Abstract

The main weaknesses of particleboard are that it has a lower strength and a lower dimensional stability compared to solid wood. Therefore, in order to gain excellent properties prior to be used, it needs some treatments, i.e., resin thermoplastic laminated. The objectives of this study were to improve the physical and mechanical properties of rubber wood particleboard laminated with low density ethylene (LDPE) resin. Rubber wood particleboard was laminated with 4 different concentrations of LDPE resins (i.e., 5, 10, 15, and 20%). The physical and mechanical properties of board were evaluated both in dry and wet states. The results indicated that the dimensional stability of board after laminated with LDPE resin showed significant improvement in term of water absorption and thickness swelling. Modulus of rupture and srew resistant of resulted particle board were increased with addition of LDPE resin. Modulus of elasticity and surface hardness of the particleboard were slightly decreased with addition of LDPE resin. The intenal bond was unchanged. The best treatment was found on lamination the surface of particleboard with 5% LDPE resin. All the physical and mechanical properties of particleboard laminated with 5% LDPE resin met the requirements of JIS A 5908-2003 standard.Key words: dimensional stabilization, low density polyethylene, mechanical properties, particleboard

Abstract

Hybrid Bamboo Oriented Strand Boards (OSB) were produced to improve bamboo OSB's physical and mechanical properties. Shelling ratio adjustment of the strand type combination could determine the optimal physical and mechanical properties of hybrid bamboo oriented strand boards (OSB). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of hybrid betung and andong bamboos OSB at various shelling ratios. Steam modified strands of betung and andong bamboo were used as an outer layer and core layer, respectively. Hybrid bamboo OSBs were prepared with 0.7 g cm-3 target density and 8% phenol-formaldehyde resin content. Three layers of OSB were made with outer: core shelling ratios of 30:70, 40:60, 50:50, and 60:40. The physical and mechanical properties of the OSB were tested referring to the JIS A 5908-2003 standard. The targeted board density was achieved and the physical properties of all hybrid bamboo OSB have met the requirement of CSA O437.0 (Grade O-1) standard criteria. The parallel modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) increased with increasing outer layer ratio. However, the perpendicular MOE and MOR decreased with increasing outer layer ratio. The internal bonding (IB) of the OSB with a shelling ratio of 30:70 and 40:60 met with the requirement of the CSA O437.0 (Grade O-1) standard.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of hybrid particleboard made from combination of sengon wood (Falcataria moluccana), jabon wood (Anthocephalus cadamba), and betung bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) with hot water immersion treatment. Pretreatment with hot water immersion was carried out in water bath at 80 ºC for 2 hours. The boards were made using urea formaldehyde (UF) adhesive with (30x30x0.9) cm3 size and 0.6 g cm-3 target density. Physical and mechanical properties of hybrid particleboards were evaluated based on JIS A 5908-2003 standard. The results showed that the combination treatment with bamboo particles can increase the mechanical properties and dimensional stability of the particleboards especially when combined with jabon particles. Hot water immersion treatment can improve the mechanical properties (MOE, MOR and IB) of hybrid particleboards. However, hot water immersion treatment decreased dimensional stability (thickness swelling and water absorption) of hybrid particleboards.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to evaluate the effect of wood species and layer structure on physical and mechanical properties of strand board made from Paraserianthes falcataria, Maesopsis eminii and Acacia mangium woods collected from planted forest in Bogor district, Indonesia. The densities of P. falcataria, M. eminii and A. mangium woods were 0.36, 0.41 and 0.46 g cm-3, respectively. Three types of layer structures namely perpendicular, parallel, and random orientation were applied. Methylene diisocyanate (MDI) resin with 7% resin amount (w/w) was used. The physical and mechanical properties of strand board were evaluated based on CSA 0437.0 standard. The results indicated that strand board manufactured from wood with lower density (P. falcataria) had higher mechanical properties (modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity and internal bond) and lower dimensional stability (water absorption and thickness swelling) compared to strand board manufactured from higher density (A. mangium), vice versa. Strand orientation strongly affected the physical and mechanical properties of board with perpendicular orientation showed superior performance as compared to parallel and random orientation. Physical and mechanical properties of oriented strand board (OSB) made from fast growing tree species met the requirement of CSA 0437.0 standard for grade O-1 OSB panels.Key words: layer structure, methylene diisocyanate resin, strand board, tropical wood species,

Abstract

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) empty fruit bunches (EFB) have not been utilized optimally. Currently, it is considered as a resource with low economic value. This biomass can be converted into bioenergy through a torrefaction process. Torrefaction is a mild pyrolysis at temperatures ranging between 200 and 300 °C, and it is generally performed under an inert atmosphere. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of torrefaction using Counter-Flow Multi Baffle (COMB) on the properties of oil palm EFB pellets. Torrefaction was conducted at 280 °C temperature with a residence time of 4 minutes. The results showed a decrease in the equilibrium moisture content and an increase in hydrophobicity after torrefaction using the COMB reactor. The change in the hygroscopic property could make the oil palm EFB pellet more stable against chemical oxidation and microbial degradation, hence self-heating and auto-ignition during storage could be prevented. The heating value of biomass increased after torrefaction. Torrefaction with the COMB reactor resulted in a heating value of 17.90 MJ/kg, which is comparable with the results of oxidative torrefaction (with longer residence time) of 18.28 MJ/kg. The results suggested that torrefaction using the COMB reactor could provide a great improvement in the quality of the bioenergetic properties of oil palm EFB pellets. However, the high ash content of the EFB pellets implied that the EFB pellets suitable for a small-scale application, but not yet for cofiring in power plants or as a feedstock for gasification. Keywords: Counter-Flow Multi Baffle; oil palm empty fruit bunches; renewable; torrefactionA B S T R A KTandan kosong kelapa sawit (Elaeis guineensis) belum dimanfaatkan secara optimal.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of torrefaction temperature on the physical and mechanical properties of betung bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper) pellets. Torrefaction was conducted in an electric furnace at 200°C, 240°C, and 280°C for 50 minutes. The physical properties evaluated included color change, density, moisture content, water resistance, and water adsorption. The mechanical properties were also investigated by compressive strength test. The result showed that torrefaction affected the color properties of betung bamboo pellets with ∆E values of more than 12 or totally changed. The density and moisture content of torrefaction bamboo betung pellets decreased with increasing torrefaction temperature. The results also showed that the hydrophobic properties of the bamboo betung pellets improved with the increased of torrefaction temperature. The highest compressive strength value was obtained by bamboo betung pellets torrefied at 200°C and the values decreased with the increase of temperature. In conclusion, there were differences in the physical and mechanical properties of bamboo betung pellets that were torrefied at different temperatures. Torrefaction with an electric furnace effectively improved the quality of betung bamboo pellets. Keywords:   Bamboo betung, pellets, temperature, torrefaction
