Abstract

The elderly population has increased alongside with the increasing of life expectancy in elderly. Unfortunately, this is not followed by increased quality of life among elderly. Interview with 10 elderly at the Public Health Center III South Denpasar revealed that they experienced loneliness and felt neglected which affect their quality of life. This study aims to determine the relationship between family functioning, social supports (friends, family and community) and quality of life of elderly at the Public Health Center III South Denpasar in 2013. This study is a cross-sectional, involving 125 elderly who still have a partner and was selected using systematic random sampling method. Agreed participants were interviewed to obtain data related to family function, social support (partner, family and community) as well as their quality of life. Data were analysed using univariate, bivariate and multivariate. Statistical testing used were chi-square test and logistic regression. The study revealed that most of the elderly has a low quality of life (62.4%), a low family functioning (72%), lack of family support (54.4%) and lack of community support (67.2%); however, most of them has a high support from their partner (54.4%). The chi square test result showed that function of family, social support (friends, family, and community) were significantly associated with quality of life in elderly (p<0.05). Results of logistic regression showed that function of family has a significant relation with quality of life in elderly (p<0.05). It can be concluded that better family functioning improves the quality of life in elderly.

Abstract

Background and purpose: Customer satisfaction is a primary indicator of the quality of public healthcare services. This study investigated internal (hospital staff) and external (hospital clients) perspectives in order to gain insight into the quality of care at Sanglah General Hospital. Methods: The study used both qualitative and quantitative methodologies with 11 informants and 106 respondents. Qualitative data obtained through in-depth interviews with hospital staff were analyzed thematically. Quantitative data obtained through self-administered questionnaire were analyzed using univariate analysis. Results: Informants from the qualitative data collection stated that Sanglah General Hospital has a relatively high level of service and that existing structures to mitigate issues are in place, which act as reinforcing factors. Data from the quantitative survey indicated that clients were satisfied with the quality of service (ServQual), with an overall percentage of 83.82%. Conclusion: Further efforts could be made in order to improve healthcare provision at Sanglah Hospital, particularly from the perspective of hospital facilities, staff support and increased implementation of clinical governance.

Abstract

Background and purpose: Aging is known to cause cognitive impairment and body imbalance. Studies have found that physical exercise helps to delay such depreciation. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between participation in physical fitness and cognitive function and body balance among the elderly in Denpasar. Methods: Study was cross sectional, involving 60 elderly who were categorised into those who participated in physical exercise and those who did not, using proportional stratified random sampling. MoCa-Ina was used to determine the level of cognitive function and Romberg Test was applied to determine body balance. Data were analysed using chi-square and logistic regression tests. Results: The proportion of normal cognitive function among elderly who did and did not participate in physical fitness were 80% and 20%, respectively. Similarly, proportions of normal body balance among the elderly who did and did not participate in physical fitness were 86.7% and 20.0% respectively. These differences were statistically significant. In logistic regression analysis, it was shown that the variables affecting cognitive function were participation in physical fitness and in a hobby, and variables that affected body balance were participation in physical fitness and disease history. Conclusion: Participation in physical fitness was associated with cognitive function and body balance among elderly.
