Abstract

This study concern with semiotic analysis and explains the meanings that are conveyed by verbal and non verbalsign found in Victoria Secret Product Advertisements. In analyzing this study the method that used was descriptive qualitative method to conduct a clear and well organized descriptions bout the problem. In regards of the analysis there are two theories and one supported theory applied in this research namely theory of Saussure (1983) in analyzing signifier and signified of the sign. The second theory is denotation and connotation meaning by Barthes (1986). And the last supported theory by Wierzbicka (1996) theory of colorterms. The verbal signs is to convey the information from the advertiser to the readers, meanwhile non verbalsigns used to make the advertisement look cool, attractive and impressive, but still contained the meaning that related to the product that offered in advertisements. The researcher found there are 22 data of verbal and non verbal signs Which also carried two types of meaning, those are denotation and connotation meaning Both of verbal and non verbal signs contained connotative and denotative meaning. Verbal sign consist of explanation of the product and non verbal sign consist of picture and color.

Abstract

This study aims at (1) finding out the types of taboo utterances found in American Gangster movie, and (2) analysing the function of taboo utterances found in American Gangster movie. The data of this study were taken from a movie entitled American Gangster. The genre of this movie is crime drama. This study used descriptive qualitative method, by describing the word or phrase of taboo words from the movie. The qualitative method is applied in order to give clear analysis on the data according to the theory proposed by Battistella (2005) and Wardhaugh (2006). The result of this study shows that all types and functions of taboo words were found. First, there are four types of taboo words are epithets, profanity, vulgarity, obscenity. Vulgarity is the most dominant type used by the characters in the movie. Second, there are four functions of taboo words, such as; to draw attention to oneself, to show contempt, to be provocative, to mock authority. The most function of taboo words found in the movie is to show contempt. It is employed by characters in the movie. To support the analysis were used some dictionaries of taboo words. The phenomenon that usually happens in our life which nowadays many people used taboo words in their daily communication and it is one of the most efficient ways to expressing feeling in any situation.

Abstract

Figurative language often used in literary works, especially poems. It beautifies the language used in the poems. This study discusses about one of figurative types, that is personification, with is meaning found in Victor Hugo Poems. Personification is found mostly in the poems. There are two theories used in the study. The first is the theory of figurative language from Knickerbocker and Reninger (1974), and the second is the theory of meaning by Leech (1974) to analyze the meaning of figurative language. The method used in this study is a qualitative method. The researcher found 6 data of personification. Meanwhile for the meaning that the data have are categorized as conceptual meaning and connotative meaning.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study was conducted to find out and analyzed about the kinds and function of imperative sentence in Mata Najwa Trans 7 episode “Siasat Berebut Istana”. In every conversation, most of speakers use imperative sentence to give command or request to other. The common phenomenon is about different perception of people in understanding sentences in some conversations. Mata Najwa program as data source because it is one of the favorite programs in good rating that discussed and interviewed some people about biggest phenomenon in Indonesia. In an effort to data collection, recording with note taking technique was applied in methodology. The data were analyzed qualitatively descriptive using the theory by Swan (1982). The results of the analysis found in Mata Najwa Program are command, request, directive and prohibition. Imperative sentence as request is dominantly used.Keywords: sentence, imperative, matanajwa.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui dan menganalisis jenis dan fungsi kalimat imperatif dalam episode Mata Najwa Trans 7 “Siasat Berebut Istana”. Dalam setiap percakapan, sebagian besar pembicara menggunakan kalimat imperatif untuk memberikan perintah atau permintaan kepada yang lain. Fenomena umum adalah tentang persepsi orang yang berbeda dalam memahami kalimat dalam beberapa percakapan. Program Mata Najwa sebagai sumber data karena merupakan salah satu program favorit dalam penilaian yang baik yang membahas dan mewawancarai beberapa orang tentang fenomena terbesar di Indonesia. Dalam upaya pengumpulan data, pencatatan dengan teknik pencatatan digunakan dalam metodologi. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif kualitatif menggunakan teori oleh Swan (1982). Hasil analisis yang ditemukan dalam Program Mata Najwa adalah perintah, permintaan, arahan, dan larangan. Kalimat imperatif sebagai permintaan dominan digunakan.Kata kunci: kalimat, perintah, Matanajwa.

Abstract

ABSTRAKPada penelitian ini, teks yang diberikan kepada mahasiswa adalah bertema kepariwisataan dengan teks “Strolling Relaxingly on the Shore of Kuta Beach, President Jokowi Assured that Bali is Safe to Visit”. Dimana tujuan penelitian ini untuk melihat kemampuan mahasiswa semester 4 dalam mengaplikasikan teori terjemahan khususnya prosedur terjemahan dalam kegiatan menerjemahkan. Data dikumpulkan dengan cara note taking dan observation. Penelitian ini memfokuskan pada prosedur terjemahan yang dilakukan mahasiswa dalam menerjemahkan kata – kata yang berhubungan dengan pariwisata serta menganalisis alasan prosedur tersebut muncul dalam terjemahan mereka dengan menggunakan teori dari Newmark (1988). Secara umum hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada beberapa prosedur terjemahan yang sering diaplikasikan mahasiswa dalam menerjemahkan istilah khusus kepariwisataan ini, yaitu Naturalization, Through translation; karena mahasiswa cenderung melakukan terjemahan secara literal atau harafiah mengikuti susunan kalimat dalam sumber teksnya. Serta prosedur terjemahan cultural equivalent, shift/transposition, dan modulation.Kata Kunci: Terjemahan, Teks, Mahasiswa

