Abstract

The discourse of ritual may be one of the clearest and most fundamental mani- festations of language in its ecological setting. It simultaneously manifests and re- creates the three dynamic systems of sociality—communication, culture, and com- munity. In this paper we examine the language in betungkal, a traditional anoint- ing ceremony of West Kalimantan. The language is characterized by complex pat- terning, showing by both constant repetition and variation, and thus demonstrates the fundamental processes of predictability and creativity by which every form of linguistic communication operates. It is a paradigmatic example of how language is taught and reinforced, from discourse as embedded in the environment, to a community’s members of whatever age. At the same time it inevitably teaches and reinforces the community’s identity and its cultural values and practices. Key words: ecological approach, anointing, ritual art, and betungkal.

Abstract

This study develops a supplementary material of Malay Tourism suitable for vocational tourism students (VTS) in Pontianak, Indonesia. The study focuses on the specific product phases consisting of analysis, design, development, and evaluation. The need analysis reveals that VTS need a particular material supporting tourism industry that can cover the skills of English and enhance their motivation and activities of learning English. Based on the design and development process, the product provides five units of learning materials namely introduction; cultural sites; festivals and attractions; arts and crafts; and transportation and accommodation that those parts are covering the content of Malay tourism and supporting facilitation. All of the components represent the findings of the analysis process. The product also provides appropriate pictures, instructional guides, maps, grammar guide, and words of wisdom in which packed in a travel guidebook. The evaluation is conducted to secure the suitability and the responses of the participants using the validator, the teacher and students questionnaire that this supplementary material meets the need for the tenth-year students at SMK Pariwisata CBK Pontianak. The evaluation also provides the feedback from the participants in the revision process.

Abstract

AbstractThis research is conducted to reveal the students’ interest in learning English. Moreover, this research reports the level of interest of the students in learning English. The participants (n=77) were  the third semester students of Indonesian Language Study Program Tanjungpura university. This study used Students’ Interest Questionnaire adapted from Yu (2010) as an inventary to explore the level of students’ interest in learning English. The method that was used in conducting this research was descriptive method. The result revealed that most of the  participants had the high interest in learning English which is out of the 77 participants, there were 40 (52%) students are labeled as the high interest students. 29 (38%) of the students are labeled as very high interest students. The remain 8 (10%) students are labeled as a medium interest students. Among the eight aspects of the interest in learning English, Language Value was the most dominat aspect of the interest in learning English of the students with the percentage of 15%. The overall result suggests that students of Indonesian Language Study Program Tanjungpura University have significant tendency in learning English. Keyword : Students’ Interest, Learning English

Abstract

Abstract                                                          This research aimed to investigate how high the correlation of Extrovert-Introvert personality towards speaking performance of the 2018 academic year students of Speaking for Academic Presentation class of  English Education Study Program in Teacher Training and Education University of Tanjungpura. The sample of this research was 20 students of Speaking for Academic class which consists of 20 females and 5 males in the class. The measurement of personality and speaking performance were determined by using Mark Parkinson Personality Questionnaire (MSQ) and Monroe’s motivated persuasive rubric score. The students’ personality and speaking score were correlated by using Pearson Product Moment and Multiple Correlation formula. The result of this research show the correlation between extrovert-introvert personality in speaking performance is 0.5206 that indicate moderate correlation between these variables. The result for the sub-correlation between extrovert and speaking performance is 0.4183, introvert and speaking performance is 0.4096 which both also shows moderate correlation. From this research, the researcher had conclusion that extrovert-introvert personality has the effect to the speaking performance.Keywords: Extrovert Personality, Introvert Personality, Speaking Performance

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research is to improve students’ vocabulary, especially in meaning and spelling of vocabularies. This research was conducted on the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Pontianak in academic year 2014/2015. In this research, the subject is class VII E that consists of 30 students. The researcher conducted a classroom action research in her research and acted as the teacher during the research period. The data were collected by using direct and measurement technique. The tools of data collecting were observation checklist, field note, and test. Riddle game was used as the technique in this research which is conducted the research in two cycles. The research findings showed that the mean score of students’ vocabulary test in the first cycle is 59.83 to 76.20 in the second cycle which means it successffully passed the KKM. It can be concluded that the students’ vocabulary taught by using riddle game was improved. Penelitian ini telah dilakukan terhadap siswa kelas VII SMP N 8 Pontianak pada tahun akademik 2014/2015. Dalam penelitian ini sasaran penelitiannya adalah siswa kelas VII E yang terdiri dari 30 orang siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian tindakan kelas dan berperan sebagai guru selama masa penelitia berlangsung. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan tehnik penilaian dan observasi langsung dengan menggunakan tabel pemeriksaan, catatan lapangan, dan tes. Tehnik yang digunakan adalah riddle game dan dilaksanakan dalam 2 siklus. Hasil penelitian menunjukan skor rata-rata tes siswa pada siklus pertama adalah 59,83 menjadi 76,20 pada siklus kedua yang berarti siswa dapat melewati standar KKM. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa pemahaman siswa terhadap kosakata, khususnya pada arti dan pengejaan kata dapat meningkat melalui pengajaran menggunakan riddle game.   Keywords: Kosakata, Permainan, Riddle Game

Abstract

AbstractThe aim of this research is to improve students’ speaking ability, especially in fluency and accuracy. This research was conducted at the eight grade students of SMPN 3 Pontianak in academic year 2017/2018. In this research, the subject is class VIIIF that consists of 38 students. The researcher conducted a classroom action research. The data were collected by observation and measurement technique. The tools of data collecting were observation checklist, field note, and scoring rubric for assessing speaking (performance test). Guessing game was used as the technique in this research which was conducted in two cycles. The research findings showed that the mean score of students’ speaking test improved from 1.68 for accuracy and 1.84 for fluency in the first cycle to 2.13 for accuracy and 2.26 for fluency in the second cycle. The improvements of this study were particularly in students’ speaking aspect, especially accuracy and fluency. Keywords: Speaking, accuracy and fluency, guessing game.

