Abstract

AbstractTo face the global era, students in the twenty-first century must master the English language confidently and critically. One of the techniques for improving students' English language abilities is digital literacy. This research will look at how digital literacy is implemented to improve students' ability to master the English language and what challenges learners face when participating in these activities for elementary school students. It is an analysis based on the cultural characteristics of the western and eastern countries. The research methodology was content analysis. The writer gathered information by reading articles about the use of digital literacy in learning English. The findings verified some facts, such as the notion that using digital literacy in the classroom increases primary pupils' motivation for learning English. It also encourages students to learn new languages. Second, some children continue to have difficulty with digital literacy. Not to mention, some schools do not provide enough tools for students to apply digital literacy, which has an impact on classroom teaching and learning. However, further research on providing appropriate digital literacy based on kids' age or level of learning is required. Keywords: Eastern and Western countries, digital literacy, English language learning, young learner

Abstract

This study aimed to expose English language teaching practices and policies in Indonesia. This study employed a qualitative approach in the form of document analysis. Analyses were conducted on books, research papers, national policies, and curricular documents. From the inaugural curriculum in 1947 to the present curriculum in 2013, the Indonesian government has provided financing for English language teaching. In contrast, the 2013 curriculum gives less time to the teaching of the English language than earlier editions. From the perspective of training all Indonesians to become global citizens, language proficiency is required. Therefore, both teachers and students must have language competency. However, English language teaching as the main lesson at primary school levels is no longer compatible with current Indonesian educational policy. Hence, English is supposed to be taught in all school level with the goal of fostering global citizens with language proficiency, since being a global citizen in the age of globalization is inevitable.

Abstract

The knowledge of machine translation has great importance in the pre-translation process, particularly when translating a literary work. There were a plethora of studies about the translation of cultural-specific items (CSI) with machines. However, they have not addressed machine translation post-editing to improve its translation. This study aims at describing the semantic analysis in the translation of cultural-specific items (CSI) by machine translation (MT) from Indonesian into English, analyzing their translation and whether or not they have similar meanings between the source text and target text to get a better quality translation. Qualitative research using descriptive methods was applied. The data were 12 sentences of CSI in the form of concrete and five sentences of CSI regarding socio-cultural terms from the short story of Betawi folklore entitled Angan-Angan si Muin (Muin's Wishful Thinking). The result revealed that the 2nd generated the better translation in concrete. Both machine translations (MT) produced different translations for translating CSI of socio-cultural terms. Therefore, post-editing is taken to improve their translation with semantic analysis of relation meaning with primary considerations such as material, shape, size, function, and description. Machines translator (MT) helps us to work efficiently and improve accuracy. But, the results of machine translations must still be reviewed by human translators to ensure key quality requirements are satisfied, including fidelity or correctness, intelligibility or clarity, and style, so we need post-editing translation.

Abstract

Intercultural Communication Competence (ICC) is becoming more important nowadays because of the modern social issues in society. Previous studies tried to insert ICC into English Language Teaching (ELT) in order to help solving these issues. However, little attention has been paid to the dimension and components of ICC. Library research method was conducted with the script of the speech from Helena Merschdorf regarding intercultural communication as the primary source and several other books and articles as secondary resources. There are two primary aims of this study: 1. To analyse the components and dimensions of ICC based on Helena Merschdorf’s speech. 2. To know the components and dimensions of ICC based on Helena Merschdorf’s speech that can be inserted in ELT. The result indicate that the speech include all components and dimesions of ICC and each component and dimension of ICC can be inserted into ELT.
