Abstract

EFL students many times made mistakes in using the English expressions and led to misinterpretations or even acceptable message of their utterances. This is due to their lack of cultural awareness or their understanding towards L2 culture. Therefore, EFL teachers should think of how to give position to the L1 and L2 culture in their teaching and learning process of EFL instructions. To solve the problems, there are some approaches used to introduce the target language culture, by knowing the obstacles that the learners frequently made. Keywords: EFL; Cultural Awareness; Approaches; Obstacles

Abstract

This paper explores the distinctive features of the standard Javanese causatives in on-line editorials and short stories. This research is based on written corpus. This written corpus was compiled from articles published in an online newspaper Solo Pos. To analyze the corpus, I have developed a system of manual annotation to identify the features of verb transitivity, the animacy and humanness of the verb, the presence of active, passive and ergative-like clauses and the number of other grammatical and semantic features using a system of tags. Using this annotation, I analyze the data based on dua anlaysis: genre analysis, functional analysis using a quantitative method. The findings show that genre influences the selection of causative types (markers). Also, there exists gawe used as a verb of causation in both editorials and short stories which contradicts to the canonical rule of the Javanese active verb and Malihah’s (2014) findings. The finding also shows that the standard Javanese causative in online editorials and short stories occurs with intransitive verbs. The last finding is that active clause is the relative prominent type of clause which occurs in all marker. In conclusion, the above findings have made contributions to knowledge to Javanese grammar. Keywords:  Javanese; causatives;  causation types; genre

Abstract

Speaking is a crucial part of second language learning and teaching. Teaching speaking is not merely to let students to repeat or memorize dialogues, but they should be able to use the utterance to communicate in the real situations. Teachers’ attitudes to respond the students thought and opinion is important, as they should not be forced to speak and putthem in the deep anxiety, but we invite the learners to use any languages in the performance of oral tasks where teachers give a task and learners complete the task. Teachers should be able to create such situations where students hold meaningful tasks that will promote their speaking proficiency. This can be realized when students works with their friends in groups to complete a task. Task-Based approach is the alternate to solve the problem where learning is developed through performing a series of activities as steps towards successful task realization.Key words: Language learning and teaching; speaking instruction; taskbasedapproach

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the process of parental guidance and assistance for the Islamic Elementary School (Madrasah Ibtidaiyah or MI) students during the covid-19 pandemic and the benefits of parental guidance and assistance while learning at home. This research is descriptive qualitative in nature. The data were collected through observation, interview and documentation. The results of this study indicate that: 1) parental guidance and assistance is needed in online learning which is carried out by utilizing technology using networks because it is carried out online from their respective homes. Parents (family) are the first place where children get education. In connection with distance learning, the task of people increases as a substitute for teachers at home to provide online guidance, supervision, and direction for student learning. The success of children's education cannot be separated from the role of parents as the first teachers to introduce education. 2) parental guidance and assistance for students in online learning has a positive impact for both the parents themselves and the students. Parents become more aware of students' learning progress directly, become more patient, and also gain knowledge because they can learn together with their children. For students, they know more about their responsibilities as students, namely learning, completing assignments from the teachers and being more active in learning.

Abstract

This study aims to formulate the concept of strategic management in overcoming radicalism through deradicalization based on Islamic education. Direct observations were made to map the strategic management used by each Islamic university in the deradicalization process. In addition, Focus Group Discussions were also held during the data collection process in order to dig deeper into the policies of the managers and to confirm what researchers found on direct observation of lecturers related to the implementation of deradicalization. In addition, to support these results, semi-structured interviews were conducted with student representatives from each Islamic university to highlight their perspectives on realizing deradicalization through Islamic education. The results showed that, (1). Deradicalization in Islamic universities can be done by formulating an inclusive-multicultural Islamic education curriculum; (2) training educators (teachers) with an inclusive-multicultural paradigm who are full of creativity in the management of unique and interesting learning with different emphases and high tolerance, multicultural and humanistic values and become ambassadors of anti-radicalism education in the social field to lead the media; (3) evaluate the deradicalization of inclusive multicultural Islamic education directed at the right goals.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the implementation of the MBKM (Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka, Independent Learning-Independent Campus)’ Model of the connected curriculum in the Arabic Language departments through an online survey. This research is qualitative in nature by inviting responses from 9 heads of Arabic language departments. The results of this survey show that those Arabic Language departments respond to the MBKM ‘connected curriculum’ model positively, among others, by holding seminars, focus group discussions, and any events on the term of MBKM, and curriculum reviews to adopt the MBKM design. It is also found that there are still a few Arabic language departments that have already implemented the MBKM due to the necessary preparation process. This research reveals several designs those nine departments built, for example, the MBKM design with a limited 20 credits outside the department, a full MBKM of 40 credits outside the department, and 60 credits outside the department, while in terms of the implementation, there was a pattern of MBKM outside the department within the same institution and the department at another institution or university. These various designs show that MBKM provides institutions to adjust their curriculum design to meet their needs by considering the rules of MBKM offered by the government.
