Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using WhatsApp groups to improve students' vocabulary mastery. The method used was quantitative with a pre-experimental research design with a sample of 15 class VII.1 student using a cluster random sampling technique. In obtaining data, the researcher used pretest and posttest as instruments. The results of the data analysis showed that by using WhatsApp groups, students' vocabulary mastery increased. This is evidenced by the t-test value which is smaller than P (0.000 <0.05), which means that H0 in this study is rejected and H1 is accepted. So, it concluded that the use of WhatsApp group is effective in increasing the vocabulary mastery of class VII.1 student at UPT SPF SMP Negeri 40 Makassar.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the students’ perception of teacher oral corrective feedback used in the classroom. The method of the research was a descriptive qualitative method. The participants of the study were first-year students of the English Language Education Department, Universitas Negeri Makassar in the academic year 2022/2023. Seven students were selected as the participants using a purposive sampling technique. The instrument of this research was an interview. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data collected in the interview transcript. Overall, the students have both positive and negative perceptions of oral corrective feedback. The students revealed that they believe oral corrective feedback is needed in their learning performances as it 1) helps the learning progress 2) makes the students aware of the error 3) makes the students feel motivated and appreciated. In contrast, the negative perceptions found from oral corrective feedback are 1) feeling anxious and disappointed 2) reducing self-esteem 3) labelling. Even though students’ perceptions varied, they all accepted every feedback needed for their performances. Lastly, they expected to receive oral corrective feedback with some encouragement and appreciation. Thus, it is concluded the students generally have a positive perception with some notes on teacher oral corrective feedback.

Abstract

Abstract. This study is to describe the influencing factors of students’ affective silence in English classroom interaction. It used descriptive qualitative method taking all twelfth-grade students of science class consisting of 31 participants as the data resources. Three instruments were utilized to gain the data, namely (1) observation, (2) questionnaire, and (3) interview. The findings of this study show that there were ten affective factors influencing students’ silence in the classroom. They are (1) feeling nervous, (2) lack of self-esteem, (3) lack of self-confidence, (4) fear of making mistakes and worrying about other people's judgment, (5) worrying about their inability, (6) feeling unable to meet the teacher's expectations, (7) students’ personality, (8) avoiding awkwardness, (9) feeling embarrassed, and (10) avoiding showing off their ability. These factors empirically indicate that students' silence during the teaching and learning process takes place in the classroom is not always influenced by their cognitive inability but the affective aspect turns out to be something that quite dominates their inability to express themselves. Based on these findings, it takes into account that the students were not able to participate in teaching and learning process because of affective factors that trigger their inactivity.Keywords: Affective, Passiveness, Silence

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discuss and discover how students feel about using weekly quizzes in an EFL classroom. This research used mixed methods (QUAL-Quan). The population of in this study was the 3rd year students of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar. Cluster random sampling was used to choose the 45 students for this study. The research used observation, interview, and a questionnaire as instruments. As a result, the students' perceptions of the utilization of weekly quizzes reflect this research. The result of the research showed that the students showed that students' perception of using weekly quizzes in EFL classroom in a positive category. According to the results of the research, it can be concluded that the use of weekly quizzes in EFL classroom can be a tool to determine and measure students' understanding of the material that has been taught previously.

Abstract

Pelatihan ini bertujuan memberikan pengetahuan dan pemahaman secara teoritis dan praktis kepada mahasiswa program studi pendidikan bahasa Inggris, Pascasarjana UNM yang memogramkan matakuliah Educational Psychology semester 1 tahun akademik 2022/2023 mengenai penulisan telaah kritis. Metode yang digunakan adalah ceramah, diskusi, konsultasi, dan presentasi tugas akhir. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan bahwa para peserta secara kualitatif mampu memeroleh pengetahuan dan pemahaman yang komprehensif mengenai konsep-konsep penulisan telaah kritis dan mampu menghasilkan sebuah telaah kritis mengenai kajian Psikolinguistik dalam perspektif bahasa Inggris, dan mereka secara kuantitaif mampu menghasilkan sebuah telaah kritis (90 %) dengan eksistensi kekurangan pada bagian-bagian tertentu khususnya kritik dan selebihnya (10 %) mahasiswa secara individu yang tergabung dalam beberapa kelompok masih mengalami kendala memahami konsep-konsep dasar tersebut.

Abstract

This socialization activity aims to provide knowledge and understanding for health students and health workers on the opportunities and challenges of working abroad and open their horizons about the preparation needed to work in overseas hospitals. In this activity, the lecturers gave presentations and discussed various things that are required if you want to work abroad, including qualifications, requirements, experience, language skills, and cultural adjustment. This activity was attended by several leaders, lecturers, students, and alumni of ITKESMU Sidrap, as well as health workers from other health institutions around Sidrap. The results of this socialization activity showed that the participants were very enthusiastic about participating in the training and acknowledged that this activity was very beneficial for them. The participants also suggested that there should be follow-up activities in the form of structured and comprehensive preparatory training to work abroad.

