Abstract

Situated in character-based education, the Indonesian Government mandates all teachers to incorporate moral values into school subjects. Teaching English to young learners (TEYL) is no exception. Little empirical evidence reports how school textbooks (e.g., language textbooks) discursively teach particular values explicitly and implicitly. To validate whether English for young learners (EYL) textbooks teach particular moral values, the present critical discourse study (CDA) reported in this article examines how moral content is discursively infused into EYL textbooks. Framed in Hallidayan Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory, it looks specifically at how particular moral values are represented in three nationally-adopted EYL textbooks through lexical choices, the representation of images, and selected texts that the textbook writers use to represent their attitudinal discourse. The findings show that the value of helping others is predominantly represented in the textbooks. The other dominant values encapsulated in the textbooks include politeness and caring. We conclude that the textbook writers place greater emphasis on such values as helping others, being polite, and caring in the textbooks in as much as they may want to teach these values at an early age.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The purposes of this research were to investigate learners’ perception in teaching English using Bahasa and English, learners’ preference for language use as the medium of instruction, and the subjects that can be taught by using Bahasa. The participants were 57 EFL learners in the fourth semester at a university in Jambi Province, Indonesia. This research was designed in mix method by distributing a questionnaire and conducting a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) as the data collection techniques. The findings showed that the students were excited to have English as the medium of instruction in their classroom. However, they also welcome the L1 (Bahasa Indonesia). In addition, the learners preferred to have English as the medium of instruction in their English classroom. In view of this, the use of both their L1 and L2 should be balanced. Moreover, concerning the subjects taught, the learners need the use of English especially in the Listening and Speaking classrooms. How to Cite: Haryanto, E. Sulistiyo, U. Abstract

Jigsaw learning strategy is considered effective in enhancing students’ learning outcomes. Yet, it is problematic for a science classroom that contains educational challenges. The aim of this study was to investigate the implementation of the jigsaw learning in science classes in Indonesian classrooms. This included the feasibility of the jigsaw strategy, the challenges that interfered with the implementations, and the necessary approach to fit the strategy with the challenges. A qualitative case study was used. Three chemistry classes (each consisted of 35 grade 11 students) and a chemistry teacher were involved in this study. Data were collected from classroom observations and interviews. The findings showed that jigsaw learning was not fully feasible as it could not be completely implemented in the participating classes. Unsupportive educational settings such as time limitation, large population, the ill-sized classroom, teacher’s lack of participation and the complexity of the jigsaw structure had influenced the lack of success of the implementations. Rather than seeking help from educational supports that normally involves a financial-concern educational policy, this study recommends adjusting the jigsaw structure to increase its feasibility in such learning condition.

Abstract

Anchored by the scant studies on Indonesian junior high school students’ orientation in learning English as a foreign language, this present study showcased how their learning orientation, delved into integrative and instrumental orientation models, was enacted. 144 students were recruited to answer an integrative and instrumental orientation 20-item questionnaire adapted from Attitude Motivation Test Battery (AMTB). Findings suggested that in terms of integrative orientation, the participants viewed learning English as a gateway to knowing and understanding native speakers’ cultural norms. This tenet was echoed by the global spread of English. In terms of instrumental orientation, the participants believed that learning English assisted them in career advancement. The results of this study concluded that the students, despite positively favored in learning English, leaned their English learning orientation on the native speakerism issue and the global spread of English.

Abstract

This paper presents an overview of English language teaching and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher education in Indonesia. Several factors appear to impede the success of teaching and learning EFL in Indonesia. Teacher qualifications and low English proficiency, classroom size, students’ motivation, classroom-oriented learning, and limited sources of learning are factors that influence EFL teaching and learning success. There are several constraints at work between language policy and language teaching classroom practices in Indonesia. First, students have very different motivations and background traits, which make it difficult to design and resource a single curriculum that suits all (or most) students across the country. Second, inadequate funds mean low wages for teachers, poor resourcing and the likelihood of large class sizes. Low teacher salaries cause the majority of teachers to work in additional jobs outside of school hours, which reduces the time they can allocate to lesson preparation, efforts to improve teaching practices and undertaking development to enhance their professional knowledge. Third, the influence of policy and curriculum politics is a constraint to language learning. In EFL teaching and learning contexts, teacher competence is essential to facilitating successful English exposure and learning during classroom activities. A number of Indonesian scholars are aware of this importance—for example, Soepriyatna (2012) identified the domains of EFL teachers’ competence in Indonesia. These domains can inform teacher education programs to design the curriculum in ways that align with the needs of EFL teachers during their classroom preparation.
