Abstract

Writing is considered a difficult language skill for students to master comprehensively. Therefore, it is necessary to improve students' writing skills in a meaningful way. This paper is therefore intended to discuss students’ improvement in writing skills through executing a demonstration technique. The data were collected through administrating pre-tests, post-tests, and questionnaires. The result of the study showed that students had various obstacles in learning writing and they were struggling to obtain a higher level of knowledge in writing procedure texts, however, through a careful and intensive implementation of demonstration technique, students’ writing achievement improved significantly from session to session in all classroom writing practices. Students were not only able to write better procedure texts but their works are much worthy as well. In a nutshell, students’ writing needs continually enhancing and demonstration technique is very much recommended to be implemented in classroom writing activities as an alternative teaching technique.

Abstract

Writing is a visual depiction of thoughts, feelings, and ideas using the written language for communication purposes or conveying certain messages. Having the ability to write, of course, allows humans to communicate ideas, appreciation, and experiences to others. Writing skill is possessed through intensive training and guidance which must be trained continuously to gain excellent writing skill. This study explores EFL learners’ writing ability in actualizing their skill in writing a descriptive paragraph. The study revealed that EFL learners’ writing ability is under expected skill. Therefore, this study implies that intensive improvement programs should be conducted by the educational institution to maximize learners’ writing skills

Abstract

Parents are the first and foremost educators in the process of child development by positioning the house into a multipurpose building full of meaning. This study aims to explore the discourse of informal education in building children's character during the coronavirus disease-19 (covid-19) pandemic. This study is descriptive-qualitative. Data collection was carried out by studying documents and literature. The results of the study showed that the emergence of Covid-19 was initially responded to normally like other viruses, but the increasing number of victims eventually caused panic which affected the socio-cultural community, Covid-19 forces people to work and stay at home more. Social interaction, face-to-face communication and being replaced online by taking advantage of the sophistication of technology, and the role of parents is important by placing the family as one of the pillars of education to instill the norms, morals, and rules of conduct in consistently carrying out the government programs to prevent and break the chain of covid-19 transmission

Abstract

Writing is one of the important language skills to communicate in written forms. Therefore, the improvement of writing skills is absolutely essential to be continually carried out. This study aims at developing writing skills by implementing a mind mapping strategy in the EFL classroom. There two cyclic learning sessions comprising planning, action, observation, and reflection were conducted in this study. The data were collected through administering pre-test, post-test, and questionnaires to the students who participated in this study. Based on the results of data analysis, this study revealed that students’ writing skills could be improved through implementing a mind mapping strategy. Therefore, this study implies that teachers should consider using mind mapping in teaching writing

Abstract

ABSTRACTLearning activities should be conducted effectively to create conducive learning conditions to develop students’ creativity and their higher learning competence. Through conducting appropriate and effective learning activities, the learning objectives and learning competencies are easier to achieve. To create effective learning activities, teachers are required to have adequate understanding and competence in employing learning methods. This study aims to explore effective learning methods to create more creative learning activities for the students. This study found several alternative learning methods that can be utilized in the time of the new normal of covid-19 to continually improve the students’ competence. This study implies that teachers should continually expose themselves to various learning methods to establish conducive learning conditions in the classroom. ABSTRAKKegiatan pembelajaran harus dilakukan secara efektif untuk menciptakan kondisi pembelajaran yang kondusif untuk mengembangkan kreativitas dan kompetensi belajar siswa yang lebih tinggi. Melalui pelaksanaan kegiatan pembelajaran yang tepat dan efektif, tujuan pembelajaran dan kompetensi pembelajaran lebih mudah dicapai. Untuk menciptakan kegiatan pembelajaran yang efektif, guru dituntut memiliki pemahaman dan kompetensi yang memadai dalam menggunakan metode pembelajaran. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggali metode pembelajaran yang efektif untuk menciptakan kegiatan belajar yang lebih kreatif bagi siswa. Penelitian ini menemukan beberapa metode pembelajaran alternatif yang dapat dimanfaatkan pada masa new normal covid-19 untuk terus meningkatkan kompetensi siswa. Studi ini menyiratkan bahwa guru harus terus-menerus mengekspos diri mereka kedalam berbagai metode pembelajaran untuk membangun kondisi pembelajaran yang kondusif di dalam kelas.

