Abstract

In recent years, development of magnesium (Mg) as biodegradable implant very rapidly in orthopedic applications. This is due to its young’s modulus close to young modulus of natural bone. However, Mg implants demonstrate higher biological activity which could cause high degradation rate in human bio-environment. Consequently, needed to develop Mg-based alloys with superior corrosion performance. In the present study, it has been attempted to develop biocomposite of Magnesium Zinc-5% Hydroxyapatite (MgZn-5%HAp) as biodegradable bone implant. The biocomposites were prepared by adding 5wt.% powders to MgZn powder and then were sintered at temperature 350 oC in vacuum furnace for holding an hour. The characterization of MgZn-5wt%HAp biocomposite was examined by Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) while corrosion tested by potensiostat. The SEM / EDS and XRD results indicated that some of the Zn atoms have dissolved in Mg to form a MgZn solid solution. The SEM results also showed that the MgZn-5%HAp biocomposite has a microstructure with a matrix Mg and HAp at the grain boundary. The presence of HAp in the sample resulted in a smaller crystallite size and corrosion rate compared to  the one with MgZn alloy.

Abstract

Intestinal motility and contractility in cats can be affected by many factors that originate from inside and outside the body. Anesthesia is one of the factors that could influence it.This research was conducted to figure the effect of tiletamine-zolazepam on the intestinal motility and contractility in the cats through contrast radiography study. Three male cats weighing between 2,5-3,5kg were used in this present study. Radiography procedure was performed twice on each cat: without anesthesia and one week later with anesthesia (0,02 mg/BW atropine sulphate and 10 mg/BW Zoletil®).The cats were given a positive contrast, barium sulphate (BaSO4) 30% w/v (12 ml/kg BWper oral) followed by radiography study. Radiography was performed at 5, 30, 60, 120, and 180 minutes after administration of BaSO4. The cats were positioned on laterolateral view. Data were analyzed descriptively using zone division and quantitatively by measuring the difference between the intestines diameter during contraction and relaxation. The intestinal diameter was measured and statistically tested using ANOVA. Result showed that in minute 180, BaSO4 reached zone four in the unanesthetized cat while in the anesthetized cat, it was still empty. The diameter differences of the unanesthetized cat was higher compared to the anesthetized meaning that the intestinal contraction in the unanesthetized cat was higher. This means that tiletamine-zolazepam anesthetic reducedof intestinal motility andcontractility. Keywords: cats, barium sulphate, gastrointestinal motility, contrast radiography, tiletamine-zolazepam

Abstract

Skin flap is one of the techniques use for large wound closure. This study were aimed to determine the rate of cure of skin flap H-plasty and linear closure based on subjective and objective clinical observation. Six male local cats at 1-2 years old, weighing 3-4 kg, were divided into two treatment groups. All cats were made 3 x 3 cm wound in the thoracic area for skin graft. Thoracic defects were treated with skin flap techniques H-plasty (group I) and linear closure (group II). Subjective observations was performed on days 3, 6, 9 and 12 after skin flap which was covering skin discoloration, pain response, time hair growth as well a bleeding tests that performed on the 18th day after the skin flap. Objective observation was made on day 18 by administration of 0.9% NaCland observed the absorption time, while the onset of drug effect was noticed by pupillary reflex observation after 0.2 ml adrenaline injection under the skin flap. The observation on day 9 showed that skin flap linear closure wasbetter than skin flap H-plasty, which was characterized by similar skin color with surrounding skin, reduced pain response and rapid hair growth. Bleeding blood test was showed a glowing red colored and immediately came outafter incision in both groups. The absorption time of 0.9% NaCl and the effects of adrenaline were faster in thegroup skin flap linear closure. Skin flap H-plasty and linear closure techniques can be applied to repair woundsin the thoracic area of cat skin, however, the linear closure flap of skin was healing faster than skin flap H-plasty.

