Abstract

Chitosan is one of the naturally abundant, biodegradable, and low-cost adsorbent materials for metal adsorption purposes. In this work, we evaluated the application of chitosan materials derived from seafood wastes in Depok beach, Yogyakarta, for an effective recovery of the palladium(II) ions. First of all, the seafood wastes were treated to obtain chitin and then followed by the deacetylation process to produce chitosan material with a deacetylation degree of 78.42%. The chitosan material was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer. It was found that chitosan gave high adsorption percentage (90%) for palladium(II) ions due to the complexation with hydroxyl, amino and carbonyl functional groups. The palladium(II) adsorption onto chitosan material followed the pseudo-second-order (R2 = 0.9978) and Langmuir (R2 = 0.9979) models for kinetic and isotherm experiments, respectively, with a maximum adsorption capacity value of 0.70 mmol g-1. The palladium(II) ions could be easily desorbed in 90% percentage using 1.0 M HCl solution from metal-laden chitosan to regenerate the adsorbent material. The chitosan-based adsorbent material did not lose its adsorption capability after three consecutive cycles with no significant structural change as revealed from the FTIR data. These results showed the potential application of natural chitosan materials derived from seafood wastes for the effective recovery of palladium(II) ions.

Abstract

Peat is a wetland region in Indonesia with a very high water storage capacity. However, the amount of humic compounds obtained from the accumulation of organic substances in peat makes the water unable to be used for daily purposes. Peat water treatment with several methods has been carried out, such as coagulation, electrocoagulation, flocculation, and filtration. However, the result of clumping or filtering in such a way raises new environmental problems. One method which effective and efficient used in peat water treatment is photocatalytic. Several materials based-semiconductor was developed as a photocatalyst, another modification of photocatalyst is combining the adsorbent as a porous supporting photocatalyst which can improve its performance.

Abstract

The 4-nitrophenol reduction process is one of the slow methods. One way to increase the rate of 4-nitrophenol reduction reactions is to use a catalyst. In this study, the catalyst used was silver nanoparticles conjugated by black tea extract. The stages that have been carried out in research are the synthesis of conjugated silver nanoparticles of black tea extract, the determination of the kinetic profile of 4-nitrophenol reduction, and the study of the influence of inorganic anions on the reduction of 4-nitrophenol with the presence of silver nanoparticle catalysts. The presence of conjugated silver nanoparticles of black tea extract has been shown to increase the kinetics of the degradation reaction of 4-nitrophenol compounds to 85 times compared to without nanoparticles, by changing the value of the reaction rate constant from 0.00006 to 0.0051. The presence of inorganic anions provides information on the decrease in the rate of reduction reactions of 4-nitrophenol.

Abstract

The optimization of geometry and electronic transition of seven coumarin derivatives for sunscreen activity have been conducted using Orca. DFT methods is applied to find optimum geometry and parameter data is measured like bond length and bond angle. TD-DFT is conducted to get electronic transition to get ultraviolet (UV) spectra. The result shows that the coumarin derivative transition type is n to π* and π to π*. All coumarin exhibits the properties of UV-B protection, however, two out of seven show properties as a UV-A protection. The energy difference HOMO-LUMO shows that coumarin with isopropyl substituent has the smallest energy gap, around 0.1559, whereas coumarin with fluorine atom substituent has the biggest energy gap.