Abstract

This study examines the oral text of genjek in Karangasem regency with the main focus was analyzing the structure, function and meaning of oral text of genjek by using the theory of structure, theory of function and theory of semiotics. The theory of structure was used to analyze the structure of oral text of genjek. The theory of function was used to analyze the function of the oral text of genjek and the theory of semiotics was used to analyze the meaning of the oral text of genjek.The present study was a qualitative study with systematic study that departs from theory to observation on the availability of data for further analysis and data validation. The approach used in this study was a phenomenological approach that moved from the phenomenon of language used in genjek. The implication of this study is expected to provide benefits to the linguistic approach in studying the structure, function and meaning of the other texts and other literary works. In this study, it was found that oral text of genjek is literary work which has macro structure, super structure and micro structure. The function of genjek includes: entertainment function, education function, function of remembering the past, solidarity function, social control function, social protest and criticism function, and religious function. Meanings of genjek includes: meaning of love, meaning of the collective consciousness, meaning of ritual, existence of social stratification recognition. Creation process of genjek text is done together spontaneously by a group of people who are gathered together. Inheritance process of genjek is done naturally and non-naturally so that genjek can thrive in Karangasem society

Abstract

Creating an English learning environment in which learners are highly motivated is sometimes very challenging for EFL teachers. Folktales can be useful for facilitating learners in their competence of English language and also for enhancing their cross-cultural awareness. In the field of language teaching, the richness and potential of folktales seems to have been under-utilized in today’s language classes. This paper explores how folktales can be used as a medium of improving students’ reading skills and major benefits in using folktales for teaching English.  A classroom action research was employed to attain the purpose of this study in which two cyclic learning sessions were conducted to improve English learners’ reading skills. Several selected Indonesian folktales were intensively utilized in reading classes. This result of this study indicates that use of folktales by EFL teachers could improve student’ reading skill and widen their vocabulary and at the same time, culture is acquired by the students.

Abstract

Competence is one of the absolute requirements that teachers must have. Having adequate competencies, a teacher will be able to perform his duties as a professional educator and an agent of change. Therefore, education is not only aimed to equip children with various sciences and technology but also variety of life skills. Teachers are professional educators who have been trusted by society to educate and guide children. As a professional educator, a teacher must fulfill teaching requirements that has been regulated. Teachers should have four competences, i.e. pedagogy, personality, professional, and social competence. These competences are needed because the duties and tasks of the teachers to develop their students’ knowledge and skill as well as to build their students’ character. Competent teachers are found to have the ability to develop their students properly as suggested by educational curriculum in order they can survive in facing the global advancement of living.

Abstract

This research was conducted at SMK in Bali which aims to develop a model of communicative English test for SMK Tourism in Bali by involving students of English Education Study Program as the final project of language tesing. This research is conducted for two years using Research and Development method so that the developed product can be believed to be correct and accurate. The research was conducted because the crucial important problem faced by SMK Tourism teachers in assessing the ability of communicative English students so that teachers and students know their true ability in English communication in order to improve the quality of learning so that students will be ready to work in various tourism industries. In the first year, research was focused on establishing a communicative English test model based on analyzing an English test that already exists at SMK Tourism in Bali and then designing a model of Communicative English test for vocational students in Bali.

Abstract

Carrying out effective learning and appropriate classroom assessment during the coronavirus pandemic could be highly challenging for the teachers to do. Teachers need to utilize various technological devices to assess students' learning competence. This is due to online learning has become a priority in learning activities in the pandemic situation. This study found that English teachers implemented three types of online assessment strategies to improve students' learning competence during the pandemic of Covid-19 in Indonesia. Those strategies are online test administration, portfolio, and self-assessment. Several challenges were accoutered by the teachers in carrying out the classroom assessment through online systems such as slow internet network, expensive internet quota prices, limited access to computer and smartphone devices, poor ability in using digital technology, difficulty in conducting effective interaction. Feedback was occasionally provided when the learning processes were conducted through zoom meeting or google meet. The study implies that teachers should improve their communication technology ability and fulfill online assessment strategies' administrative procedures. HIGHLIGTS: Most teachers explain that they encountered similar challenges which were mainly about slow internet connection, expensive internet quota prices, poor ability in technology, and difficulty in communicating effectively with their students. The challenges encountered by the teachers were similar in their forms but the degree of difficulty depended upon the geographical location, economical background, and experiences in using technology Another difficulty encountered by teachers is providing feedback on the students’ assessment results. Teachers found it difficult to communicate directly to students to explain students’ problems in learning.