Abstract

The aim of this project is to develop a detailed accessible set of reference images of the normal forelimb radiographic anatomy in sunda porcupine (Hystrix javanica), including digit,carpus, metacarpal, radius, ulna, and humerus. This project that using 2 healthy sunda porcupines (male and female) was radiograped using digital radiography and standars projection. Four images, illustrating the normal radiographic anatomy of the forelimb were selected and presented along with detailed description. These image are aimed to be of assistence to veterinary surgeons, veterinary students, medic concervation especially in domestic wild animal, and veterinary researchers by enabling understand of the normal radiographic anatomy of the forelimb, and allowing comparison with the abnormal radiographic.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate Indonesian stray cat (KLI) eyes by transpalpebrae B-mode ultrasound imaging. Eight healthy adult stray cats with 3.0-4.0 kg body weight were underwent of eyes ultrasound scanning without anesthesia or sedation. Linear ultrasound transducer with 7.5-15 MHz of frequency and ultrasound-gel were adhered directly to palpebral on the closed eyes. The results showed that the internal architecture of eyes was visible in different echogenicity according to the constituent of eyes structure. The sonograms with hypoechoic to hyperechoic parts of eyes were cornea, iris, cilliary body, suspensor ligament, sclera, and lens capsule. Moreover, anechoic parts of sonograms that having aqueous constituent were anterior chamber, posterior chamber, and vitreous humor. Based on the result, it can be concluded that B-mode ultrasound was able to assess the eyes through transpalpebral scanning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of blood flow which passed through theaortic valve of normal Indonesian mongrel dogs using trans-thoracic Pulsed Wave Doppler (PWD)echocardiography. Eight (8) adult dogs (three male dogs and 5 female dogs) with an average age 3.31 ± 0.59years and average body weight 12.45 ± 1.30 kg were used in the study. Trans-thoracic PWD echocardiographyexaminations were performed in conscious/unsedated animals at the left lateral recumbence position. Theinstruments used in this study were: i) two dimensional ultrasound device and ii) phased array transducersmall foot print with 3.7 – 5.0 MHz frequency. Six elements of PWD were measured: i) heart rate (HR); ii)peak velocity (Vpeak); iii) velocity time integral (VTI); iv) mean pressure gradient (MPG); v) pulsatilityindex (PI); and vi) ratio of systole-diastole (S/D). Results showed the typically characteristics of blood flowin semilunar aorta valve is demonstrated by the only one peak wave (peak velocity = Vpeak) upon examinationby placing the Doppler scan volume right on the aorta valve. In general, all six elements of PWD measuredwere found to be higher in female dogs compared to male dogs. However, these differences were notstatistically significant (P>0.05).

Abstract

Mimusops elengi L. , Averrhoa carambola L. and Curcuma xanthorrihiza Roxb singly were reported to have hypothensif effect. Mechanism underlying decrease of blood pressure was suggested through modification of cardiac activity. The Effect of Mimusops elengi L., combined with Averrhoa carambola L. and Curcuma xanthorrihiza Roxb extract on cardiac activity were studied using ECG on 12 male cats that were grouped to be a control group administered aquadestilata, and treatment group administered extract of 21 mg and 82 mg/2 kg bw orally respectively. The extracts were given 3 h prior to ECG. The results showed a decrease in P wave, QRS complex and the speed of the heart rate after administration of combination of extract . However QT and PR intervals were increased. This showed that the extract can weaken a contraction of the Atria and ventricles, prolonging the onset of the occurrence of atrial contraction towards ventricular contraction, extending the onset of contraction and relaxation of the ventricles and cause a decrease in heart rate. Based the cardiogram, It was concluded that their combination is valuable for treatment of aritmia.

Abstract

Heart diseases are the main cause of sudden deaths in cats. Those diseases can be diagnosed using ultrasonography. This study aims to investigate the cases of heart diseases of cats diagnosed by ultrasonography (echocardiography) in Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, IPB University and My Vets Animal Clinic, Kemang. Total thirty-one patients’ medical record files from veterinary teaching hospitals (eleven files) and clinics (twenty files) in 2013-2017 were indicated to have heart diseases. The datas acquired from patients’ medical records were signalement, B-mode, M-mode and color flow Doppler echocardiography results, and definitive diagnoses from medical records. Echocardiography examination was performed on conscious animals using a microconvex probe with the right parasternal view and left apical view. The heart diseases were divided into two categories, i.e. congenital and acquired, and each category describes age, sex, and race predispositions to heart diseases. In this study, congenital heart diseases found were aortic stenosis and ventricular septal defect. The acquired heart diseases found in this study were hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, endocardiosis, mitral regurgitation, tricuspid regurgitation, and pericarditis. The results of this study stated that acquired heart diseases had the bigger proportion in cats, compared to congenital diseases. The most prevalent heart disease was hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. As a conclusion, male, Persia and 7-12 years old cats are more susceptible to heart diseases.
