This study aims to determine the effect of temperature on the hydration reaction of α-pinene into α-terpineol in heterogeneous systems with activated natural zeolite catalysts and to determine the activation energy of the reaction that occurs. The study begins with the activation of natural zeolite as a catalyst, characterization and applications of zeolite catalysts in the hydration reaction of α-pinene from turpentine oil into α-terpineol at temperature of 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80°C. Catalyst characterization includes the determination of the surface area, pore volume, and average pore by using NOVA Gas Analyzer 1200E sorption with BET method. The best result of hydration reaction with activated natural zeolite catalysts were analyzed by using IR spectrophotometer, Gas Chromatography (GC) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). IR analysis results indicated the presence of OH group absorption at wave number 3400 cm-1, CH aliphatic at wave number 2987,09 cm-1, group C=C at wave number 1635,64 cm-1, the CO group at wave number 1126.43 cm-1. The main conclusion of this study is the rise in temperature associated with the conversion (%) α-pinene into α-terpineol. The best results obtained at a reaction temperature of 70°C with 68.53% in level and the activation energy on the hydration reaction of α-pinene is 69,6546 kJmol-1.
