Abstract

Dyslexic students struggle to learn how to read. Yet, few studies reported on how dyslexic students learn to read. In this respect, special education teachers have adopted a myriad of ways to overcome dyslexic students’ reading problems. To respond to this need, the purpose of this study is to examine how phonology-based reading instruction could help dyslexic students improve their early reading abilities. Grounded in a mixed methods research design, four dyslexic students of primary school were recruited to participate in this study. The results of the study showed that the phonology-based reading instruction had a positive impact on improving the dyslexic students’ early reading abilities, particularly in Bahasa Indonesian-medium reading texts. This suggests that phonology-based reading instruction could effectively be implemented if special education teachers could enact phonological instruction as a prerequisite for identifying the students’ early reading ability and phonics instruction as an instructional reinforcement for building students’ early reading repertoire.

Abstract

English literacy is inseparable from the four interrelated aspects of skills which are listening, speaking, reading, and writing aspects. Among the four English literacy skills, writing is considered the most difficult skill, so we need a special technique to practice these skills. For children with visual impairments, writing English vocabulary becomes a challenge especially during the learning process, limitations in seeing make the children often experience writing errors especially in writing structure because children only write English vocabulary based on what is heard, especially from those speakers who are not native speakers. The purpose of this study is to explain the analysis of English literacy errors of children with visual impairments aiming to improve English vocabulary writing literacy skills. The study uses qualitative methods with descriptive methods. Data collection techniques were carried out using observation, interview, and documentation (data triangulation) techniques. The results showed that writing literacy errors that often arise are replacing, omitting and adding letters to English vocabulary based on the results of sound listening skills and the ability to remember vocabulary that the children already knew.

Abstract

The ability to read children with Down Syndrome is relatively lower than that of children in general. This is because in reading there are aspects of thinking such as remembering, understanding, comparing, distinguishing, finding, analyzing, organizing, and applying what is contained in the reading. This is difficult for children with Down Syndrome to do so that in the reading process special methods that are not abstract are needed. The purpose of this study was to improve the pre-reading skills of Down Syndrome children through the contextual SAS (Structural Analytic Synthetic) method. The method used in this study is literature research. Based on the results of studies conducted from relevant theories and sources, it shows that the contextual sentence method provides a great opportunity to improve the beginning reading ability of children with Down Syndrome.

Abstract

The ability to read is a basic cognitive ability needed by everyone and is a complex activity because it requires visual ability, memory, auditory, and good pronunciation. Mild retardation children find it difficult to remember new things so that the majority of them have difficulty in differentiating simple syllables, words, and phrases that impact the ability to read the beginning. The current reading method has not yet accommodated the constraints faced. Therefore, it is necessary to find a suitable method for them by developing syllable method through repositioning sound. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the syllable method through sound repositioning can improve the reading ability of children with mild intellectual disabilities. This research uses SSR experimental method with an A-B-A design. The data collection is done by giving a preliminary reading test consisting of the ability to read syllable patterned kv- kv, simple sentences, and simple paragraphs. Significantly the results of this study were able to improve the reading ability of early childhood with mild intellectual disability class III in SLB C Dharma Bhakti Dharma Pertiwi Bandar Lampung. The conclusion of the syllable method through sound repositioning can improve the reading ability of the beginning especially for the children with mild intellectual disability and apply to the subject under study. Recommendations of syllable methods through repositioning sounds can be helped through supporting media such as colored card media, concrete objects, and interactive drawings, the child is easy to understand and more attention to the child to foster motivation to learn.

Abstract

Orientation and mobility skills are special skills that must be mastered by children with visual impairment, thus an orientation and mobility intervention program is important to develop. Fear or anxiety in children with visual impairment related to orientation and mobility can be caused by fear from within the children or from the environment. Personality, motivation, psychosocial factor, and family and community attitudes all contribute to one's reaction to mobility activities independently. This research aims to reduce the fear of children with visual impairment in performing orientation and mobility activities by implementing an intervention program through bibliotherapy technique. This research is a case study research with a qualitative approach. Bibliotherapy was carried out on two young children with visual impairment. The results of the program implementation show that children's fear or anxiety could be reduced in both cases in this research as seen by autonomous moves of the two children from the mother and caregiver and began to learn to trace the walls of the room.