Abstract

BSTRAKTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk (1) mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis kesalahan sintaksis pada paragraf bahasa Inggris yang ditulis mahasiswa, dan (2)menganalisa faktor-faktor yang mungkin menjadi penyebab kesalahan tersebut.Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian ini berupaparagraf dalam bahasa Inggris mengenai “kegemaran”. Data dikumpulkan dengancara tes tulis. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan taksonomi kategori linguistik,taksonomi siasat permukaan, taksonomi komparatif dan taksonomi efekkomunikatif. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa (1) kesalahan sintaksis yangditemukan berupa kesalahan pada frase kata benda, frase kata kerja, transformasiklausa dan struktur kalimat, dan kesalahan miscellaneous. Berdasarkan taksonomisiasat permukaan, kesalahan yang ditemukan adalah kesalahan penambahan,kesalahan pembentukan, dan kesalahan pengurutan. Berkaitan dengan kategoritaksonomi komunikatif, kesalahan yang ditemukan adalah kesalahan lokal, tidakmemengaruhi pesan yang ingin disampaikan penulis, isi pesan masih dapatdimengerti oleh pembaca meskipun terdapat kesalahan-kesalahan sintaksis padatulisan. (2) Kesalahan tersebut dapat disebabkan oleh faktor kelelahan, keletihan,dan kurangnya perhatian dan faktor dari kurangnya pengetahuan mengenai kaidahkaidahbahasa.Kesalahanini merupakan penyimpangan-penyimpangan sistematisyang disebabkan oleh pengetahuan pelajar yang sedang berkembang mengenaisistem bahasa kedua.Kata kunci: Kesalahan Sintaksis, Paragraf, Bahasa Inggris

Abstract

ABSTRAKPengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan Bahasa Inggris kepada masyarakat seiring dengan begitu pesatnya perkembangan pariwisata di desa Canggu. Permasalah prioritas yang dialami masyarakat desa Canggu yaitu kesulitan masyarakat dalam berkomunikasi menggunakan Bahasa Inggris dengan wisatawan asing. Hal ini melatar belakangi diadakannya kegiatan pengabdian berupa pelatihan bahasa Inggris komunikatif bagi masyarakat Canggu terutama yang bekerja pada jasa pelayanan pariwisata. Pelatihan ini menitikberatkan pada kemampuan speaking dan listening dengan tujuan meningkatkan kepercayaan diri peserta pelatihan dalam berkomunikasi dengan wisatawan asing. Pengukuran kemampuan kelompok sasaran ini dilakukan melalui pre-test sebelum pelatihan. Tingkat keberhasilan pelatihan diukur kembali dengan post – test yaitu test praktek langsung dengan tamu asing yang sedang menginap di villa. Test ini menilai susunan kalimat yang diucapkan, penggunaan kata yang tepat dan pengucapan. Hasil yang didapatkan diakhir kegiatan pengabdian adalah peningkatan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris yang signifikan dari peserta pelatihan dalam berkomunikasi Bahasa Inggris.Kata Kunci: Bahasa Inggris, Canggu, Villa.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The usage of preposition in Indonesian sentences may also happen in English sentences because preposition is part of both grammars. The forms of preposition that applied in Indonesian language and also applied in English language are simple preposition and complex preposition. Generally, preposition is determined by the constituent that follows, such as noun, verb, and adjective, and also its meaning. This rule is in both language, Indonesian and English. Therefore sometimes, there is one preposition is translated into some prepositions in English, where it depends on the meaning of the preposition. The scope discussions of this research are the translations of preposition di- and pada- into English by using the translations of 40 grade sixth students of Cerdas Mandiri Primary School, in school year 2010 – 2011 and analyze the meaning of preposition and the translation forms used. This research used qualitative method where the data were preposition di- and pada- and their translations in English. The students were asked to translate an Indonesian text ‘Pantai Kuta’ into English. The data then were analyzed by using the theoretical framework and also were explained in description. The general results of this research were preposition in and at were the general translations for preposition di- and pada-. But their usages in sentences could be determined by their meanings that were place and time. Preposition di- had dominantly meaning of place in its translation and also in SL, meanwhile preposition pada- had the meaning of place and time in SL but was commonly used to state the meaning of time in English. For the form of translation, it was formal equivalence used most of the time than textual equivalence with the purpose of trying to follow the system of the sentence in SL in translating it into TL to avoid delivering incorrect meaning. Abstract

Nowadays, code-switching has been widely used by the public in communicating on social media or directly. This study aims to analyze the types of code-switching from Indonesian to English and vice versa on Tasya Kamila Instagram Account. The descriptive qualitative method is used for this study to analyze the data. The data were analyzed using the theory from Poplack (1980). There are 3 types of code-switching based on theory from Poplack (1980) such as tag-switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching. The types of code-switching that use 5 data of tag-switching with percentage (8.62%), 28 data of intersentential switching with percentage (48,28%), and 25 data of intra-sentential switching with percentage (43,10%). Based on the results of research, Tasya Kamila is dominantly using intersentential switching in writing captions for each photo or video on her Instagram account.

Abstract

Slang occurs in any language of a region especially when people communicate in informal situations. This study focuses on identifying the types of slang words used by Neel + Jordan on their conversation through a podcast. The data are taken from their podcast on Youtube entitled Australian Culture. This study was done in order to make the viewers of the podcast easier to understand the content. The method conducted is descriptive qualitative. Observation and note-taking techniques are used to collect the data. There are five types of slang as follows: fresh & creative, clipping, flippant, acronym, and imitative based on the theory used from Allan & Burridge (2006). The writer formed the data using a table and conducted a description afterwards in order to make the analysis clear and the readers easy to understand. The result of the study was that there were five types of slang found in the Neel + Jordan Podcast.
