LAA and NAA as signaling agent.

Abstract

The aim of the research was to increase the production of seed potato size 31 - 60 grams by applying gibberellic acid (GA3). Seeds that passed their dormancy period were dipped in gibberellic acid solutions (10, 15 and 20 mg/L) for 15 minutes a day before planting. Control seeds were dipped in water. Seeds were then air dried for 24 hours. Seeds were planted in plots with length, width and height of 150 x 100 x 30 cm respectively with planting space 20 cm and planting depth 15 cm. The design was randomized block with four replications. The results showed that gibberellic acid enhanced shoot emergence. Gibberellic acid increased stem number, tuber number and yield per plant. Tuber number and yield of size M (31 ? 60 g) increased, whereas tuber number and yield of size LL decreased drastically. The optimum concentration of gibberellin for these increases was 15 mg/L. Plant height was not influenced by gibberellic acid.

Abstract

Millettia pinnata L. Panigrahi atau Pongamia pinnata L. Piere adalah tumbuhan legum yang menghasilkan biji dengan kandungan minyak yang cocok untuk biodiesel. Fenologi dan polinasi pada tanaman ini dipantau dan dimanipulasi untuk meningkatkan pembentukan biji dan hasil panen. Musim berbunga di Kununurra berlangsung selama satu bulan dari awal Oktober dan pembungaan terjadi tidak bersamaan baik pada satu tanaman maupun di antara tanaman yang berbeda. Dua spesies lebah lokal sebagai polinator, Megachile sp., dan Nomia sp., memiliki tingkat kunjungan yang sangat rendah (6-13 kunjungan) dengan puncak waktu kunjungan dari jam 9.00 sampai jam 10.00 dan periode aktivitas mencari makan yang pendek (dari jam 6.00 sampai 12.00). Hal ini mungkin terjadi karena sedikitnya volume nektar yang dihasilkan (1.0 ± 0.04 ?l) dan tingginya temperatur di Kununurra. Viabilitas polen yang tinggi (85 ± 3%) menurun tajam menjadi 10 ± 3% dengan penyimpanan selama satu tahun pada suhu 4oC, tetapi hanya sedikit menurun menjadi 62 ± 3% pada suhu penyimpanan -20oC dan -80oC. Kunjungan lebah madu (Apis mellifera) meningkatkan hasil panen biji dari 296 menjadi 4.981 g/pohon, tetapi hasil panen ini masih rendah dan sangat bervariasi.

Abstract

Various alternatives have been made to reduce the population of the Aedes aegypti mosquito that caused dengue fever, including the use of mosquito repellent lotions had contained DEET. To reduce the risks and negative impacts of mosquito repellent lotions contained DEET, one of the solutions was to use ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) essential oil as a natural mosquito repellent. This studied aims to obtain an anti-mosquito lotion formula with the active ingredient of ylang ylang essential oil and to determine the protection ability of ylang ylang essential oil as an insect repellent to Aedes aegyti. This study aims to determine the yield of ylang flower essential oil, to analyze the concentration of essential oil in lotion that provide the highest protection against Ae. aegypti, to analyze the preference of the respondents for the lotion formulation, and to determine whether there is sensitivity after using lotion containing ylang flower essential oil. Cananga essential oil in this study was obtained by steamed distillation which was then used as an anti-mosquito agent in lotion preparations. The average yield of ylang flower essential oil with three replications followed by the standard deviation (SD) was 0.63% ± 1.38 w/w. The highest protection ability of mosquito repellent lotion was F3 lotion with 5% essential oil. Lotion F3 in the first hour provided a protection ability of 96.3%, the second hour was 92.3%, and the third hour was 87% and decreased until the sixth hour to 75%. The most preferred formulation by respondents was lotion with 5% ylang – ylang essential oil. After used the anti-mosquito lotion, there was no sticky feeling on the skin and there were no symptoms of sensitivity.

Abstract

Melaleuca trichostachya Lindl. is a plant belongs to the family Myrtaceae which originates from of Australia. The leaf of this plant contains sessential oils. One of the biological activities of essential oils is as an antifungal. The aims of the study were to determine the yield of essential oils of M. trichostachya leaf, to analyze oil quality, chemical compounds, and the inhibition of essential oils on the fungi’s of Candida albicans. Fresh and dried M. trichostachya leaf as much as 200 g were extracted by steam distillation method with 3 replications. The essential oil content was calculated, the quality was tested, the chemical compounds were analyzed by Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The inhibition of essential oil against C. albicans was tested with paper discs on PDA media with a concentration of 25% w/w. The results showed that the yield of essential oil of M. trichostachya fresh leaf was 1.00±0,058% while the yield of dried leaf was lower, which was 0.77±0,038%. The quality of essential oils was good in terms of organoleptic, purity, and acid numbers. The main compound consists of eucalyptol and alpha terpinolene and has inhibitory power against the fungus C. albicans.
