Abstract

Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera) have chelating agent properties that act as natural antioxidants in binding heavy metals and free radical scavengers, with cadmium being one of the heavy metals free radicals having toxic effects on the body. Exposure to cadmium can reduce the activity of lipoprotein lipase enzymes (LPL) which function in the triglycerides and free fatty acids catabolism process, and can increase cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Moringa (Moringa oleifera) on Cadmium chloride-induced white rats (Rattus norvegicus) using an experimental research design with a quantitative analysis technique. This study uses the level of cadmium and LDL cholesterol for the dependent variable and the dose of Moringa leaf extract (Moringa oleifera) for its independent variable. The samples used are white rats (Rattus norvegicus) aged 8-12 weeks with a weight of 150-200 grams, along with blood drawn from the heart for the specimen. The researcher conducted the study at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Airlangga University; Surabaya Health Laboratory Center; and Surabaya Bakti Analysis Laboratory from October 2021 to June 2022 using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) and Chemical Analyzer BS-200. The results show that the average value of cadmium and LDL cholesterol levels in white rats in treatment group 1 are 0.605 g/dL and 8.25 mg/dL, group 2 are 0.075 g/dL & 18.5 mg/dL; and group 3 are 0.08125 g/dL and 12 mg/dL. Based on the statistical analysis of the One-Way ANOVA test, the sig. p-value is > 0.05. Thus, the average value of cadmium and LDL cholesterol has no significant difference. Compared to the 400 mg/kgBW and 500 mg/kgBW, the 600 mg/kgBW dose has the best effectiveness in reducing LDL cholesterol in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) after being induced with cadmium chloride. This study recommends consuming fresh Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera) as much as 66.522 grams per human/day as an additional antioxidant and chelating agent.

Abstract

Motor vehicles emit exhaust gas emissions that produce pollutants, one of the compounds contained is carbon monoxide (CO). CO may cause intoxication in humans if exposed for a long time especially street vendors because the work area is filled with vehicle fumes containing CO gas. High CO levels in the air indicate HbCO levels to increase. The increased of HbCO levels will cause abnormal hemoglobin levels and induce vasoconstriction which makes blood pressure increase. The purpose of this study was to prove the correlation between CO levels in the air with HbCO, hemoglobin, and blood pressure levels to street vendors in the Gading Fajar Sidoarjo Street Vendor Area. This research uses the Conway diffusion cell method and is an analytic observational study with a cross sectional design implemented at the Surabaya Health Laboratory Center and the Hematology Laboratory of Medical Laboratory Technology Department Poltekkes Kemenkes Surabaya in March 2022. Blood tests was carried out on 25 street vendors using random sampling technique. The results showed that average air CO level was 11.0 ppm and 13.3 ppm; mean HbCO levels 0.87%; mean hemoglobin levels 14.4 g/dL; mean systolic blood pressure levels 128 mmHg; and the mean of diastolic blood pressure levels 80 mmHg. The data were analyzed using SPSS. The outcome of normality test showed that the data was not normally distributed. Statistical tests was performed using Spearman correlation. The conclusion showed there was correlation between air CO level with HbCO level, hemoglobin level, and blood pressure level on street vendors in the Gading Fajar Sidoarjo Street Vendor Area. If CO levels in the air increase, then HbCO levels and blood pressure also increase. Street vendors are expected to always use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as mouth masks when working to reduce the risk of exposure to CO gas and doing a healthy lifestyle as a preventive effort to avoid health problems.

Abstract

High exposure of cigarettes in Indonesia causes various disturbances in the body's metabolism, especially in the kidney, which is due to the cadmium metal content. Cadmium induces oxidative stress by the formation of free radicals and decrease natural antioxidant activity in the kidney organs (nephrotoxic). One way to overcome nephrotoxic by decreasing blood creatinine, we can utilize Moringa oleifera (MO) which is known as a "miracle plant" and have high contents of flavonoid groups, phenols, gallic acid, ascorbic acid and carotenoids as antioxidants and natural metal chelating agents. This research aimed to analyze the potential of Moringa leaves in decreasing cadmium and creatinine levels in the blood of white rats due to exposure of cigarette smoke (inhalation) at doses 200, 400 and 800 mg/kgwb. The type of research was an experimental study with quantitative analysis conducted in October 2021 – July 2022. The independent variable was the doses of Moringa leaves extract and the dependent variable were the blood cadmium and creatinine levels of white rats. The blood cadmium level was measured with AAS and the creatinine level was measured with Jaffe method without deproteination by photometry. The results of blood cadmium and creatinine levels in the treatment of MO extract at dose 200 mg/kgwb were 1.288875 μg/L and 0.85 mg/dL; MO extract at dose of 400 mg/kgwb were 0.811 μg/L and 0.775 mg/dL; MO extract at dose 800 mg /kgwb were 0.86275 μg/L and 0.7 mg/dL. Based on statistical analysis using Kruskal wallis, the results of the p value on cadmium levels in the blood were 0.004 < 0.05 and the p value on creatinine levels was 0.003 < 0.05, showed that there were significant differences in blood cadmium and creatinine levels in the treatment groups. Moringa leaf extract (Moringa oleifera) at a dose of 400 mg/kgwb had good potential in overcoming kidney damage in terms of creatinine levels due to cadmium exposure through cigarette smoke, which was equivalent to 44.3756 grams of fresh Moringa leaves that can be implemented for human as an additional antioxidant for overcoming free radicals.                                                       Keywords : Moringa oleifera, Cigarettes Smoke, Cadmium, Creatinine, Rattus norvegicus

Abstract

Secara umum keadaan warga panti asuhan dalam keadaan baik Social problems that often occur in society are abandoned children, street children, beggars, disabled people, neglected elderly, poor families, families with social problems, and so on. Children and poor people should have their human rights fulfilled by the State of Indonesia. However, in reality there are many children whose needs are not met, such as parents who are unable to provide for the child's needs or the child does not have parents. One effort to overcome this is to establish social institutions in the form of orphanages. Since the pandemic, children at the Mission Nusantara Surakarta Orphanage rarely receive health services and there is limited space for children to move. Theless than purpose of this community service is to assist the orphanage in monitoring the growth and development of residents and managers of the Mission Nusantara Orphanage in Surakarta. The implementation method is in the form of examinations on child growth and development, Counseling on Clean and Healthy Living, checking on the Nutritional Status of Children, counseling on how to brush their teeth properly, health checks for orphanage managers and training on disaster management. 6 percent) of the residents of the orphanage are male, almost half of them are aged 21-60 years, most (68.4 percent) have blood pressure less than 140/90 mmHg, most (73.1 percent) have normal nutritional status, almost all (94.4 percent) blood glucose less than 126 m/dL and uric acid less than 8 mg/dl. Similar activities are needed to see general body health and must be monitored periodically, so that the residents of the orphanage can find out their health status, especially now that they are still in a pandemic condition Covid-19
