Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of the addition of fermented moringa leaf powder on feed consumption, egg weight, Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) of laying ducks. 60 laying ducks were randomized into four treatments i.e. (P0) 0% Moringa leaf powder fermentation, (P1) 0.5% Moringa leaf powder fermentation, (P2) 1% Moringa leaf powder fermentation, and (P3) 1.5% Moringa leaf fermentation. Treatment of concentration refered in 100% commercial feed for 3 weeks. The results showed that the adding of Moringa leaf powder fermentation to feed consumption in each treatment showed significantly different results (p <0.05) in each treatment, with the highest consumption at P2 (176.21 ± 0.92) and the lowest at P0 (158.21 ± 1.07). The results of the study on duck egg weight showed that P1, P2, P3 were significantly different with P0. The highest egg weight in P2 is (70.50 ± 0.34) and the lowest is P0 (66.98a ± 0.29). FCR of laying duck in each treatment showed significantly different results in each treatment, with the highest at P0 (3,81± 0,34) and the lowest at P2 (3,27 ± 0,09). In conclusion, the addition of 1% Moringa leaf powder in 100% of commercial feed can increase feed consumption, increase egg weight and decrease FCR.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the duration of the process of spermatogenesis in adult Javan langurs (Trachypithecus auratus) by measuring levels of the hormone testosterone and luteinizing hormone (LH), as one of the efforts to increase the success of mating this endemic animals. Two Javan langurs aged 3-5-year-old, named Luki and Moses were taken their feces for 30 days. Feces extraction process used PBS with a ratio of 1: 9, while the measurement of hormone levels used Monkey Luteinizing Hormone ELISA BT Lab brand with Cat.No E0052MK for LH and Cat No E0008MK for testosterone. Hormone consentration data was a graph with fluctuating patterns which are then analyzed descriptively. The results of this study were the concentration of the hormone testosterone is in the range of 4.81 ng / gram of feces to 15.08 ng / gram of feces. While LH level is in the range of 12.59 mIU/gram to 26.24 mIU/gram. In conclusion, we could estimated that the duration of the spermatogenesis cycle every month in langur Luki occurs for 14 days, while Langur Moses for 10 days.

Abstract

Patterns of growth can be determined one of them through quantitative measurements, namely osteometry. The aim of this study was to determine the growth of patterns of Lohmann broiler chickens based on hindlimb osteometry at the age of 7, 21 and 35 days. This study used 30 Lohmann broiler chickens aged 7, 21 and 35 days. Osteometry techniques are performed on all the bones of hindlimb with variable Greatest length (GL), Breadth of the proximal end (Bp), Breadth of the distal end (Dd), Minimum breadth of diaphysis (Sd), Circular of the proximal end (Cp), Circular of corpus (Cc), and Circular of distal end (Cd). The data obtained is recorded in units of centimeters (cm). Data of body weight and weight of each bone are also recorded in grams (g). Data were analyzed by ANOVA test, if the result obtained with a significance of 5% then the test continued with Pos Hoc Duncan. The results showed that from 6 osteometry variables, body weight, and bone mass obtained significant differences (p<0.05). The fastest growth rate is reached when Lohmann broiler chickens are 21 days old.

Abstract

Foodborne diseases are diseases transmitted through contaminated food and are one of the main public health problems. The bacteria that usually contaminates chicken meat is Escherichia coli. E. coli contamination in chicken meat can affect consumer health. Chicken meat processing and market conditions affect the level of bacteria contamination. This study aims to measure the contamination of E. coli bacteria in chicken meat in Surabaya's markets. The method which used to count and estimate the number of E. coli bacteria found in chicken meat in this study was Most Probable Number (MPN). The results showed 20 samples (33.3%) from 60 samples gave negative results. This indicated that only 20 samples of chicken meat were safe for consumption because the MPN value is <1 × 101 CFU/g while the remaining 40 samples (66.7%) were not safe for consumption because the MPN value is> 1 × 101 CFU/g. The standard of SNI 3924: 2009 concerning the minimum requirement for the amount of E. coli contamination in chicken meat is 1×101 CFU/g so that the contamination of E. coli which found in chicken meat in Surabaya was high.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the in vitro antibacterial activities of essential oil from cinnamon bark (Cinnamomum burmannii) on Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolated from raw milk. Essential oil from cinnamon bark obtained from the steam distillation method and essential oil was made in a series dilution with a concentration of 1%, 2%, 4%, and 8%. The antibacterial activities were tested using the disk diffusion method. Results showed from five isolates of MRSA, one isolate was sensitive of essential oil with a concentration 2% and all of the isolate was sensitive with a concentration 4% and 8%. The antibacterial activity showed by inhibition zones on  MRSA. The results suggest that the activity of the essential oils of cinnamon bark has an antibacterial effect on MRSA and it is developed as phytopharmaca.

