Abstract

Novel is a kind of literacy work that contains of sentences. Every sentences has grammatical and lexical devices in sentences or text that is called cohesive devices. This study aims at to know the types of cohesive devices in novel written by an Indonesian popular writer, Andrea Hirata. The title of the novelis Laskar Pelangi, that novel has been translated into English entitled “The Rainbow Troops”. This Study analyze English version of this novel. The method to analyze is descriptive qualitativee. The data of this study are all sentences that contain of cohesive devices in chapter 30 of this novel. The result of this study show that, all types of grammatical and lexical devices exist in chapter 30. Where, grammatical devices is the mostly used in this chapter. Reference devices are the mostly used than the two grammatical, substitution and conjunction. Personal reference is a type of reference devices. It can be proved base on discussion of this research, give the fact that reference device is a criteria of child literature, in this case is Andrea Hirata’s The Rainbow Troops novel talk about children and their childhood. From the previous study also concluded that, children writing also have reference devices as the most frequently used in their writing about literature.

Abstract

This article discuss about Word formation that conceived of as the process by which words are brought into existence. This suggests that words do not exist in a vacuum; they are usually composed. This research examines autistic child in SLB Padang as a participant in conversation activity who use word formation process when communicate with other. Conversation activity was used to collect data about word formation process used by autistic child and also qualitative and descriptive method to describe and explain the processes of word formation used by autistic child. the aim of this paper to discover the word formation process used by autistic child  when communicating with people especially when the teacher in the teaching and learning process in schools. From a linguistic point, an autistic child is a child who has limitations in the areas of socialization and communication. The processes of word formation were analyzed by morphological studies. The formation processes of autistic children found word in a conversation with the teacher, namely: derivation, reduplication, acronym and initialism, borrowing, clipping, compounding and blending. From the data analysis found that the dominant word formation process used autistic child is a derivation. The data used was conversation between teacher and autistic child were recorded and transcribed when the process of teaching and learning in class. The collected data are grouped based on the process of forming words.

Abstract

Nama pribadi adalah nama yang dimiliki oleh perorangan yang digunakan sebagai identitas pribadi di kehidupan sosial. Nama pribadi juga dapat mengidentifikasi budaya, agama, atau asal-usul dari kehidupan seseorang, karena di dalam nama pribadi memiliki makna di dalam pembuatannya. Tujuan utama di dalam penulisan ini adalah untuk melihat perubahan-perubahan yang ada pada nama pribadi orang Minang dan faktor-faktor yang dapat mempengaruhi dalam perubahan nama pribadi orang Minang di Padang berdasarkan tiga generasi, yakni generasi pertama (1960-1979), generasi kedua (1980-1999), dan generasi ketiga (2000-2010). Metode yang digunakan di dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif. Data di dalam penelitian ini terdapat 90 nama orang Minang yang di bagi menjadi 30 nama per generasinya. Hasil dari penelitian ini didapatkan bahwa ada 5 tipe nama pribadi orang Minang di Padang yang ditemukan. Pada generasi pertama, tipe nama pribadi yang paling banyak ditemukan adalah nama berdasarkan harapan/doa yakni 17 nama (56%). Pada generasi kedua, tipe nama pribadi yang paling banayk ditemukan adalah nama kombinasi sebanyak 12 nama (40%) serta pada generasi ketiga, nama kombinasi yang paling banyak ditemukan sebanyak 11 nama (36%). Selain itu, ada 3 faktor yang mempengaruhi dari perubahan nama orang Minang di Padang yaitu, faktor sosial-budaya, faktor bahasa, serta faktor fungsi dan motivasi. Dari hasil penelitian, dapat dikatakan bahwa nama pribadi seseorang tidak hanya digunakan sebagai simbol dari sebuah identitas namun memiliki suatu makna tertentu yang terkandung di dalamnya.

Abstract

 Tapan dialect is one of dialect of Minangkabaunese in Tapan. There are so many dead words or words that been forgotten by Tapan society nowaday. Words that are no longer used or dead words that happen day by day can make language death happen. This paper explains the causes of dead words in Basa Ampek Balai Tapan subdistrict and explain the word class of those dead words. According to the result of analysis it can be concluded that there are many factors that causes dead words occur in Basa Ampek Balai Tapan dialect, Pesisir Selatan regency such as language contact, the influence of globalization, feel proud of using lingua franca, the objects do not exist anyomore, less care on their own dialect and the words sound impolite to hear.This paper agrees that endangered languages are worth saving so we need to be aware about many factors contribute to language death.Keywords : dead words, dead language, dialect, Minangkabaunese

