Abstract

Rice bran and pollard are by-products of the rice and wheat milling process. These two ingredients are generally not used as the main raw material for food products and are diverted as feed ingredients due to their low nutritional content. The nutrient content that is still present in pollard and rice bran, especially fiber and anti-nutrients, is very useful for people with diabetes and obesity. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of sifting and fractionation on nutrient content and to separate the components of pollard and rice bran using a gravity and molecular weight approach. The experimental design used was CRD (Completely Random Design) Factorial 2 × 3 × 3 for physical test data. Factor A is the material, namely pollard and rice bran, factor B is the position of the fraction, namely top, middle and bottom. Data analysis was performed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the significant one will be further analyzed using Duncan's test. The chemical property values were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the value of bulk density (g l-1), compacted bulk density (g l-1), specific gravity (kg l-1), angle of purpose (o) of pollard and rice bran were significantly different (P<0.05) on all three fractions. The highest physical parameters for pollard were at the bottom fraction with the value 386.47 g g l-1, 537.28 g l-1, 1.42 kg l-1, ST 46.98o. The highest physical parameters for rice bran were at the upper fraction with the value of 394.09 g l-1, 526.33 g l-1, 1.50 kg l-1, ST 46.01o. Crude fiber content (%) of pollard and rice bran were the upper fractions 6.77 and 21.69, middle fractions 8.19 and 34.70, lower fractions 5.52 and 32.76. Fractionation technology can separate food ingredients based on chemical components, especially crude fiber with a molecular weight approach so that it can be seen whether the position of the fraction can be optimized or not as a raw material for making high-fiber biscuits. Physical and chemical properties of pollard and rice bran were best in the lower and upper fractions.

Abstract

Polysaccharides contain mannan (PM) from palm kernel meal (PKM) potential as leader pathogen microorganism and enhancing the immune responses. The objective of the study was to evaluate efficacy of PM as oral adjuvant in increasing AI H5N1 antibody titer and immunoglobulin A (IgA) in serum of broiler thirty chickens age 1 - 6 weeks were divided onto five groups and assigned randomly to five vaccine treatments i.e : un-vaccinated birds (R0A), birds vaccinated with antigen H5N1 + 0 µg PM (R0B), birds vaccinated with antigen H5N1 + 50 µg PM (R1), birds vaccinated with antigen H5N1 + 100 µg PM (R2) and  birds vaccinated with antigen H5N1 + 200 µg PM (R3). The results showed the treatment did not reduce broiler body weight (PM is not toxic). AI H5N1 antibody titer increased significantly (P0.05) one week after the first vaccination, serum IgA of broiler also increased significantly (P0.05) two weeks after the second vaccination. R3 treatment (200 μg PM) produce higher HI antibody titer ≤ 5 log2 and serum IgA 1.6 fold higher compared with those of broiler received R0A and R0B. It can be concluded that PM can increase the immune response in broiler chickens and can be used as an adjuvant for inactive AI vaccine.

Abstract

Chitosan is a natural compound obtained from deacetylation of chitin, which is a biopolymer present in the exoskeleton of crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp. The present study aimed to perform a meta-analysis from published studies regarding the effects of chitosan on methane emission and rumen fermentation profile of in vitro batch culture experiments. A total of 41 studies from 12 articles were integrated into a database. Parameters included were gas production, methane emission, rumen fermentation characteristics, microbial population, nutrient digestibility, and fatty acid profile. Data were analyzed according to mixed model methodology in which different studies were treated as random effects and chitosan addition levels were treated as fixed effects. Results showed that chitosan addition was able to reduce enteric methane emissions (p<0.001). Such methane decrease was accompanied by a decline in the protozoa population (p<0.05) and a tendency of methanogen reduction (p<0.1). The increasing chitosan level was associated with a decrease in total VFA and ammonia concentrations (both at p<0.001). Chitosan addition decreased acetate proportion (p<0.001) while elevated propionate proportion (p<0.001). Chitosan was associated with an increase of dry matter digestibility, crude protein digestibility, and neutral detergent fiber digestibility (p<0.001). Chitosan increased concentrations of C18:3n3 (p<0.05), conjugated linoleic acid (p<0.01) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (p<0.01) while decreased concentration of saturated fatty acids (p<0.001). It can be concluded that chitosan addition can mitigate enteric methane emission and alters rumen fermentation profiles in a favorable direction.

