Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental study is aimed at finding out if there is a significant effect of Know, Want to know, and Learned (KWL) teaching techniqueon the ability of the first year students of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru in comprehending report texts. The design of the study is one group pre-test-treatment-posttest design. There are 12 classes in the first year. As many as 36 students of class X IPS 3 in the first semester of academic year 2018/2019 are chosen as the sample by using cluster random sampling technique due to the particular class presents various characters of the whole classes like; academic achievement, the students’ learning seriousness toward English and the size of the classroom. The instrument of the test is in the form of multiple choice which consist of 25 items about report texts. To collect the needed data the treatments were conducted for six times. The students’ scores were analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) version 23.00 for windows. The results of the data analysis show that the mean score of the pre-test is 57.556 and the mean score of the post-test is 79.00. It means that the value of t-test is higher than t-table (11.055>1.95996) at 5% the significance level. Therefore, the alternative hyphotesis (H1) of this study is accepted. In other words, there is a significant effect of KWL teaching technique on the reading comprehensionability of the first year students of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru. The implication of this finding is be beneficial for the teachers in teaching and learning English especially in teaching reading.Keywords: Effect, KWL Teaching Technique, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental study is aimed at finding out if there is a significant effect of role play technique on the speaking ability of the third year students of SMPN 14 Pekanbaru. The design of the study is one group pre-test-treatment-posttest design. There are 8 classes in the third year. As many as 37 students of class IX 3 in the first semester of academic year 2018/2019 are chosen as the sample by using cluster random sampling technique due to the particular class presents various characters of the whole classes like; academic achievement, the students’ learning seriousness toward English and the size of the classroom. The instrument of the test is in the form of acting from script. To collect the needed data the treatments using role play technique were conducted for six times. The students’ scores were analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) version 23.00 for windows. The results of the data analysis show that the mean score of the pre-test is 51.24 and the mean score of the post-test is 60.42. It means that the value of t-test is higher than t-table (10.767>2.028) at 5% the significance level. Therefore, the alternative hyphotesis (H1) of this study is accepted. In other words, there is a significant effect of Role Play technique on the speaking ability of the third year students of SMPN 14 Pekanbaru. The implication of this finding is beneficial for the teachers in teaching and learning English especially in teaching speaking.Keywords: Effect, Role Play, Ability, Speaking.

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research is aimed at finding out the ability of the first year students of English Study Program, Universitas Riau in comprehending narrative texts. The population of the students were about 118 students. The sample were chosen by using cluster sampling technique, the sample size was as big as 78 students out of 118 students. The instrument of the research was a multiple choices test about narrative texts. The result shows that the mean score of the test of the first year students of English Study Program Universitas Riau is 73.77, categorized as good level. Based on the classification of students scores, there are 14 students (17%) are in excellent level, 50 students (64.1%) are in good level, 13 students (16.3%) students are in mediocre level and 1 students (1.3%) is in poor level. The lowest score of the components of the test is finding the generic structures of narrative text with the mean score 67.95, considered as good level. Meanwhile, the highest score of the components is finding references with the mean score 82.05, considered as excellent level. Therefore, it can be concluded that the ability of the first year students’ of English Study Program, Universitas Riau, is in the range of good level.Key Words: Ability, Comprehending, Narrative Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research is aimed to find out whether there are significant effect of Know, Want, Learned (KWL) Plus strategy on reading narrative texts of the first year students of SMAN 1 Rokan IV Koto.Thus, the problem to be discussed is: Is there any significant effect of using KWL Plus strategy on reading narrative texts of the first year students of SMAN 1 Rokan IV Koto. The design of the research was one group pretest-posttest design and conducted at SMAN 1 Rokan IV Koto. Cluster sampling method was used to select one class of students to become the sample. Some, 32 students of the first year students at the second semester of academic year 2015/2016 were chosen as the sample. The research sample was given treatment by using KWL Plus strategy as media in teaching reading. The instrument used was given the multiple choice test and the obtained data was analyzed by using SPSS version 16.0 for Windows. The results of the data analysis illustrates that there are significant effect of KWL Plus strategy on the students’ writing ability.Keywords: reading narrative text, KWL Plus strategy.

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study was to find out the second year students’ ability level of SMKN 3 Pekanbaru in reading comprehension. The design of the study is quantitative research paradigm. The population of this research were all the second year students of SMKN 3 Pekanbaru divided into 5 majors ; Hotel Accommodation, Culinary Art, Patisserie, Design Fashion and Beauty Class. The total number of the population were 266 students. In order to choose the sample and try out class, the lottery was taken. Culinary Art 1 was determined as the try out class while Culinary Art 2 as the sample class which both of the classes consist of 34 students. To identify the students’ reading ability, the reading test was administered. Before conducting the test, a try out was done in order to determine the reliability and validity of the test. The data were collected by administering a reading test to the students in the form of multiple choice. The result shows that the ability of the second year students in reading comprehension was classified into good level with the mean score of 70.53. There are three of reading components that can be classified into excellent (finding factual information, finding main ideas, and the meaning of vocabularies words). The other components are categorized into good level (finding references, finding inferences, and finding social functions. The other two components can be said as average level (identifying language features and identifying generic structures). The implication of the findings is that the second year students of SMKN 3 Pekanbaru should be well trained in aspects of language features and generic structures.Key Words: Ability, Reading

