Abstract

The increase of milk import in Indonesia can be anticipated through the development of dairy farms based on mega-farm. Indonesia has already got dairy farms that adopt the mega-farm, one of which is the Greenfields Indonesia (GFI). GFI has become an export-oriented company, so GFI needs to pay attention to its sustainability on their business processes. This study was conducted at Dairy farm of Greenfields Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to analyze the business sustainability factors and to evaluate the factors of GFI dairy farming business based on the success factor of sustainability relation structure. The combination of delphi fuzzy and DEMATEL (Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory) was used for data processing. The research results showed that the standardization of the company's management system was the first priority based on the relation structure. The priority could affect the resilience of farm models that depended on manure management impact and create animal care through the availability of management of feed and drinking water. Keywords: dairy farming, sustainable business development, fuzzy delphi method, dematel, management system

Abstract

Global market provides opportunities for business owners to grow their business. However, to what extent farmers – as one of business owners – take benefits from the global markers remains unclear. This paper aims to investigate the impact of entrepreneurial orientation on farmers’ involvement in global supply chain, in turn on farm performance. The data were gathered from a survey of 320 samples of vegetable farmers in three regions in West Java, Indonesia. Using PLS analysis, our findings demonstrate that farmers with higher entrepreneurial orientation (reflected by dimensions of innovativeness, proactiveness, risk taking, competitive aggressiveness, and autonomy), involve more in global supply chain, and gain higher farm performance. Ultimately, the more farmers involve in global supply chain, the higher their farm performance. Our findings provide an empirical support for the impact of entrepreneurial orientation on enabling farmers’ ability to involve in broader supply chains beyond the domestic ones. As a consequence, farmers enjoy better farm performance.

Abstract

Milk is an essential commodity because the Government of Indonesia aimed to increase domestic milk production up to 50% by 2020. At the present, domestic milk production in Indonesia is only able to fulfill 20% of national milk demand. East Java and West Java Provinces are the main producers of milk in Indonesia. The objective of this study was to compare dairy farming management and business model between East Java and West Java, Indonesia. This study employed descriptive statistical and quantitative analyses. The dairy farming management questionnaire survey was conducted in May-July 2016 and the dairy business model survey was conducted in October-November 2018. There were no significant differences in dairy farming activities between farmers in Lembang and Malang whereas the average number of lactating cows is 5 and 3 heads, respectively. Farmers received farm gate price of Rp4,622 per liter in Lembang and Rp4,535 per liter in Malang. Based on net return over cash variable cost, farmers in Malang and Lembang earned around 20 percent from the milk price. There were six inclusive business models (IBMs) identified between smallholder farmers, cooperatives, and private companies with different characteristics have been implemented in East Java and West Java. It is suggested that cooperative improves its role in the integrated agribusiness system in order to improve the bargaining position of dairy farmers as well as in terms of cost-efficiency. The strategies and policies should be implemented to support development of sustainable, profitable and smallholder-inclusive dairy supply chains in East Java and West Java. Abstract

Agricultural produces pass a long journey from the farms up to the end consumers. With the advancement of information technology, aggregator businesses have emerged to shorten the long distribution chain. Therefore, farmers as producers can access information both on prices received by consumers and the characteristics of products demanded by consumers. This study aims to (1) explain the distribution chain mechanism through the aggregator business, and (2) analyze the impact on farmers who join the aggregator business distribution chain. There were 12 aggregator businesses and 36 farmers were interviewed as respondents from February to April 2019 using the purposive sampling method. The analysis was conducted using a descriptive approach and a paired sample t-test was carried out to see the impact of the existence of an aggregator on farmers. The results showed that the distribution chain through the aggregator business was shorter compared to the conventional one in which farmers had specific contracts or agreements with the aggregator business. The impact on farmers who join the aggregator business distribution chain is receiving higher prices, leading to increase farmers' income, transparency in prices where farmers know the selling prices at the consumer level, and farmers know consumer preferences for the products. It is expected that farmers will be able to produce better agricultural produces according to consumer preferences as well as to increase farmers' income. Keywords: distribution chain, price, product preferences, transparency

Abstract

The fisheries sector is one of Indonesia's promising industries. This industry accounts for approximately 2.6 percent of total national GDP. However, fishery products are perishable and contribute to a total loss of approximately 40due to the fishery cold chain implementation was not yet optimal. Cold chain facilities were out of reach for small fisheries due to the large investments required. The study aimed to describe the current state of fisheries cold chain implementation. In the fisheries value chain, value chain mapping was used to enable fact-finding and linkage between existing conditions, chain actors, and governance. The research was carried out in two areas: Banten and West Java. The research conducted 90 interviews with fishermen, 9 collecting traders, 6 big traders, and 6 transporters. The research found that there are numerous channels in the chain governance. These channels have different requirements and demands in both traditional and modern markets. Furthermore, the fisheries cold chains in both regions varied based on key features and the inclusion of small stakeholders in the business relation. In conclusion, limited cold chain infrastructures were utilized by the actors directly and indirectly for decent work and reduce poverty.