Abstract

Kegiatan pendampingan ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pengetahuan, pemahaman dan keterampilan dasar bagi para staf editor pengelola jurnal IJOBEC tentang tampilan dan sistem pengelolaan jurnal yang baik. Dalam kegiatan ini, para dosen memberikan presentasi dan diskusi tentang berbagai hal yang diperlukan jika ingin mengelola jurnal, meliputi: tampilan menu jurnal di web, cara mengedit tampilan menu jurnal, dan cara mengisi artikel pada web jurnal. Kegiatan ini diikuti oleh para dosen pengabdi, kaprodi BEC, dan dua orang staff pengelola jurnal IJOBEC. Hasil dari kegiatan pendampingan ini menunjukkan bahwa para staf pengelola jurnal IJOBEC sangat terbantu dalam merancang tampilan jurnal di web, mengedit tampilan menu yang tersedia dan mengetahui cara memasukkan artikel di jurnal tersebut. Mereka sangat antusias dalam mengikuti kegiatan ini dan mengakui bahwa kegiatan ini sangat bermanfaat bagi mereka. Para staf pengelola jurnal IJOBEC dan kaprodi BEC juga berharap dan menyarankan agar adanya kegiatan lanjutan sehingga jurnal tersebut dapat menerbitkan artikel tepat waktu tiap edisi dan dapat menjadi jurnal yang terakreditasi. This assistance activity aims to provide basic knowledge, understanding, and skills for editorial staff managing the IJOBEC journal regarding the appearance and good journal management system. In this activity, the lecturer gave a presentation. They discussed various things that are needed if you want to manage a journal, including: how to display the journal menu on the web, how to edit the appearance of the journal menu, and how to fill in articles on the web journal. This activity was attended by service lecturers, heads of the BEC study programs, and two management staff of the IJOBEC journal. The results of this mentoring activity show that the managing staff of the IJOBEC journal is greatly assisted in designing the journal's appearance on the web, editing the available menu views, and knowing how to enter articles into the journal. They were very enthusiastic about participating in this activity and admitted that this activity was very useful for them. The managing staff of the IJOBEC journal and the head of the BEC study program also hope and suggest that further activities be carried out so that the journal can publish articles on time for each edition and can become an accredited journal.

Abstract

Pengajaran kosakata berbasis tugas integratif menyajikan lima sampai tujuh kata baru kepada siswa dalam setiap pertemuan yang disajikan oleh guru secara lisan dan tertulis. Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini adalah untuk memberikan salah satu metode pengajaran kosakata bahasa Inggris yang dapat bermanfaat bagi guru- guru bahasa Inggris MAN Pangkep dalam mengajarkan kosakata secara terpadu dengan keterampilan berbahasa Inggris yang lain. Kegiatan-kegiatan yang dilakukan dalam metode pengajaran ini dirancang untuk memfasilitasi siswa dalam melatihmahirkan dan menggunakan kata-kata tersebut dalam keterampilan menyimak, membaca, menulis berbicara yang dilakukan baik secara individu, berpasangan maupun berkelompok. Kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa guru secara teoritis mampu mengimplementasikan metode pengajaran kosakata ini dengan baik sehingga 80-95 % dari 69 siswa sebagai peserta pelatihan ini mampu mengingat kata-kata yang telah diajarkan. Dengan demikian, kegiatan ini menyimpulkan bahwa siswa bisa mengingat kata-kata bahasa Inggris dengan baik bila mereka diajar dengan berbagai macam kegiatan yang bervariasi dan integratif dengan keterampilan-keterampilan berbahasa lainnya.

Abstract

Keterlibatan anggota PMR dalam berbagai kegiatan kepalangmerahan merupakan karya dan bakti nyata. Dalam interaksinya para anggota PMR dituntut untuk memiliki keterampilan komunikasi interpersonal yang baik. Hal ini didasarkan pada sebuah logika yang sangat sederhana bahwa proses komunikasi interpersonal dapat menentukan perubahan sikap dan tingkah laku anggota dalam organisasi yang disebabkan oleh adanya keterbukaan dan kepercayaan antar individu yang tergabung didalamnya. Oleh karena itu, penting bagi anggota PMR untuk memiliki kemampuan komunikasi interpersonal dalam interaksi sosial pada organisasi yang menempah mereka menjadi sosok yang terampil, kreatif, dan bersahabat. Setelah proses pelatihan komunikasi interpersonal peserta yang merupakan anggota PMR mulai mengetahui pentingnya memiliki kemampuan komunikasi interpersonal serta beberapa peserta mulai mempraktikkan cara menerapkan kemampuan komunikasi interpersonal.

Abstract

English for Youth Generation, adalah sebuah program yang dirancang oleh mahasiswa pendidikan profesi guru bidang studi Bahasa Inggris gelombang 2 tahun 2022 untuk memberikan satu prakarsa perubahan demi menciptakan peluang kepada generasi muda dalam mengembangkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris. Program ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan peserta dalam bahasa Inggris secara efektif, sehingga mereka dapat lebih siap untuk menghadapi tantangan global di masa depan. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan adalah mengajarkan Bahasa Inggris melalui kegiatan yang variatif dan menyenangkan seperti bermain game kosa kata serta belajar melalui lagu. Hasil yang diperoleh pada kegiatan ii adalah, setelah mengikuti beberapa rangkaian kegiatan, peserta dapat menunjukkan peningkatan pengetahuan Bahasa Inggris dasar mereka khususnya pada pengetahuan kosa kata.
