Abstract

AbstractThis paper was aimed at finding out to what extent comic strips can improve the ability of the second year students of SMA Negeri 5 Pekanbaru in writing narrative texts. The participants of this research were 36 students of the second year students of SMA Negeri 5 Pekanbaru. This research was conducted in 2 cycles. The data collection technique were obtained through (1)observation sheet which was applied to know the students’ activities during teaching and learning process, (2) test was done to measures students’ achievement, and (3) field note was done to obtain information about teacher, the students’ activities and performance during the implementation of comic strips. The research findings can be briefly explained as follows; firstly, the students’ ability in writing narrative texts could be improved by using comic strips. Before the research was done, the mean score of students’ pre-test was 60.4. After the research has done for cycle 1, the mean score of students’ writing was 68.1. In post test 2 mean score of students’ writing increased up to 78.4. Secondly, the students’ activeness increased from cycle 1 to cycle 2. Finally, the students enjoyed to write narrative text and develop their writing.Keyword : Comic Strips, Writing, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract : The objective of this research was to find out the effect by using PQ4R Strategy in teaching reading. PQ4R Strategy is one of the strategies proposed to be a good strategy in improving the students’ reading comprehension. PQ4R consists of a six-step process involves previewing, questioning, reading, reflecting, reciting & reviewing. This research is an experimental research focused on quantitative approach. There are two variables: Independent and dependent variable. The independent variable is using PQ4R strategy and dependent variable is the students’ reading comprehension. The population of this research was the second year students of SMPN 11 Pekanbaru and the writer choose 8.6. They were 40 students. The writer used reading comprehension test items inform of multiple choice as the instrument for the measurement of comprehension achieved by the students after applying PQ4R Strategy. The obtained data were analyzed by using SPSS version 16.0. The result of the data showed that from 40 students. It was found out that in PQ4R Strategy there are 34 srudents (85%) who belong to the excellent category and 6 students (15%) who belong good category. In other words, the researcher can said that the Reading Comprehension of second year students of SMPN 11 Pekanbaru was in Excellent Category.Key words : Testing, Reading Comprehension, PQ4R Strategy

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed at developing English instructional tools (lesson plan and students’ worksheet) by applying inquiry-based learning as one of the learning model suggested in the 2013 curriculum and to find out the validity level of developing English lesson plan and students’ worksheet by applying inquiry-based learning in teaching recount texts for the first year students of SMA. This research is a developmental research using 4-D Model by Thiagarajan (1974). To develop lesson plan and students’, there were three stages involve in this research, (a) define stage which is done to collecting various information relating to the product to be developed., (b) design stage which is done to plan the draft of instructional tools and arranged it into the right format and (c) develop stage which is done to validate and try-out the instructional tools. In order to find out the validity level of developing instructional tools, the data were collected using validation sheet of lesson plan, validation sheet of students’ worksheet validated by experts and students response questionnaire. Based on data analysis result, the validation score of lesson plan is 95,14% and the validation score of students’ worksheet is 93,56% and the average score of students’ response is 96,36%. The result showed that the instructional tools in the form of lesson plan and students’ worksheet were very valid and can be implemented for the first year students of SMA.Key Words: Developing, Lesson Plan, Students’ Worksheet, Inquiry-Based Learning, Recount Texts