Abstract

This study used a meta-analysis to systematically assess the effect of antimicrobial peptide (AMP) addition on the number of bacteria, immune responses, and antioxidant activity of broilers. The database was compiled from 29 post evaluation articles that were found in search engines consisted of 36 experiments and 111 data. The mixed model method was used to assess the effect of AMP, with AMP addition level as a fixed effect and experiment as a random effect. The fixed effect was tested for linear and quadratic models. The quadratic model was retained when significant at p<0.05 but turned into its corresponding linear model when insignificant. In the starter phase, AMP addition decreased the number of bacteria in the ileum (coliform and total aerobic bacteria (TAB); (p<0.05), the caecum (Clostridium spp., Escherichia coli, coliform, and lactic acid bacteria (LAB); p<0.05), and excreta (Clostridium spp.; p<0.1). Similarly, the number of bacteria also declined in the ileum (Escherichia coli, p<0.05; TAB, p<0.1), the caecum (LAB; p<0.1), and excreta (Clostridium spp.; p<0.05) of broilers in the finisher phase. There were significant improvements in immune response and antioxidant activity in starter broiler, as indicated by the titer of Newcastle disease (ND) antibody, bursal index, spleen index, and thymus index (p<0.05) due to AMP addition. Variables of immunoglobulin M (IgM), cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4), ND antibody titer, bursal index, spleen index, and thymus index were also significantly increased (p<0.05) while superoxide dismutase activity (SOD activity) tended to increase (p<0.1) in finisher broiler following the AMP addition. In short, AMP addition is able to suppress the number of pathogenic bacteria and increase the immune response and antioxidant activity of broilers.

Abstract

This meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary propolis supplementation on broiler performance, carcass characteristics, and nutrient digestibility evaluated at the starter and finisher phases. An online literature search was conducted using scientific platforms of Science Direct, PubMed, and Google Scholar to identify the studies utilizing propolis as dietary supplementation in broiler chickens. A total of 39 publications comprising of 58 experiments met the inclusion criteria. A mixed model procedure for meta-analysis was performed, considering the studies as a random effect and levels of propolis as a fixed effect. Regression analysis suggested that average daily gain (ADG), body weight, and average daily feed intake (ADFI) at starter and finisher phases were quadratically affected by supplementing propolis in the diet (p<0.01). Propolis also lowered the feed conversion ratio (FCR) throughout the periods (p<0.05). In addition, a positive effect of propolis inclusion was also observed on breast meat percentage (p<0.05). However, there was a negative linear relationship between propolis and the digestibility of dry matter (DMD) and organic matter (OMD) (p<0.01) at the starter period. Conversely, there was a linear increase in DMD (p<0.05) and a tendency to improve apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and phosphorus digestibility at the finisher period (p<0.10). Overall, it can be concluded that dietary propolis supplementation promoted better growth performance and feed efficiency when given at ~1.66-2.13 g/kg diets for starter and finisher phases in the broiler chickens. The effect of propolis on nutrient digestibility was positive at the finisher phase while it was detrimental at the starter phase.

Abstract

High quality protein feedstuff prices for poultry are more expensive due to rising prices of imported raw materials, such as fish meal and meat bone meal (MBM). Utilization of an alternative source of protein that is abundant and does not compete with food needs, becomes one of the promising solutions to optimize production efficiency. This research will evaluate the potential utilization of black soldier fly (BSF) deffated larva mal as alternative source of MBM protein in quail feed on quail production performance by using method of decreasing fat (defatting) with emphasis (pressing). Female quail 5 weeks old as many as 285 birds. Quails devided in 3 treatments and 5 replications of each 19 tails. The experimental design used in this study was a complete randomized design (CRD). The feed applied was as follows: (P1) control feed, (P2) Feed with content 50% BSF (P3) feed with 100% BSF. The results of the study 50% and 100% subtitution of BSF deffated larva meal not significantly affected on egg production evidenced by no disruption of the production of eggs and raised 5.82% (P2) and 6.13% (P3) to feed control so that it can be concluded that deffated BSF meal alternative can be used as a substitute for MBM quail in feed. Abstract

Cassava has the potential use to replace corn as an energy source in poultry feed. However, the level of substitution is not optimal because of the difference ratio of amylose and amylopectin in maize and cassava. This study aimed to examine the effect of cassava flour with addition of isoamylase as a corn substitute in the ration on the performance of broilers. The material used in this study was 150 male day-old chicken broiler which were randomly divided into 3 treatments and 5 replications. The treatments were P0: 50% corn in the ration (control); P1: Substitution of 50% of corn by cassava flour; P2: Substitution of 50% of corn by cassava flour which contained 0.14% isoamylase. The variables measured were feed intake, body weight, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, income over feed and chick cost and mortality rate. Data from the complete randomized design were analyzed using Analysis of Variance, the significant results between the treatments were obtained by Duncan Multiple Range Test. The results showed that the substitution of corn by cassava flour without and with 0.14% isoamylase was not significantly affect final body weight, body weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio. The most profitable Income over feed cost obtained was the treatment of P2 that is Rp 6,543.50. It can be concluded that the corn substitution by cassava flour without and with addition of 0.14% isoamylase was able to produce the same performance as broiler chickens fed with corn in the ration for five weeks of the study.