Abstract

Bittern water is a byproduct of the crystallization process from the manufacture of salt which have high concentrations of magnesium, calcium, potassium and other trace minerals Bittern water is known to treat osteoporosis, postprandial hyperlipidemia, oral infections and increase salivary secretion. The mineral content in bittern water is not only beneficial for humans but also for animal health. Cows are one of the animals that are prone to various health problems such as mineral balance and metabolism disorders in the body, especially during pregnancy and after giving birth. In addition to minerals, vitamin B complex is often used to improve the health quality of cows. However, until now, the use of bittern water and the combination with vitamin B complex for animal treatment is still very rare. The formulation of multivitamin-mineral preparations is quite complex to do so that there are several things that need to be considered in order to obtain a good and quality formula. This review article was created to gather information regarding the benefits of the mineral content contained in bittern water and vitamin B complex as a treatment to treat various health problems for cattle, as well as what important factors should be considered in multivitamin-mineral preparations. Based on literature search, it was found that the combination of bittern water and vitamin B complex has the potential to overcome health problems in cows, where the main minerals in bittern water are proven to improve magnesium status in the blood, increase calcium intake and reduce the incidence of milk fever, increase milk production and components, and improve immune status. While vitamin B complex is widely used as a supplement to increase metabolism, energy status in cows balances rumen pH, maintains microbiota balance in riumen and helps increase milk production. The combination of bittern water and vitamin B complex can synergistically improve mineral status, energy, and immune response, as well as improve disease symptoms. There are also important factors that must be considered in multivitamin-mineral dosage formulations for animals, namely bioavailability, stability, and dosage form.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine in vitro inhibition test of lime peel liquid (Citrus aurantifolia, Swingle) against E. coli. The E. coli isolate was cultured on Muller Hinton Agar (MHA) media. Antibacterial test in this study using diffusion method. Negative control (K-) using CMC-Na 0.1%. Positive control (K+) using oxytetracycline antibiotics. The treatments were given lime peel liquid (Citrus aurantifolia, Swingle) with concentrations of 100%, 75%, 50% and 25%, respectively. The study design using Completely Randomized Design (CRD) method, with six treatments and four repetitions. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test, Moreover, the Post Hoc Mann-Whitney method. The inhibition zone analysis results were showed that K + had significant differences compared to all treatments K-, 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25%. K- was found to be significantly different from treatments 100%, 75%, 50% and 25%. The results showed that the lime peel liquid has the potential as an antibacterial activity against the growth of E. coli in vitro. Concentration of 25% has shown the presence of inhibitory zones on Mueller Hinton media that have been inoculated with lime peel liquid.

