Abstract

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are two of the most famous fairy tale writers with Children's and Household Tales (de: Kinder- und Hausmärchen) which have been popular over the last decades and are still read by the average people today. However, each story in their collection are rarely depicted an untroubled relationship between mother and child. The category of mothers inside these tales are traditionally divided into the positive mother figures, particularly for giving and creating life, protecting, feeding and nurturing their children; and conversely for the negative types of mother who starve their children and threaten to eat them. This study further aims to analyze the students' perceptions of women stereotypes through the tales of the Grimm Brothers. While the data was gathered through questionnaire and document analysis. The finding shows that students as participants have explored the perceptions surrounding these fairy tales that their mother figure are very weak and the women who become mothers do not care for and even neglect their children. This further attracts the researcher to immediately reveal the discord and competition between mother and child, especially daughters, which causes the unhealthy relationship of these two people.

Abstract

This research is focused on Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytic theory, which is described in the main character in Franz Kafka's novel The Metamorphosis. Gregor Samsa is the main character of The Metamorphosis. Gregor was a traveling salesman who was the Samsa family's sole son and earner. He mysteriously transforms into a massive bug, causing him to be estranged from his family. The author finds out why Gregor’s family members do not care about him and can't perceive him as a complicated human being with his own needs. As a result, Gregor has been estranged from his family and himself. The author argues that Gregor has another alienation from his physical reality after the transformation. His family views him as a terrifying, unpleasant monster, as seen by their fear of his existence and their decision to get rid of him. Gregor, who suffers from humiliation, views himself in the same light. He and his family unwittingly reject Gregor's potential as an individual, making him feel alienated. This research aims to identify how Gregor's conditions make him feel alienated and the connection between his identity crisis and alienation, as depicted in The Metamorphosis. Although humans are free human beings, society contributes to the perspective of self-identity and the decision of their own goals.

Abstract

This study explored the way in which Elementary School teachers used Indonesian folklore in their English classes to help students improve their analytical and critical reasoning skills. Visual culture theory was employed to examine data from interviews through the use of pictures. Moreover, Kress’ (1991) social-constructionist method was applied to investigate the additional realities of folktales as a cultural reality. A descriptive qualitative research method was implemented. The data used were the five English teachers’ teaching strategies. The study revealed that the teachers’ final goal was for students to understand the moral message in the folklore. The teachers were innovative in their teaching materials and approach in their EFL classes by integrating illustrations and other visual media related to folklore in language teaching. Visual media was believed to help language development and vice versa. The strategies included the use of videos with English subtitles, reading texts, questions and examples from real life. The teachers’ efforts were aimed at sharpening students’ analytical reasoning skills. Students needed to answer questions that strengthened their critical reasoning skills, identifying inequities and providing feasible solutions. Teachers, who had a crucial role in maximizing the advantage of using folklore, needed to tailor the story’s discussion to the students’ level of understanding. The outcome of the study inferred that the use of English translations of Indonesian folktales in the classroom potentially affected students’ English language development.