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research aimed to know the effectiveness of “find the difference” game on speaking ability of the second year students of SMP Babussalam Pekanbaru. This research was conducted toward the second year students of SMP Babussalam Pekanbaru from October to November 2015. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to determine the sample. The sample was class VIII.4 which consisted of 23 students. The data was collected by giving a pre-test and a post-test to students in the form of picture describing. The data was assessed by three raters and analyzed by using SPSS 18. The result of the reserch showed the different score in the pre-test and the post-test was 27.42. The score of the pre-test was 45.62 and the score of the post test increased to 73.04. Moreover, from statistical analysis, it was found out that the t-test 23.320 was bigger than t-table 2.074 at level significance of 0.05. It means that there was a significant effect of “Find the Difference” game on the students’ speaking ability. Therefore, it can be concluded that applying “Find the Difference” game is effective to improve students’ speaking ability.Keywords:”Find the Difference” game, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to develop English learning documents (lesson plan and students’ worksheet) based on discovery learning as one of learning models suggested in the 2013 Curriculum and to find out the validity level of developing English learning documents based on discovery learning in teaching descriptive text for the first year students of SMP. The research design is Research & Development (R&D) applied 4D model by Thiagarajan (1974). To develop English learning documents, there were three stages involve in this research, (a) define stage that is done to set and define the product development requirements, (b) design stage that is done to plan the draft of learning documents and arranged it into the format and (c) develop stage that is done to modify and validate the learning documents. In order to find out the validity level of developing English learning documents, the data were collected using validation sheet of lesson plan and validation sheet of students’ worksheet validated by experts. Based on data analysis result, the validation score of lesson plan is 90.91% and the validation score of students’ worksheet is 89.37%. The result showed that the learning documents in the form of lesson plan and students’ worksheet were very valid and can be implemented in a classroom.Key words: Research and Development (R&D), Lesson plan (LP), Students’ Worksheet (SW),Discovery Learning, Descriptive Text.

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research is to find out the correlation between reading comprehension and writing ability on descriptive texts of the second year students of SMA 2 Batam. The sample of this research was class XI IPA, which consist of 30 students. The data were collected by using two kinds of test, reading comprehension test and writing test. The result of this research showed that the second year students of SMAN 2 Batam got good level with the average score of 74.06 in reading comprehension and in writing test, the students got adequate level with average score 68.43. The result of this research proved that there is a positive correlation between reading comprehension and writing ability on descriptive texts. The rxy distribution of the coefficient correlation is 0.69. It means that the correlation was in moderate level. So, Ha (alternative hypothesis) of this research is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. In other words, it can be concluded that this correlation cannot prove that students who are good in reading will also have the same ability in writing. This can be seen on the students’ score of reading and writing. There are some students who got good scores in reading test, but got bad scores in writing. There is a tendency where the students’ reading score was in accordance with their writing score and vice versa. Key Words: Correlation, Reading Comprehension, Writing Ability

Abstract

Abstract : This descriptive research was aimed to find out the ability of the first year students of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru in using Present Perfect Tense. The research data were collected in July 2016. The subject of this research was class X IPS 1 which consisted of 39 students. The data were collected by giving test to the students in the form of words arrangement and completion of blank spaces in passage. The results of the research showed that the first year students of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru in the use of have/has got the mean score of 67, the use of irregular verb got the mean score of 47.94 and the use of regular verb got the mean score of 53.5. Therefore, it can be concluded that the highest ability of the first year students of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru in using Present Perfect Tense was in the use of have/has.Keywords: Ability, Present Perfect Tense

Abstract

Abstract: The research was aimed to develop and to find out the validity level of English instructional tools (lesson plan and students’ worksheet) by using Picture series as one of learning media which is done through some steps: BKOF (Building Knowledge of Field), MOT (Modeling of the Text), JCOT (Joint Construction of Text), ICOT (Independent Construction of Text) suggested in the 2013 Curriculum. Based on data analysis, the validation score of lesson plan is 91,61% and the validation score of students’ worksheet is 92,01%. Those results showed that the instructional tools as a media in the form of lesson plan and students’ worksheet were very valid. Abstract

Abstract: This classroom action research was aimed to find out if the Directed Reading Thinking Activitystrategy could improve the students’ ability in comprehending narrative texts of the second year students of SMAN5 Pekanbaru. The class XI IPA 7 became the subject of the research, the participants were 39.The data were collected by using of tests, observations, and field notes. The data were analyzed byquantitative data and qualitative data. The research finding showed that the implementation of Directed Reading Thinking Activitystrategy as the teaching strategy could improve students’ ability in comprehending narrative texts both at the first cycle and second cycle.It was also proved that applying the procedures of Directed Reading Thinking Activitystrategy in teaching reading could raise students’ predictions, before reading, during and after reading in comprehendings narrative text, and motivation to shared with their friends in groups.Keywords: Directed Reading Thinking Activity Strategy, Students’ Reading Ability, Comprehending Narrative Text
