Abstract

This research discusses about spelling errors which are committed by the students in writing a personal letter. Participants in this research are Office Administration Students in SMK N 3 Padang, XI AP 1 class which consists of 24 students. The identified problems of this research are what kinds of spelling errors—insertion, omission, substitution, and transposition errors—which are committed by the students in writing a personal letter, and what kinds of parts of speech from spelling errors which are committed by the students. The objectives of this research are to find out what kinds of spelling error which are committed by the students, and what kinds of part of speech from spelling errors which are committed by the students. Writing test is an instrument that is used in this research. The result of this research shows that students commit all kinds of spelling errors in their writing, and students’ spelling errors also occur in all kinds of parts of speech. Students’ spelling errors mostly occur in substitution error in their writing. Then, noun part is the highest part which occurs from students’ spelling errors.

Abstract

This research is aimed to analyze students’ ability in using scanning techniques in reading text at second year of English Department students at Universitas Negeri Padang. The population of this research was whole population of K2-16 class of English Department. The instrument of the research was reading test consist of eight texts by using scanning technique. Students were asked to answer 30 reading questions within the predetermined time in each text which had been calculated with Word per Minute (WPM) formula. The result of the data analysis shows; the average score of students in identifying statistic/amount/quality is quite good, the average score of students in identifying date/time is good, the average score of students in identifying definition is very good, the average score of students in identifying reason/cause is poor, in identifying name/place is poor, in identifying location/position is more than enough, the average score of students in identifying characteristic is enough, and the average score of students in identifying process is poor. Moreover, the students’ average score for the whole reading test was more than enough.

Abstract

AbstrakTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis kemampuan grammar mahasiswa dalam menggunakan one, another, the other, other, others, and the others as indefinite and definite adjectives/pronouns serta persepsi mereka dalam proses perkuliahan. Sampel penelitian ini adalah 30 orang mahasiswa tingkat II Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris tahun masuk 2011/2012 yang diambil secara acak. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan untuk mendapatkan data adalah tes grammar dimana mahasiswa diminta untuk mengisi kalimat rumpang dengan one, another, the other, other, others, atau the others. Waktu yang diberikan untuk mengerjakan tes adalah 90 menit. Untuk mengetahui persepsi mahasiswa tentang proses perkuliahan, mereka diminta untuk mengisi angket yang berisi 19 pernyataan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan grammar mahasiswa dalam menggunakan one, another, the other, other, others, dan the others adalah lemah (47.72%). Hal ini dibuktikan dari hasil pengisian angket oleh mahasiswa bahwa lemahnya kemampuan mahasiswa disebabkan oleh materi yang terlalu sedikit penjelasannya dan ketertarikan dan motivasi mahasiswa untuk belajar yang terlalu lemah.Key words: Indefinite adjective, definite adjective, indefinite pronoun, definite pronoun, perception

Abstract

This research was a descriptive research that aimed to identify the tests developed by senior high school English teachers in Padang using High Order Thinking Skills criteria. This study also aimed to determine the mostly-used criteria of HOTS in the tests. The sample in this study were mid semester tests and semester tests developed by English teachers from MGMP Bahasa Inggris SMA kota Padang. The tests used in this study were from grade XI of 2016/2017. Each test had two packages (A and B). This study used instrument in the form of indicators from HOTS criteria and Bloom’s HOTS criteria.               From the result of the tests developed by senior high school English teachers of Padang using the criteria of Higher Order Thinking Skills, it showed that the tests developed had used the HOTS criteria. As a result of the analysis of the two tests, 30% of High Order Thinking Skills questions were found in the tests. The result of this research also found that the mostly-used HOTS criteria in the tests are Creating and Deduction. The Knowledge dimensions found in the tests are Conceptual Knowledge, Procedural Knowledge, and Metacognitive Knowledge.

Abstract

This study analyzes the student ability in differentiating contrast adverbial clause(Concession and opposition) at English department of Universitas Negeri Padang. This research is a descriptive qualitative research used in analysing the students ability in differentiating contrast adverbial clause. The instrumentation of this research was a test. From 915 items analysed, the research found that second-year students’ ability in differentiating contrast adverbial clause at English Department of UNP was adequate. It was also found that the mistakes done by the students in using conjunction were 31.26%. This finding indicated that the second-year students at English Department of UNP less understand about contrast adverbial clause.