Abstract

Abstract : This descriptive research was aimed to find out the ability of the second year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts. The research data were collected on March 2017. The subjects of this research were class VIII 2 consisted of 30 students. The data were collected by administering a test to the students in the form of multiple choice test. The framework of the test covered with six kinds of descriptive text and each text has five question items. The test contained 30 items. Based on the data analysis, it was found out that the highest score obtained by the students was in finding factual information with the mean score of 87.5 categorized into good to excellent level, and the lowest score was in finding inference with the mean score of 68 categorized into average to good level. As a conclusion, the ability of the second year students of comprehending descriptive texts was in the average to good level with the mean score of 77.4. The implication of the finding is that the students should increase their comprehension in order to reach excellent level.Keywords: Students’ ability, Descriptive texts

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this descriptive research was to describe the students’ Language Learning Strategies in learning English. The population of this research was the second year students of English study program of FKIP Universitas Riau of 2014/2015 academic year. The whole number of the population is about 86 students. Due to the large population which is consisting of 3 classes, the random sampling technique is used. One of the classes is taken as the sample as many as 30 students. The adopted from SILL questionnaire (Strategy Inventory for Language Learning) version 7.0 is used to collect the data. The collected data were analyzed by calculating the scores of the students in answering the questionnaire and classified them to a certain level of SILL Profile of Result. The research finding can briefly explain as follows: First the result of the SILL shows that, the most often Language Learning Strategies used by the students is the Compensation strategies with mean score 3.90 (classified as High level). Then, the less frequent used strategies by the students is Memory Strategies with mean score 3.22 (classified as Medium level). This means that the students were very good in guessing intelligently in listening and reading but not too well in remembering when they are learning English. The suggestion is it would be better if they also can use the other strategies which are appropriate to their tasks, difficulties and learning objectives. Then, hopefully students can improve their English by using more language learning strategies in their learning to help learning easier, and enjoyable.Keywords: language leaning strategy, learning, English

Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed to analyze what syntactic errors made by the second grade students of SMK PGRI Pekanbaru in writing descriptive text. The populations were all of the second grade students of the school in the 2018/2019 academic year. The numbers of the samples were 30 students chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected by using written test. The data were analyzed by applying the rules of Corder (1974 in Barkhuizen, 2005) which consisted of five steps; 1) collection of sample of learner language; 2) identification of errors; 3) description of errors; 4) explanation of errors; and 5) error evaluation. Eight syntactic errors were found as the result of data analysis. They are: pronouns (25.9%), subject-verb agreements (22.7%), verb tenses and forms (14.5%), word orders (9%), articles (8.6%), prepositions (7.1%), plural nouns (6.7%), and passive voices (5.5%). The most frequent error made by the students were pronouns with a total of 66 errors (25.9%) and the least frequent error were passive voices with a total of 14 errors (5.5%). Based on the findings, there are three suggestions; 1) the students are suggested to be more concerned with the mentioned syntax items; 2) the teachers are required to give more attention regarding the students’ ability, to explain the lesson by using simple language, and to use various teaching methods in order to improve students writing abilities; and 3) future study is asked to conduct a research on the analysis of syntactic errors and the cause of the errors due to the limitation the of scope of this study.Key Words: Syntactic Error, Descriptive Text, and Writing Ability

Abstract

Abstract: Slang is confidential, informal English spoken which created and used by a particular community. This study discusses about an analysis of slang in Black Panther movie. The purpose of this study is to find the type and the meaning of slang used in a Black Panther movie. The source of the data was taken from the script of Black Panther movie. The Black Panther movie is classified as African action movies released on 14th February 2018 and directed by Ryan Coogler. The research design used in this study is descriptive qualitative research with a document or content analysis as the research type. This thesis described one by one word or phrase of slang found from Black Panther movie by using dictionaries and theory related about slang.From the analysis, there were three types of slangs, they were society slang, public house slang, and soldier slang. There were 8 words of society slang, 6 words of public house slang, and 1 word of soldier slang. Then the slang term in the form of words and phrases were classified and analyzed. The finding shows that there are some words and phrases of slang in Black Panther that have been classified into types of slang. The examples are Strap, Shit, Freeze, Baba, Guy, Chicks, Mate, and Feds.This research is expected to contribute to the reader's clear knowledge of slangs. It can assist the reader to talk fluent English. And fresh English vocabulary used in the daily discussion can also be anticipated to be enriched.Key Words: Slang, Movie, Black Panther

Abstract

Abstract: The research was aimed to develop and to find out the validity level of English instructional tools (lesson plan and students’ worksheet) by using Problem Based Learning as one of learning models suggested in the 2013 Curriculum.. The research design is developmental research design applied which 4D model by Thiagarajan (1974). To develop English instructional tool, there were three stages involved in this research, (a) defining stage which is done to set and define the product development requirements, (b) designing stage which is done to plan the draft of instructional tool and arranged it into the right format and (c) developing stage which is done to modify and validate the instructional tool. In order to find out the validity level of developing English instructional tools, the data were collected by using validation sheet of lesson plan and students’ worksheet. The English instructional tools, then validated by experts. Based on data analysis, the validation score of lesson plan is 91,61% and the validation score of students’ worksheet is 92,01%. Those results showed that the instructional tools in the form of lesson plan and students’ worksheet were very valid.
