Abstract

The incidence of diabetes mellitus in Indonesia continues to increase. There are some complications in the diabetic condition, one of which is diabetic ulcer. Diabetic ulcers in diabetes patient can increase the risk of amputation and expensive treatment costs, so the alternative treatmeant such as Merremia mammosa wich has antiinflamatory and antidiabetic is needed. This study aimed to determine the comparison of the number of macrophage in the incisional wound in hyperglycemic male wistar rats between treatment with Merremia mammosa extract and NaCl. The in vivo test was done by creating wound incision on the mice backs and treated with gentamycin ointment 5% in a positive control group, NaCl in a negative control group and Merremia mammosa extract in a dose of 100m), 200mg, 400mg in treatment group. The result obtained by counting the number of macrophage in histopatholgy examination. The result showed the number of macrophage were 0,36 cells/field of view in a negative control group, 0,52 cells/field of view in a positive control group, 0,48 cells/field of view in all Merremia mammosa treatment groups. The data analysis showed no significant difference with p-value of 0,729. In conclusion, there was no significant difference between the used of Merremia mammosa extract and NaCl on full thickness incisional wounds of hyperglycemic male wistar rats. Abstract

Humerus fracture is a disruption of normal architecture in humerus bone . This study was conducted to identify The Range Of Motion (ROM), muscle strength of arm and analyze the comparison of the ROM and muscle strength on humerus fracture patients between operative and non-operative treatment. This research used non-experimental study with cross-sectional design. Observed variables were Range of Motion and muscle strength each measured by goniometer and muscle strength scale, respectively. Comparing to these circumstances, there were significant difference in shoulder abduction, shoulder flexion, shoulder extension, elbow extension and elbow flexion between operative treatment patients and non-operative treatment patients at dr. Abstract

Fractures are a serious health problem in Indonesia due to increasing prevalence. The healing process of fracture is disturbed by the oxidative stress that caused by imbalance quantity of free radical and antioxidant. An antioxidant such as polyphenol, which can be found in cocoa, is needed to suppress oxidative stress. The study aimed to investigate the effect of the ethanolic extract of cacao on fracture healing process in a rat model through MDA concentration and histopatological appearance. This study is in vivo experimental study with post-test only controlled group design. 30 male Wistar rats were randomized and divided into 5 groups. 1 group was rats without fractured. The negative control and three treatment groups were rats with fractured manually on left tibia under anesthesia and immobilized by bandage. The treatment groups treated with cocoa ethanolic extract in a dose of 125 mg/kgBW, 250 mg/kgBW, and 500 mg/kgBW orally for 21 days. The result showed that there was a significant different between the treatment groups and the negative control group on MDA concentration and histopatological appearance (p>0,05). The corelation between them were strong and had negative direction (R=-0,771). The study concluded that cocoa ethanolic extract had a positive effect to supress oxidation stress and increases the number of osteoblast on fracture healing process.   Key words: cocoa ethanolic extract, polyphenol, fracture healing process, oxidative stress

Abstract

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the cause of 7,3 million death globally in 2008. The main pathophysiology process that leads to CHD is atherosclerosis which is caused by high LDL cholesterol level. The aim of this study was to explore bay leaf and celery leaf infusion effect on reducing LDL cholesterol level in dyslipidemic rat model. The type of this study was true experimental research using wistar rat (Rattus novergicus) as the sample. The rats were induced by high fat diet and PTU for two weeks then each of the group were given either bay leaf infusion, celery leaf infusion, simvastatin (positive control), or aquadest (negative control) for a week. The measurement of LDL level used Friedewald formulation. Data was analyzed using paired sample t test and one way ANOVA. As the result there was a significance reduction on LDL level after treatment with bay leaf (p=0,013) and celery leaf infusion (p=0,035) but there was no significance difference between groups (p=0,293). It was concluded that bay leaf and celery leaf infusion could reduce the LDL level in dyslipidemic wistar rat but there was no difference on the capability of the two different leafs on reducing LDL level. Abstract

Asthma is a chronic inflamation of respiratory tract which cause bronchial hypereactivity to some triggers with dispneu as the main symptomp. Stress and emotional disturbance like anxiety can be the trigger of asthma attack. This research is to find out the relationship between anxiety level and the frequency of dispneu in asthma bronchial patients at SMF Pulmo, dr. Soebandi General Hospital, Jember. This research used a cross sectional observational analytical method and HARS questionare. Based on our observation to 30 patients, Chi square analytical test showed 0,000 significancy level with p < 0,05. It means that there is a relationship of anxiety levels with the frequency of dispneu in asthma bronchial patients at SMF Pulmo, dr.Soebandi General Hospital, Jember.   Keywords: anxiety, dispneu, asthma bronchial

