Abstract

Rafflesia zollingeriana Koorders is a protected, rare, and endemic plants to Meru Betiri National Park.  However, its population was declined.  So, the study was focused on the analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of conservation of R. zollingeriana to recommend some conservation's strategy and programs. This study was conducted at Meru Betiri National Park and its surrounding 5 villages. Data were collected by interviews, survey, observations, and literature studies. Qualitative data was analyzed by reduction, presentation and drawing conclusions simultaneously, while the quantitative data was analyzed descriptively. Matrix for SWOT analysis was processed by SPSS 16. The result showed that there were 4 elements that identified as strength, 5 elements that identified as weakness, 5 elements that identified as opportunity and 4 elements that identified as threat. The internal factor's value was higher than the external factor. The result of the SWOT analysis indicated that it needs aggresive strategy through collaboration among stakeholders to optimize both strength and opportunites. While the recommended program are: socialization the importance of R. zollingeriana conservation and developing a collaborative R. zollingeriana ecotourism.

Abstract

Pasak bumi (Eurycoma longifolia Jack) is one of non timber forest products with “indeterminate” conservation status and commercially traded in West Kalimantan. The research objective was to determine the potential of pasak bumi root per hectare and its ecological condition under natural habitat. Root weight of E. longifolia Jack was estimated using simple linear regression and exponential equation with stem diameter and height as independent variables. The results showed that the individual number of the population was 114 with the majority in seedling stage with 71 individuals (62.28%). The distribution was found in clumped pattern. Conditions of the habitat could be described as follows: daily average temperature of 25.6oC, daily average relative humidity of 73.6%, light intensity of 0.9 klx, and red-yellow podsolic soil with texture ranged from clay to sandy clay. The selected estimator model for E. longifolia Jack root weight used exponential equation with stem height as independent variable using the equation of Y= 21.99T0,010 and determination coefficient of 0.97. After height variable was added, the potential of E. longifolia Jack minimum root weight that could be harvested per hectare was 0.33 kg.

Abstract

Ruteng Mountains in Indonesia are inhabited by people from the tribe Manggarai. Local culture of Manggarai community has a role to conservation and it needs to be integrated in the conservation of natural resources. Where conservation is defined as the management of the sustainable use of natural resources, the integration of local culture into conservation will open up a space of the emergence of the creativity and innovation in solving problems of forest conservation. This study aims to explore and describe to what extent the culture of Manggarai contributes to conservation activities in the protected areas and the possibility of the culture to be integrated within conservation policy. The study employs a qualitative research through ethnographic approach. The qualitative data in 2014 was obtained through field observation, interviews, data from relevant agencies, and related literature. The study shows that the Manggarai community has practiced conservation values, norms, and tradition since hereditary.  Manggarai culture related to conservation could be integrated into the activities of the protection, preservation, and sustainable use of natural resources.

Abstract

Kerinci community is one of the Indonesian indigenous people who live in Kerinci regency, Jambi Province. They have the local knowledge of the surrounding vegetation that has become a cultural unity with community. This study were aimed at analyzed the significance of culture plants and reviewing efforts to conserve plants based on cultural values in relation to Kerinci cultural. The study was conducted  at three locations  purposively,  they are Lempur Baru Village, Lama Tamiai Village and Ulu Jernih Village for eight months from October 2013 to May 2014. Data   was obtained by participatory observation approach, depth interview while the assessment of plant deployment society approach by point of view. The research data consist of data botany, plant utilization   and   assessment  plant deployment  while data analysis  using the formula Index of Cultural  Significance  (ICS)  adopted  from Turner.  The study shows  that the rice (Oryza sativa L) and cinnamon (Cinnamomun  burmanii Ness Ex.BI)) is a plant species that have important cultural value of 59 and 57 while  inggu  species  (Ruta  angustifolia (L). Pers) and onion  timber (Allium fistudosum Linn) has the lowest ICS, respectively 3. The Stimulus Tri Amar-Conservation analysis result that index of cultural significance (ICS) and kind of conservation by community has a range relationship.

Abstract

Rattan is the most important non-forest timber product utilized by communities adjacent Lore Lindu National Park (LLNP). The establishment community conservation agreement (CCA) in 2001 was unable to prevent rattan depletion. Then, a local institution called community conservation partnership (CCP) has been recently proposed. Therefore, the objective of this study is to explore how to craft a local institution of CCP for sustainable rattan governance in LLNP using Social-Ecological Systems (SES) Framework. The study was conducted in LLNP area and Ngata Toro, a buffer zone village of LLNP. We conducted rattan inventory and collected social data by interview for analyzing CCP development using SES framework. The results showed that CCP is most likely to be successful in implementing due to several reasons. Firstly, the establishment of constitutional-choice rules made clear the nested enterprise. Secondly, the reallocation of CCP location to the traditional zone increase the boundary clarity. Thirdly, transferring rights to the Ngata Toro community will make effective co-management, increase the legitimacy of rattan utilization, decrease potential conflicts among resource unit users and reducing monitoring cost. Finally, deciding the rattan harvesting quota will ensure the rattan ecological and livelihood sustainability. With the clarity of system boundaries and property rights, we argue that CCP institutions will bring many benefits in many ways. Overall, most variables of SES framework can be used to analyses the readiness of CCP institutional arrangement for sustainable rattan management in LLNP.

Abstract

Sugar palm (Arenga pinnata Merr.) is one kind of palm that has multiple benefits on the Sasak community of Kekait Village. Despite its benefit, the information of sugar palm is barely unknown since the farmers depend on the nature cultivation. The Research aimed to analyze ecological aspects: composition, structure, the vegetation distribution, which includes the rate of regeneration and spatial distribution of sugar palm in the Sasak community garden in Kekait Village, West Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province. The methods employed in the research is a single plot method with randomly selected. Obtained data are being analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The research successfully identified 68 species of 30 families plant. The majority of species are Meliaceae and Anacardiaceae families. The highest IVI from seedlings, saplings, poles, and trees are A. pinnata (52.09%), T. cacao (22.72%), G. gnemon (91.49%), D. zibethinus (80.19%). The vegetation structures showed a well-developed structure. The vegetation distribution in the farmers' garden indicated a clustered pattern within three strata; B, C, and D strata. The regeneration level of A. pinnata categorized as fair sustainable with a clustered distribution pattern. The pattern is affected by the reproduction and distribution of A. pinnata seeds which carried out by Rinjani weasel (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus rinjanicus).
