Abstract

Nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system, being the key providers of primary healthcare as they comprise 60-80% of the total health workforce, and provide 90% of all heath care services in the primary healthcare arena.  This study aimed to evaluate the concordance  of family nursing and community health nursing curriculum with international standards and national needs for undergraduate nursing education in West Java. This study used evaluation research design using BEKA framework as a tool to perform curriculum analysis which included Benchmarking, Evidencing, Knowing, and Applying stages. The international standards competency for family nursing and community health nursing, course study guide and samples of students reports were collected and analysed using content analysis. In addition participants from six nursing schools were interviewed to identify application of the curriculums. The results show that some of the competencies outlined in the course study guide were not aligned with international standards of family nursing from International Family Nursing Association. Four dimensional framework of family nursing and community health nursing curriculums were proposed to improve the alignment between international standards as well as local and government needs for family nursing and community health nursing curriculums. School of nursing can apply this framework as guidance to develop their own learning plans based on international standards, national, local and institutional needs. Abstract

Introductions: Less critical nurses in Indonesia may happen due to the lack of contribution of the nursing institutions in enhancing the critical thinking skill. The PSGW is one of clinical teaching methods that facilitates students to criticize the current literatures. This study aimed at identifying the effectiveness of the PSGW on students’ critical appraisal skill (CAS) improvement during the medical surgical nursing clinical placement. Methods: This quasy-experimental study used pre-posttest control group design. The subjects were students who are currently in the professional practice stage of medical surgical nursing area. They were randomly assigned into two groups: 30 subjects in intervention group who conducted PSGW and 30 subjects in control group who conducted standard method of journal presentation. CAS questionnaires developed by Oxford University had been used to measure students’ CAS in criticizing the journal. The data was analyzed using Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney, paired  t-test, and independent t-test with level of significance at 0.05.Results: The intervention group experienced a significant increase in CAS score (p=0.0001) after performing the PSGW, while the control group experienced an insignificant decrease (p=0.596) after performing the standard method of journal reading. When comparing the posttest CAS of both groups, the result showed that there were significant differences in the posttest CAS scores (p=0.0001) with large effect size (r=0.63).Conclusions: The PSGW is an effective learning method for clinical teaching. Further study needs to be performed to investigate the effectiveness of PSGW on the academic learning process.

Abstract

Introduction: Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is a chronic infectious disease that can affect the patient's physical appearance so that it has an impact on the patient's psychosocial condition, including the emergence of anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression in MDR-TB patients have an impact on the patient's rejection of the diagnosis and they choose to stop the treatment process. The incidence of anxiety and depression in MDR-TB patients is influenced by several factors, one of which is self-stigma. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the factor of self-stigma on the incidence of depression in MDR-TB patients.Method: The study design used a cross-sectional approach with a sample of 71 MDR-TB patients undergoing treatment. The study used a questionnaire that was filled out directly by the patient during the treatment process. The sampling technique used purposive sampling by setting inclusion criteria. The bivariate statistical test used in the study was chi-square.Results: The results of the self-stigma study obtained a p-value = 0.000 <0.05 with an OR value of 54.643, meaning that there was a significant relationship between self-stigma and depression in MDR-TB patients. Conclusions: MDR-TB patients with high self-stigma have a higher chance of experiencing depression than patients with low self-stigma. Suggestions in this study are that it is hoped that the family, health workers, community, and government can help reduce the stigma against patients with MDR-TB. Promotive efforts by providing support and education to the community can help to eliminate the stigma so that the incidence of depression in MDR-TB patients can be minimized.

Abstract

Background: World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends every mother to provide exclusive breastfeeding for their infants because of its benefits. However the exclusive breastfeeding rate in Indonesia was only 35%in 2013. One of the main factors affecting low exclusive breastfeeding rate was maternal perception of having low breastmilk supply. There were no previous studies examining the effect of "Insufficient Milk Supply" concept intervention on mother’s perception of low breastmilk production. This research was an innovation in nursing.Aim: To investigate the effect of intervention program based on “Insufficient Milk Supply” concept on mother’s perception of low breastmilk supply. Methods: This study was a quasy experiment pretest-posttest. Postpartum mothers were provided an intervention using a module based on the concept of "Insufficient Milk Supply". The perception of breastmilk production was measured using the Nine-items of Lactation Scale. Data were analyzed using independent t test and paired t test. Results: The t test assumptions were examined and yielded that the data were normally distributed and the variances were homogeneous. The results showed there were significant differences between the scores of pre- and post-test in the intervention group (t = -9,03, p < 0.001).Conclusion: This study offers evidence that Insufficient Milk Supply can be used in nursing practice as a concept to improve the perception of the mother's breastmilk supply.
