Abstract

This study is aimed at identifying facilities offered through English property advertisements in printed and electronic media in Indonesia, describing the meanings of lingual and non-lingual elements in the form of pictures in the advertisements and interpreting the messages based on sociocultural perspectives. This is a descriptive qualitative study, applying content analysis to 44 data taken from Kompas, The Jakarta Post, Trans TV and Metro TV. The results show as the following. There are 13 facilities offered through the advertisments. The dominating ones are service, recreation, furniture, and sports. The lingual elements exist in brand, slogan, and price. All brands and products symbolize grandeur, luxury, beauty, exclusiveness, and comfort in a modern life. Prices are in Rupiah, US and Singaporean Dollars, and Euro, indicating that the properties are marketed internationally. The visual elements, supporting the lingual meanings, consists of grand houses with gardens and swimming pools, luxurious furniture and interior designs and beaches. Abstract

A predicate of a passive sentence in Japanese can be filled in by a transitive, ditransitif, and intransitive verb. Passive sentences with intransitive verbs as the predicates commonly express oppositive meaning. Linguists commonly classify this type of passive sentence regarding only to its syntactical function and category. This study however investigates passive intransitive sentences regarding not only their syntactical function and category, but also their semantic construction. The study finds five types of syntactical construction of passive intransitive (I~V). Each type of the passive is distinguished by the semantic information of its modifiers.

Abstract

This study examines the use of languages by foreign students in learning the Indonesian language for foreign speakers (BIPA). Sociolinguistic approach is employed in which in-depth interview is used to elicit the reseach data. Sociolinguistic analysis is conducted by considering the social context of the speech components. The results show that the dominant use of Indonesian language by the learners is the language of instruction acquired in the process of learning the language. English emerges as the language of mediation between teachers and students spoken when they have difficulties in learning. Another language that appears in the language learning is Javanese which is the vernacular of Surakarta. Aspects of Indonesian cultural context should be taught to the learners. A variety of language styles for formal and informal conversation must be understood by foreign students so as to avoid errors in language usage.

Abstract

Enormous imbalance of study between language impoliteness and language politeness has become serious concern among those who regard pragmatics important field in language learning. Impoliteness constitutes existing phenomena in most societies and cultures but it has so far been regarded as outside the study of pragmatics itself. This paper is meant to trigger the study of this seemingly-new phenomenon that the study of pragmatics becomes more and more extensive in Indonesia. The restriction of the available theories of this pragmatic phenomenon should not hinder the study of pragmatics.

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to produce a model of TQA from English into Indonesian. It employed a descriptive-qualitative approach. Its data were obtained through content analysis, interviewing with key informants, FGD and observation, and analyzed with an interactive data analysis technique. The final findings of this research indicate the followings. First, the Model of TQA produced assesses the quality of translation holistically. Second, the Model is applicable for assessing the quality of translation within the contexts of translation research and teaching and of professional settings. Third, the Model opens opportunities for raters to assess various units of translation, ranging from micro to macro levels. Fourth, the effectiveness of the Model in assessing quality of translation depends solely on the ability of the assessors or raters in applying it in various settings. Prior to its application, those engaged in every translation quality assessment should read and understand all relevant information and procedures of how it should be employed.
