Abstract

This study aims to discover the effect of applying Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) Technique on Student’s Achievement in writing Recount Text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. This population was the 80 students of SMP Negeri 1 Stabat as Sample. The samples of the research were two classes divided into two groups, experimental and control group which were chosen by using random sampling technique. The Grade VIII-B as Experimental Group was taught by using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition and grade VIII-A as control group was taught by using conventional teaching writing. The instrument used to collect the data was by asking the students to write a Recount text. Based on the result of the data analysis, it was concluded that using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition significantly affect the student’s ability in writing recount text (t-calculated > t-table, p=0.05). The using CIRC made the students write recount text grammatically that without using CIRC. The calculation of t-test is 2.38 > 1.67 with df 78 and the level of significance 0.05. It means that the using CIRC has significant effect on writing recount text. Abstract

Abstract This study aims at earmarking some related issues regarding the teaching of English language to francophone pupils by francophone teachers. As regard the theoretical framework, the connectionism, acculturation and teaching-learning theories was used. The methodology in this study is the quantitative and qualitative approach and the random sampling technique is used in the selection of the population under study. The research instruments that are used are the interview and observation. The instruments were administered taking into consideration the pronunciation of sounds (phonology) pluralisation of nouns, sentence construction, the use of articles and tenses (morpho-syntax). A total of 73 teachers from six primary schools were interviewed and observed. The frequency distribution technique is used for analyzing data. Analyzing the data collected proves that the francophone teachers have difficulties in pronouncing some sounds in the English language. The teachers equally have difficulties in putting some nouns in their plural forms, constructing of sentences and correct use of articles and tenses. From the findings, the researcher made some recommendations. That a solid foundation should be laid during the initial training on the teaching of the English language. Secondly, in-service training should be encouraged for teachers already in the field. The researcher also suggested that Pedagogic Inspectors in charge of bilingualism should organize regular pedagogic seminar on English language for the francophone teachers. Abstract

In an era of increasingly advanced globalization, the ability to speak English is essential to keep up with the changing times. This study was to analyze the correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and speaking skills of grade eight students at MTs Negeri 1 Tanjung Pura. The sample of this study was 15 students of class VIII B which were taken by using a purposive sampling technique. This study was a correlational method in a quantitative design by using correlation statistical tests to describe and measure between two or more variables. The Correlation Product Moment formula using SPSS was used to determine if there is a correlation and degree of correlation between English vocabulary mastery and speaking skills. From the data analysis it was found that there was a correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking skill of grade eight students of MTs Negeri 1 Tanjung Pura with the level correlation value was 0,559 or 55,90 % or on the level of “Fair” Correlation. Abstract

Teaching EFL students are both challenging and demanding as English is neither the students’ mother tongue nor their second language. Therefore, it is essentially required to select an effective way or technique in achieving the objectives of the lesson. This study was aimed to investigate the use of sequence picture technique and its effectiveness in teaching EFL students how to write a procedure text. This study was conducted by using quantitative research with one group pretest-posttest design at Universitas Prima Indonesia. The steps involve administering pretest measuring the dependent variable, applying the experimental treatment X to the subjects; and administering a posttest again measuring the dependent variable. There were 40 students taken as the subject of the study. The data were collected through a pretest and a posttest. The result on this study showed that the students’ responses and performances were improved. It can be seen from the finding which showed that students’ percentage in using the language components such as grammar, sequence words, commands or imperative sentences, and adverbial phrases accurately. The result of the questionnaire also showed that the students considered sequence picture technique was effective in helping them write procedure text correctly.        Key Words: EFL Students, Procedure Text, Sequence Picture Media
