Abstract

Mathematical representation skill is students' ability to express mathematical ideas (such as problems, statements, and definitions) in various ways to solve problems through multiple representations, such as images, words, tables, and symbols mathematics. Students are struggling in representing mathematical ideas. It hampers them in determining the solution of mathematical problems. They are careless in reading the word problems, lacking problem analysis, less thorough, and struggling to connect concepts. The subjects of this study were in two students from one of the junior high school in Jambi. The instruments used for this research were VVQ, Mathematical Representation Ability Test and interviews. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The results showed that the representation abilities of students with visualizer and verbalizer style were quite good. However, each subject had a different way of solving problems. Visualizers were more interested in questions with image information in solving the problem. Verbalizer tended to prefer information with detailed wording.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is In 21st century learning students are required to be more active in learning than teachers, therefore this study aims to determine whether there is an influence between the LAPS-Heuristic learning model and the ability to solve problems. Methodology: Using quantitative descriptive. Where, the number of samples in this study were 436 students from SMP 11 Jambi City who used purposive sampling technique. Data were then analyzed with the help of SPSS 21 application to find descriptive statistics in the form of mean, min, max, and category as well as inferential statistics using simple regression. Finding: The results obtained in this study are dominant both in the ability of student problem solving and the effectiveness of the LAPS-Heuristic learning model in mathematics lessons. With this, it is strengthened by the existence of a relationship and influence between the LAPS-Heuristic learning model and the students' problem solving abilities seen from the sig value below 0.025, which is 0.019 and has a contribution of 70.3%.

Abstract

This research serves as a reference for teachers to implement problem-based learning models on analytical thinking skills and science process skills in mathematics subjects. This research examines the differences and relationships between students' analytical thinking skills and science process skills with problem-based learning models in mathematics. The sample of this research consisted of 180 students. This research is a quantitative study with a questionnaire as the instrument. The obtained data were analyzed using the t-test and correlation test. The results showed a significant difference between analytical thinking skills and students' science process skills, especially on the indicators of Observation and Classification at SMPN 35 Batanghari and SMPN 8 Batanghari students who applied the problem-based learning model in mathematics. Furthermore, it was found that there was a relationship between analytical thinking skills and science process skills because students with analytical thinking skills possessed better science process skills in problem-based learning models in mathematics subjects.

Abstract

The study aims at (1) identifying the influence of PjBL-STEM and PBL on the mathematical creative thinking skills; (2) the influence of high, moderate, and low learning motivation on the mathematical creative thinking skills; and (3) identifying the interaction between PjBL-STEM & PBL and learning motivation on the mathematical creative thinking skills. The study itself is a Quasi-Experiment Research with Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The samples in the study are 66 Grade VIII students from 24th State Junior High School Batang Hari. These samples are drawn by using the total sampling technique in which the number of the samples is equal to the number of the population. Then, in gathering the data, the methods that have been implemented are observation, questionnaire, and written test. After the data have been gathered, the data are analyzed by using Two-Way ANOVA. Thus, the results of the study show that: (1) PjBL-STEM and PBL influence the mathematical creative thinking skills as having been shown by the significance value 0.000, which is lower than 0.050 (0.000 < 0.050); (2) high, moderate, and low learning motivation influence the mathematical creative thinking skills as having been shown by the significance value 0.000, which is lower than 0.050 (0.000 < 0.050); and (3) there is an interaction between PjBL-STEM & PBL and learning motivation with the mathematical creative thinking skills as having been shown by the significance value 0.030, which is lower than 0.050 (0.030 < 0.050).