Abstract

Social dialect is a branch of dialectology discusses about different language used because of social socio-economic background and educational background. From those background differences, it turns out to cause linguistic phenomena in the use of language which is one of the symbols as a determinant of social status. Most researchers have studied about different language used due to social status that discussed the language variety, meanwhile in this research the different language used is discussed in three aspect such as different diction, different pronunciation and different suprasegmental (stress) between employees and labourers in Padang. The method used in this research is by provoking the informant to utter the words researcher intended by using interview guideline. The data are words that are explained in comparative description form. The result of this research is there are found 5 types of different diction, 3 types of different pronunciation with the same diction and 3 types of different stressed sound with the same diction used between employees and labourers in Padang.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out forms of language hegemony of English and factors motivating language hegemony of English into Bahasa Indonesia found in posts on Facebook communities of Indonesian android smartphone users. The method used in this research was descriptive. The data of the research were texts of 150 posts obtained from 10 Facebook groups. In other words, the research data consisted of 150 texts. Out of 150 texts, it was found 244 frequencies of forms of language hegemony of English and 220 frequencies of factors motivating language hegemony of English into Bahasa Indonesia. The results showed that forms of language hegemony of English were: borrowing as the most dominant form, language interference, code mixing, and code switching. It indicated that the hegemony in this case occured in integrating of the two languages rather than totally dominating in which it was only the language of dominant group was used. Meanwhile, factors motivating language hegemony of English found were social interaction as the most influencing one and socio-cultural change.

Abstract

The history of English language has three periods of time; Old English, Middle English, and Modern English. The linguistic forms in English development are different each period. This research aims to find out one of the changes, that is, the affix changes from Middle English to Modern English form that found in both of The Miller’s Tale Story Middle English and Modern English versions. This research also aims to find out the spelling changes in affixes. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data, which are the collection of words that have affixes found in The Miller’s Tale, were identified based on the base of the words and its affixes and its were classified based on the type of its functions. Based on data analysis, there are seven affixes in Middle English which have been changed in Modern English form. These changes occur in the deletion of vowel, change of vowel, substitution of the affix, and elimination of the affix. The spelling change also influenced the change in suffixes. Some of the vocabularies change into the new words and some of the words change only in its vowel.

Abstract

 Slang is the informal language which is used in a particular group of people especially used by teenagers in their activities to communicate each other. This research paper aimed to identify the characteristics of slang and the dominance slang used in Eminem songs. This research paper used Abadi’s (2009, p.17) theory about the characteristics of slang. This study used qualitative approach with descriptive method. The writer found that the total data of slangs in Eminem songs were 47 slangs. There were 13 data of creativity,27 data of flippant, 5 data of fresh, and 2 data of onomatopoeic. The most dominance slang used in Eminem songs is Flippant.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to figure out what are the archaic words of Minangkabaunese language found in Padang_Lua sub-dialect. Type of this research is descriptive qualitative in order to describe what are the causes of the extinction in certain words. This research successfully figured out that there are thirty one percents of archaic words found in Padang Lua sub-dialect by using a hundred words of Minangkabaunese language which are potentially become the archaic words. The factors of archaic words in Padang Lua sub-dialect caused by migration, bilingualism, intervention of Indonesian language, decreasing number of old generations, inter marriage, and technological developments. The main factor that contributes dominantly, the first is intervention of Indonesian language and the second is migration. Thus, it can be concluded that intervention of Indonesian language take an important role in causing words into archaic words.

Abstract

This article, a part of dissertation entitled  Developing Basic English Grammar Teaching Material based on Interactive Multimedia at University Level, presents the results of a study conducted to find the model of Basic English Grammar teaching material based on interactive multimedia needed by the students. This empirical research employed both quantitative and qualitative analyses. Seventy eight students of English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang were involved. The students  were required to articulate their need on a design of Basic English Grammar teaching material based on interactive multimedia. The data were collected through an open questionnaire. The first result is that Basic English Grammar teaching material based on interactive multimedia is very needed (with the score 3.1 out of 4). Second, the result indicates the organization of Basic English Grammar teaching material based on interactive multimedia. The organization consists of six parts. They are Time to watch/sing/read, Time to chat, Time to Focus, Time for fun practice, Time for tube, and Time for action. Third, the students have different learning style. Fourty two students (53.84%) have visual learning style. Twenty two students (28.21%) have audio learning style. The rest, fourteen students (17.95%) have kinestetic learning style. Four, the finding shows the students have their favorite movies, colors, and music. The students like comedy/humor, drama, horror, dokumentary, and action movies; they love pop, jazz, rock, country, and rap music; they adore blue, green, black, pink, and red color. Another important research finding is almost all students (91%) have their own laptop. Those findings will be considerations in designing the Basic English Grammar teaching material based on interactive multimedia. Further research to see the effectiveness of the model of Basic English Grammar teaching material based on interactive multimedia needs to be done.