Abstract

Cosmos caudatus H.B.K leaves is known to have many active substances with antimicrobial effect such as saponin, flavonoid, poliphenol, volatile oil, costunolide, and 4,4’-bipyridin. This research is conducted to prove the antimicrobial effect of Cosmos caudatus leaves extract on gram positive Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in vitro. The sample of this research is served by Microbiology Laboratorium of Brawijaya University. An experimental study with tube dilution method was carried out. The treated groups are groups of bacteria treated with Cosmos caudatus leaves extract with a range concentrations of 14%; 12%; 10%; 8%; and 6%. The control group is groups treated with 0% extract. The result indicates that the MIC (Minimal Inhibitory Concentration) can not be observed due to the extract’s turbid green colour. The MBC (Minimal Bactericidal Concentration) is 14% for MRSA. Data analysis with CI=95% shows a significant difference of effects on the number of MRSA colonies growth (Anova, p = 0,000) with the change of extract concentrations. The correlation regression test shows a strong association between the extract concentration and the number of colonies growth (Correlation, r = -0,754, p=0,000). Cosmos caudatus leaves extract has antimicrobial effect on MRSA.Keywords : Cosmos caudatus leaves estract, Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), antimicrobial.

Abstract

Mental disorders is one of the health problems in developing countries and developed countries. One of the biggest problems faced by those with mental disorders is the presence of that and negative attitudes due to lack of public knowledge. Several previous studies have found that education increase knowledge and change the stigma and negative attitudes on medical students. The purpose of this study was to analyze the differences of knowledge, stigma and attitude between first year and final year student of the Medical Faculty of Jember University toward mental disorders. This research was a quantitative research with cross sectional approach. The samples were the students class of 2012 and 2014. The independent variable was the class of the students, while the dependent variable was knowledge, stigma, authoritarianism, benevolence, social restrictions, and istatistik of health community. The data was analyzed using chi-square test. Based on the test result, it was found that the variables with a significant difference is stigma (p= 0.001) and authoritarianism (p = 0.025). In conclusion there were significant differences on stigma and attitudes of authoritarianism between the first year and final year students to the mental disorders. Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common cause of joint pain, but there’s still no satisfying treatment that can inhibit degradation of articular cartilage in OA. One approach that is being widely studied is through activation of PPAR-γ. Many studies have shown effect of PPAR-γ on OA either in vitro or in vivo in animal model. On the other hand, the main risk factor of OA is obesity. Obesity generally followed by increased of leptin level due to leptin resistance. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of pioglitazone as PPAR-γ agonist in reducing the level of MMP-9 and MMP-13 in OA chondrocyte with hyperleptinemia. MMP-9 and MMP-13 are key role enzymes that degrades cartilage in OA. This study use IL-1β-induced chondrocyte exposed to pioglitazone. Pioglitazone 0,1μM, 1μM, and 10μM reduce MMP-9 and MMP-13 level. Whereas pioglitazone together with leptin 10μg/ml reduce the decrease level of MMPs compared to the group without leptin. Leptin inhibit the effect of pioglitazone in reducing the level of MMPs.Keywords: OA, leptin, pioglitazone, MMP-9, MMP-13

Abstract

Malaria is still a major problem in the international and national scale. World Health Organization (WHO) states that based on World malaria report, world cases of malaria reached 216 million and an estimated of 655 thousand people died, in 2010. Overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines by phagocytic cells and activated endothelial cells occurs In the severe malaria. Bangle (Zingiber cassumunar Roxb.) has the potential to be developed as a new complementary therapy that is expected to prevent fatal malaria complications. The research objective is to test in vivo, the activity of a compound of standardized Bangle (Zingiber cassumunar Roxb.) fraction extract as a complementary therapy along with standard anti-malarial drug, artemisin. This is a true experimental study using twenty-five mice Balb / C male which are divided into five groups; the negative control group, positive control group treated KI, II, and III stimulation with each of the compounds of standardized fraction extract of bangle ( FEBT-h, FEBT-dcm, FEBT-m) for 14 days. Oneway ANOVA test showed the result of p = 0.01 (p <0.05). Continued with LSD test that showed the most significant in lowering the degree of parasitaemia is the group of methanol (FEBT-m).Keywords: Zingiber cassumunar Roxb, fractionated extracts, complementary therapies, malaria

Abstract

Coronary heart disease is an important health problem. It is estimated that the death rate from coronary heart disease by 23,4 millions in 20130 (WHO, 2009). Excessive physical activity can cause oxidative stress which lead to atherosclerosis. Mung bean sprouts (Vigna radiata (L)) contain vitamin E, vitamin C, fenol, flavonoid, fitosterol, and other minerals. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of mung beans sprout extract on on the thicknes of the tunica intima-media on physical stress-induced atherosclerosis of male wistar rat. This research is true experimental study using 20 male wistar rat were divided into five groups: negative control, positive control and treatment groups P1, P2, P3 (physical stress + bean sprout extract 50 mg/day, 100 mg/day, 200 mg/day for 10 days).
