Abstract

Indonesian EFL Learners experience erroneous speech in the process of learning the target language. Interlanguage, the errors that contain linguistic features which neither belong to the first language (L1) nor the target language becomes the focus of this study. The study aims to analyze the native and target language influence on the interlanguage produced by the students in their speech production. This study was designed in qualitative research approach. The oral responses produced by the students were recorded, identified, described, and explained. The results show that in the syntactic and lexicon levels, both native and target language influenced the students’ interlanguage production. Native language influence includes 1) the use of Indonesian syntactic pattern; 2) the use of Indonesian acronym; 3) the use of Indonesian words; 4) omission of –s in plural forms; 5) omission of to be; 6) subject deletion; and 7) the use of verbs. Target language influence is observed in overgeneralization of articles, the use of to be, and the overgeneralization of ending –ed in the past tense.

Abstract

Rapid changes in the 21st century require students to have not only theoretical knowledge but also high order thinking skills and communicative skills. Arguing that problem-based learning can be a good alternative for improving 21st-century skills, the present study will elaborate on the characteristics, syntax, strengths, and challenges faced in implementing problem-based learning in the classroom. Library research was employed to choose the references for supporting the arguments. Relevant articles were chosen from reputable international journals through Google Scholar, limiting the publication's date from 2015 – 2020, with keywords related to problem-based learning and developing 21st -Century skills. The results reveal that the problems proposed in problem-based learning must be real-life-based and require problem-solving skills. The syntax of the implementation can be adjusted based on the needs of teachers and students. Although problem-based learning might be intricate, suitable strategies can be employed to obtain maximum benefits from this approach. In short, problem-based learning is an appropriate teaching approach to be implemented to meet the needs of the 21st century.

Abstract

The improvement of students' speaking skills requires students to communicate with the interlocutors interactively. In the context of globalization, social media have become a medium of communication that can enhance students' speaking skills. The present study investigated what previous research had concluded on the use of YouTube videos to enhance the development of students' speaking skills by adapting George's (2008) model of library research into a qualitative design. The study revealed that YouTube videos had been proven to give better exposure to the students' speaking aspects like pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, intonation, grammar, and fluency. However, the use of YouTube videos also poses challenges, such as unstable internet connection, loss of interaction with peers and teachers, low comprehension of the videos, unsuitable length of videos, students’ low readiness and autonomy, and discrepancy between the videos and the language learning goals. These findings imply that while YouTube videos can be helpful learning tools, the right strategies need to cope with the challenges.

Abstract

Social media has become an integral part of life, including in the field of education. This study aimed to explore social media as a teaching and learning tool, its use, and its benefit for students of English as Foreign Language. This study applied library research from George (2008), where the sources of the data were previous studies on the use of social media in the context of English as Foreign Language, published in reputable international journals or accredited national journal ranked SINTA 1, SINTA 2, and SINTA 3, between 2015 to 2020. The review revealed that YouTube, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have been frequently applied as English learning media through various activities that matched the features provided by the respective social media. Their implementations in English learning have been argued to positively impact the students’ language skills, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, spelling, motivation, as well as their creative and critical thinking. These results reflect a positive attitude toward social media as an inseparable part of the students’ 21st – century learning contexts. However, more studies need to be conducted to optimize the use of social media for improving students’ English and their 21st-century skills.

Abstract

Karangan yang ditulis oleh siswa sekolah menengah pertama mengandung kalimat-kalimat salah yang  menggambarkan bahasa mereka.  Bahasa yang dihasilkan oleh siswa-siswa ini biasa dirujuk sebagai interlanguage (bahasa antara).
