Abstract

This study examined the learning experiences of students of English as a Foreign Language in a culture trip that was conducted within the students' own multicultural society (Indonesia).  The culture trip was aimed at providing the students with hands-on experience to learn about cross-cultural adjustment, skills to relate to people of other cultures, to be independent, and to act responsibly. Those skills are parts of the skills that people need to perform in the 21 st century environments. The study was guided by a research question: what were the students' learning experiences during the culture trip? The qualitative data for answering the research question were collected from the students' individual written reports of the trip, and the results of open-ended questionnaires given after the trip. The findings showed that for many of the students, the trip was their first independent travel experience which provided not only cross-cultural adjustment learning experience but also learning lessons about many of the skills needed in the 21 st century such as communication, using information technology, being self-directed, independent and responsible, managing goals and time, collaboration and working in a team. The study may be useful for teachers of language who would like to provide cross-cultural experiences and soft skills to the students to function effectively in 21st-century environments. Keywords: authentic learning activities; cross-cultural adjustment; 21st century skills

Abstract

Malang is popular with one of its traditional dance that is Malang Puppet Mask (Wayang Topeng Malang, shortened into WTM). WTM has several characteristics, they are: (1) retelling Panji stories; (2) all dancers wear puppet mask with its own characters; (3) puppet master is usually performed by male and is responsible to tell stories and narrate the dialogs; (4) the stage has its definite patterns and cannot be changed according to the puppet master’s will. Panji’s stories and narration are based on folk lore so that the form and the structure are based on the puppet master’s memories, perception and variation, WTM artists, and the society. Sanggar Asmoro Bangun as one of WTM groups, located in Kedungmonggo village, Malang District, presents the dance into two versions, they are: (1) full duration to perform Rabine Panji (Panji’s Marroage); and (2) short version in performing Rabine Panji. Both versions influence several aspects in performing the dances, such as, the structure, the time, the scenes and the music.

Abstract

Abstract: Individual Autonomy is a prominent feature of women writers. It plans to advance a dream of self-governing self as basically autonomous and independent, a dream that precludes the inevitable connectedness from securing selves and the way that their inundation in systems of connections frames their wants, yearnings, to be sure their extremely personalities. As such, what is denied is that the self is basically social. Toni Morrison, an Afro-American woman writer, works strenuously to get autonomous self to her female protagonist. In her novels, she clearly describes the life of African-American women in white dominated in American society. Combining the aims of African-American Freedom Movement and Woman’s Liberation, she produces literature which is indisputably black. In this research article, Toni Morrison’s famous novel Sula has been discussed through two chief characters, Nel and Sula. The novelist tries to overcome racial boundaries in order to gain animated self with striking balance. To be specific, the chief protagonists of Toni Morrison tend to find expression amidst their sullen, irritable, and dangerously regressive existence, to find dependence of their own, complaisant and reliant beings.   permalink/DOI: dx.doi.org/10.17977/um015v46i12018p001

Abstract

The Communication Strategy is a systematic technique used by foreign language learners to express their ideas when they have difficulties to communicate due to their incomplete mastery of B2. Konversation course is a subject in which the students are to speak freely with a particular topic; moreover, the learners have been equipped with simple linguistic rules, so that they have a tendency to seek ways to make the message acceptable.   Communication strategy that is widely used by JSJ UM students are transfers, because not only they literally translate concepts but they also use terms and vocabulary  from their mother tongue  and English  in uttering German.  The  reasons  that  influence  the  use  of  these  forms  of  communication strategy are the students’ insufficiency in mastering grammar and vocabulary skills to be able to communicate in a variety of fields because they are still at the early stages of learning.