Abstract

Study on performance, semen quality and testosterone levels of 2 young bulls (age range 3-5 years) Limousine and Simental and 2 old bulls (age range 6-8 years) types Limousin and Simental have been carried out in the Teaching Farm, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Airlangga. This study aimed to determine the performance, semen quality and testosterone levels can be used as a guideline whether or not the ejaculate of young and old bulls should be continued into frozen semen. Performance tests were carried out using measuring sticks and weight bands, semen quality tests included macroscopic and microscopic tests, semen concentration using a spectrophotometer and testosterone test using the Sandwich-ELISA method. The mean results of the performance test in young bulls were, while the mean for older bulls were: body weight 700 kg; hump height 136.5 cm; circumferens of chest 213 cm; body length 171 cm and scrotal circumference 35.5 cm. The performance test for old bulls is body weight 840 kg; hump height 143 cm; circumferens of chest 225.5 cm; body length 177.5 cm and scrotal circumference 40.25 cm. Mean macroscopic of semen examination for young bulls, mean volume 8 cc; milky white color; characteristic odor; The degree of acidity was 6.5 and mucous consistency, while for the old bulls the volume was 6.85; milky white color; characteristic odor; 6.5 degrees of acidity and mucous consistency. The mean microscopic examination for young bulls was mass movement ++ / +++; individual movement 80/3; concentration 745.5 million / ml; abnormalities 3% and 92.25% viability, for old bulls: movement mass ++ / +++; individual movement 77.5 / 3; concentration 1291.5 millon / ml; abnormalities 5% and viability 90%. Examination of serum testosterone levels using the Sandwich-ELISA technique was obtained by an average of 1.299 ± 0.1598 ng/ml in young bulls and 1.101 ± 0.1502 ng/ml in older bulls. This study concluded that young bulls and old bulls in the Teaching Farm, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Airlangga in terms of performance, semen quality and testosterone levels are suitable for processing into high quality frozen semen.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of probiotics Bacillus subtilis on feed efficiency and egg mass of laying hens. This research was using 36 of 38 weeks-old laying hens Isa Brown strain. The concentration of probiotics B. subtilis was 1 x 109 CFU/ml, there were three kinds of treatments, P0 (without given probiotics B. subtilis), P1 (given 0.1 gram of probiotics B. subtilis per kg of feed), and P2 (given 0.2 gram of probiotic B. subtilis per kg of feed). The results of feed efficiency, the provision of probiotics can provide a significantly different values (p <0.05) between treatments either P0, P1, or P2. Provision probiotics P1 showed the highest value of feed efficiency (81.72 ± 5.28), while the lowest value at P0 was (64.06 ± 3.30). The results showed that there were significantly different in egg mass values (p <0.05) between treatments both P0, P1, and P2. Probiotic P2 shows the highest value (53.30 ± 2.13), while the lowest egg mass value of probiotics is as much as P1 (40.83 ± 4.73). Based on the results of this study it can be concluded that the B. subtilis probiotics both at a dose of 0.1 gram / kg of feed and a dose of 0.2 gram / kg of feed can affect the growth performance of laying hens.

Abstract

Dairy products are innovative to improve the economic value of milk. Poor attention to the importance of good hygiene and milk handling of milk can lead to microbial contamination of milk, such as coliform and Staphylococcus aureus. This study aimed were to define the safety of ready-to-drink milk which sold around Dramaga and Cilibende IPB University campuses based on the total coliform and S. aureus and to determine the factors that affected it. Data were obtained by questionnaire from 12 sellers, furthermore milk samples were taken from 13 ready-to-drink milk’s sellers with 3 replication The data were presented descriptively and analyzed using chi-square test to determine the relationship between the practice of the sellers with total contamination of coliform and S. aureus. The data results were compared with SNI 01-7388-2009 concerning the Maximum Limits of Microbial Contamination in Food. The average of coliform contamination in Dramaga and Cilibende 5,92×103 ± 9,28×103 CFU/ml and 7,60×104 ± 1,25×105 CFU/ml, respectively. The average of S. aureus contamination in Dramaga and Cilibende 3,84×102 CFU/ml ± 5,36×102 and 8,44×104 ± 1,96×105 CFU/ml, respectively. Furthermore, several practices of ready-to-drink milk sellers had a significant relationship with coliform contamination (p<0.05), which were the table cleanliness (p=0.020), distance to the crowd (p=0.001), and hand washing (p=0.001). The practice of ready-to-drink milk sellers had a significant relationship with S. aureus contamination (p<0.05) which were the table cleanliness (p=0.020), and distance of the crowd (p=0.020). The high contamination by coliform and S. aureus is caused by the poor sanitation and personal hygiene of the milk seller during the serving and processing of the milk.