Abstract

AbstractMotivation plays an important role to the success of the students’ learning. Each individual who has motivation will drive directly to achieve his goal to facilitate himself. Motivation needed to reach a successful of English learning achievement. This research has porposes to find out how high the students’ motivation and students’ English learning achievement, how strong the correlation between students’ motivation and English learning achievement and investigate the most dominant factor influencing students’ low English learning achievement. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students of MAS Hidayatul Muslimin 2 Sungai Raya. They were 20 students as the samples from 34 were students. The method of this research was conducted correlational study. The data collected from the questionnaire and documentary. From the reserach finding, the data analysis showed that the students’ motivation was clarified moderate qualification with mean score 50.2% and the students’ English achievement was categorized poor with mean score 38.6. The correlation between students’ motivation and English learning achievement is categorized low with r = 0.34 and the contribution of motivation on English learning achievement was 34%. It was low impact to contribute the students’ English learning achievement, it might be caused by other factor. Last, the most dominant factor influencing students’ low English learning achievement was clarified students’ attitude. Students have negative attitude toward English subject. Most of them did not pay good attention while the learning teaching process in the classroom and the school also was lack of media and facilities to support them in learning English. Keyword: Correlational Study, Students’ Motivation, English Learning Achievement

Abstract

  Abstract: The aim of this research is to explore an extracurricular activity for English subject in  a school which is called with English Club. Besides, the writer also wanted to know the contribution of the English club on the students' English learning. Therefore, the writer used a descriptive method in this research. After conducting the research, the writer found a lot of information about the English club. In the English club, it is not a compulsory for the students to join the English club. In other word, the students are free whether they want to join the English club or not. Then, in the English club, the students do any activities that can promote their English learning. And, the average scores of the students who join the English club is higher than the students who do not join the English club.   Keywords: English Club, Trainer, Students Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mencari tau sebuah kegiatan ekstrakurrikuler untuk mata pelajaran bahasa inggris di sekolah yang di sebut dengan English club. Selain itu, penulis juga ingin mengetahui kontribusi dari English club tersebut pada pembelajaran bahasa Inggris siswa. Oleh karna itu, penulis menggunakan metode deskriptif di dalam penelitian ini. Setelah menyelenggarakan penelitian nya. penulis menemukan banyak informasi tentang English club. Di dalam English club, bukan merupakan kewajiban bagi siswa untuk bergabung dengan nya. Dengan kata lain, para siswa bebas untuk bergabung atau tidak. Kemudian, di dalam English club, para siswa melakukan berbagai kegiatan yang bisa mempromosikan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris mereka. Abstract

Abstract This research investigated Teaching Writing Procedure Text through Demonstration Technique and finding the effect size of the treatment through Demonstration to the tenth grade students of SMA IBM Pontianak. The form of this research was a pre-experimental study with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population was the tenth grade students of SMA IBM Pontianak, while the sample was class X which consists of 20 students. The technique used in data collection was measurement technique and the tool for the data collection was a test in form of written test. The research finding showed that the mean score of pre-test was 34.70 while the mean score of post-test was 62.5. The result of t-test was 27.8. It was higher than t-critical at a0,05 (7.35>1.729). As a result, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. The calculation of the effect size of the treatments was 1.61 which was categorized as high since 0.2  ES (1.61>0.8).It can be concluded that there was a moderate significant effect from Teaching Writing Procedure Text through Demonstration Technique to the tenth grade students of SMA IBM Pontianak. Keywords: Teaching Writing, Procedure Text, Demonstration Technique.

Abstract

Abstract : The purpose of this research was to find out the effectiveness of the use of Hyponymy in Teaching Vocabulary. This research was done using a pre-experimental method with intact-group comparison design. In this research, the population of the research was divided into two groups; experimental group and control group. The tool of data collecting was written test. The students were asked to answer 30 questions of multiple choise. From the data analysis, it was found that Hyponymy significantly improved students’ vocabulary achievement. It can be seen from the difference of the mean score of experimental group (76.96) and control group (48.62). Furthermore, the effect of the use of Hyponymy was strong in teaching vocabulary since the effect size is 1.83 (> 1.00) or categorized as strong effect. In conclusion, the use of Hyponymy is effective in teaching vocabulary to the eighth grade students of MTs Aswaja Pontianak in academic year 2014/2015. Metode yang digunakan adalah Perbandingan Intact-Group yang merupakan salah satu dari jenis metode Pre-Experimental dimana terdapat grup eksperimen dan grup kontrol. Alat pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah tes tertulis yang berupa 30 soal pilihan ganda. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh, secara signifikan Hiponimi dapat meningkatkan pencapaian kosa kata siswa. Hal ini terbukti dari perbedaan nilai rata-rata grup eksperimen (76.96) dan grup kontrol(48.62). Begitu pula nilai besarnya efek dari penggunaan Hiponimi yaitu 1.83 (> 1.00) atau masuk dalam kategori memiliki efek yang kuat. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa Penggunaan Hiponimi dapat menjadi teknik yang efektif dalam Pengajaran Kosa Kata untuk siswa kelas delapan di MTs Aswaja Pontianak pada tahun ajaran 2014/2015.
