Abstract

Recognizing the ways teachers develop conceptual understanding of biological concepts bridges the gap between misconception and instruction.  This descriptive phenomenology explored the learning experiences of eight non-biology major science teachers on evolution. Thematic analysis revealed six emergent themes: (a) First exposure was faulty and insufficient; (b) Lack of content knowledge leads to advanced studies;  (c) Technology-supported learning resources facilitated learning process; (d) Rationalization of both old and new conceptions; (e) Application of concepts in different fields; and (f) Focusing on the big ideas. Overall, themes revealed that teachers developed a conceptual understanding of biological evolution through time and various means. Their adherence to the teleological beliefs leads them to experience confusion and misconceptions; however, as science teachers, they resolved the conflict to learning through content enrichment and professional development. A strong emphasis on the core principles of the Nature of Science and domains of biology in the curriculum across all levels and the teacher education program is imperative. Teachers can enhance their conceptual understanding and teaching efficacy through professional development and content enrichment.

Abstract

Individualized learning is an ideal form of intervention for students with intellectual disabilities due to the ability to accommodate the learning requirements of personal-social skills. Although there are contradictions in its implementation, special education teachers have tried to implement it. This survey research aims to identify teachers' experiences in carrying out individualized learning including aspects of forms, constraints, and impacts on students' personal-social skills. The data collection was retrieved through a questionnaire instrument fulfilled by 116 special education teachers in Yogyakarta, who were determined by purposive sampling and analyzed descriptively and quantitatively. The result shows that 88,2 % of teachers apply individualized instruction methods in the form of a classical learning design with functional academic material content. The main obstacle comes from teachers' perception regarding students' condition heterogeneity, which resulted in difficulties in designing the learning activity. The impact on personal-social skills for all aspects shows that 50%-80% of students are able to improve their skills through practice and repetition. In conclusion, individualized instruction applications varied according to teachers' perceptions. While constrained to accommodate each student's requirement, this learning method resulted in a positive impact on skill learning outcomes.

Abstract

The study aims to reveal the effect of inquiry learning model with modeling application to improve students' self-efficacy. Single-mastery and multiple-coping are used in the modeling. The study used nonequivalent pre-test and post-test control group design. The first experimental group received the inquiry learning model treatment with single-mastery modeling. The second group received received the inquiry learning model treatment with multiple-coping modeling. The direct learning model applied to the control group. Eighty seven students from three classes were taken as research sample using cluster random sampling technique. The treatment lasted for six meetings which were divided into one meeting every week. The instrument used is the physical education self-efficacy scale which was developed in this study based on Bandura's self-efficacy theory. Paired sample t-test and ANCOVA were used to analyze the data. In the two experimental groups, there was significant increase in students' self-efficacy through the application of the inquiry learning model with single-mastery modeling and the inquiry learning model with multiple-coping modeling. Inquiry learning model with multiple-coping modeling is more effective in increasing students' self-efficacy than inquiry learning model with single-mastery modeling and direct learning model.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced universities to change learning methods from face-to-face learning to online learning. This study aims to determine the effect of institutional pressure (coercive, mimetic, and normative) on the use of online learning in universities. This study uses a quantitative approach with a total sample of 357 respondents consisting of 42 lecturers and 315 university students in Yogyakarta and Central Java. This research employs an online questionnaire as a data collection media. The questionnaires were distributed and filled out by respondents from September 2020 to February 2021. The research shows interesting findings because pressure from regulators (coercive) is not a significant predictor of e-learning use. Whereas mimetic and normative pressures have a positive and significant effect on e-learning. This study also categorizes the findings into two groups i.e., lectures and students. Students assume that coercive, mimetic, and normative significantly pressure universities to use online learning. Whereas the lecturers think that the pressure from the regulator has no significant effect because health issues are the main priority. This study contributes to the literature by providing empirical evidence on the acceptance of e-learning technology during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This study aims to examine bullying tendencies among students in Indonesia. A sample of 689 male and female students was selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected through the Bullying Behavior Tendency Scale (BBTS), which consisted of 45 questions using a Likert scale, and were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the bullying tendencies were in a low category. However, it was discovered that 32.08, 4.06, and 0.87% of students were in the moderate, high, and very high categories, respectively. Additionally, it was observed that there are significant differences in bullying behavior between male and female students. These results provide a basis for understanding the role of school counseling services in reducing bullying behavior which is prevalent and can cause trauma. Therefore, it is essential to implement preventive programs to address the tendencies of some students engaging in this act at school.

Abstract

The future of Indonesian diversity is influenced partly by educational design and policy. In that sense, this study aims to analyze the actual and potential impacts of Kampus Merdeka's educational policy in strengthening multicultural encounters. Based on a specific context of Yogyakarta State University or Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), Indonesia, this study used the qualitative method to reveal the Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM)/Freedom of Learning Kampus Merdeka program in providing both actual and potential multicultural encounters, particularly in the Faculty of Social Sciences. The determination of research subjects was combining purposive and snowball sampling. The data analysis technique utilized an inductive approach for qualitative data analysis. The stages of data analysis consisted of data reduction, data display, conclusion, and verification, while validity checking employed triangulation. The study concludes that the MBKM program provides an experience and a cross-ethnic encountering spaces for students to share each other's diversity of identities. The encounters are through the three-semester learning rights program outside the study program. Cross-identity encounter in the MBKM program also allows students to combine aspects of concern for structural and cultural issues through a derivative program of three-semester learning rights outside the study program. The actual impacts of the MBKM program include providing spaces of strengthening multiculturalism, through students-exchanges, Center of Excellence (CoE) facilitation, and equal education for all. In addition, the needed regulations have been issued to provide the potential impacts to optimize for multicultural encounters through student exchanges, especially intercultural understanding or multicultural collaboration programs.