Abstract

Writing is an important skill that is needed in order to share  and convey ideas into written form. As a writer, the students should be able to give their thoughts through writing. However, many students have difficulties in writing the text and they do not know how to generate adn develope their ideas. It is because they are confused to develope their ideas into a paragraph. That is why this paper is conducted on order to explain how to use Story Pyramid Strategy in teaching writing narrative to senior high schools students. Story pyramid is pre-writing activity that is done before writing. It is an outline that contains some instructions to describe the important information from a story such as the main character, the setting and the major events in the plot. It means that this strategy assists students to produce and arrange the ideas clearly before they start writing. it believed that this strategy can help many students in improving their writing ability.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the students’ ability in using transition signals. This research used descriptive qualitative. The population of this research was the second year students of English Department of Padang State University, Faculty of Languages and arts, who registered on 2011. This research sample is K2 (Educational Class) which is 25 students. Samples were taken using cluster sampling technique. Data were collected using written test. Based on data obtained, the students’ ability in using transition signals is average (60%) Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendiskripsikan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menggunakan transisi. Penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kualitatif. Populasi penelitian adalah mahasiswa tingkat II Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris tahun masuk 2011, Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni, Universitas Negeri Padang. Sampel penelitian adalah K2 (Kelas Kependidikan) yang berjumlah 29 orang. Sampel diambil dengan menggunakan teknik cluster sampling. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan tes tertulis. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh, hasil kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menggunakan sinyal transisi adalah sedang (60%). Keywords: ability, transitions.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to discuss how to apply Front Loading Vocabulary in helping students to improve reading comprehension at Senior High School students. Front Loading Vocabulary is a strategy where students are introduced to the vocabulary related to the text or passage before going to comprehend the texts. In Front Loading Vocabulary students were given time to explore vocabulary before reading the whole information related to the text. In this activity students discuss the vocabulary in group. Teacher provides students with a worksheet contain words that students going to discuss, synonim, antonym and part of speech of the words and at the end, students will find the meaning of that words. There were three major advantages of implementing Front Loading Vocabulary in reading comprehension: 1). Facilitate students to comprehend the texts, 2). Prepare students before going to reading, 3). Improving student’s vocabulary. By using this strategy students will be able to comprehend the new materials which are unfamiliar for them. In addition, teachers also find the ways to help students in comprehend the texts or passages. The process of writing this paper was based on the limitation of vocabulary and student’s background knowledge in comprehending the text. Thus, by implementing Front Loading Vocabulary, the problem can be solved. Key words: Front Loading Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the students’ difficult skills in answering reading section of TOEFL. The participants of this study were 26 students at English department in 2016 academic years. This study used proportional stratified sampling to choose the sample. The instrument used in this research was reading TOEFL test. The test consisted 50 questions multiple choice with 55 minutes. The study found that the last year English students of Universitas Negeri Padang had problems in 13 skills among 5 topics assessed. There were five most difficult items; main idea questions, stated detail questions, transition questions, context to determine meaning of simple words, and determine the tone of the passage.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the motivation of the English Education 2016 Universitas Negeri Padang in reading academic articles and factors influenced their motivation. This research was done through descriptive qualitative method with 84 populations. The samples of this study were 84 students chosen by using total sampling techniques. The data were collected through a questionnaire adapted from Reading Motivation Questionnaire by Wigfield and Guthrie (1997). The findings of this research indicate that: (1) English Education 2016 students have high motivation because 66 students are in 2,51 – 3,25 mean range. It means that half of the samples are at high level motivation to read academic articles and there are only 6 samples that have low level motivation in reading academic articles (the mean score is 1,76 - 2,50). Moreover, 12 students have very high motivation in reading academic articles (the mean score is in 3,26 - 4,00 range); (2) factors that influenced the motivation of English Education 2016 students’ in reading academic articles are dominated by intrinsic factors.
