Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research was to find out the effect of Small Group Discusstion Technique on the Ability of the Second Year Students of SMP N 5 Kerinci Kanan in Comprehending Report Texts. There were 98 population and only 32 students as the sample through cluster random sampling technique,instead cluster random sampling allows the writer to collect data into small, more effective groups. The test was carried out as pre-test. Thetreatmentwas applied by using small group discussion in reading report text and post-test. In order to know the difference between pre-test and post-test, and to testthe hypothesis, t-test formula was used. After analyzing the data, it was found that t-test score was 21.326 which t-table score in significance level df=32 was 0.349. Since t-test was higher than t-table, it can be concluded that alternative hypothesis was accepted. In other word, it can be restatedthat small group discussion can help students to improve their reading ability especially in report text.The implication of the finding is that the students should maximize the practice of small group discussion.Key Words:Effect, Small Group Discussion, Report Text

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to find out the ability of the second year students of SMPN 13 Pekanbaruin writing recount text. The population of the study were all second year students of 2019/2020 as big as 300 persons. Due to the big size of the homogeneus population, the simple random sampling isused to take the sample as manyas 30 students (10%). Writing test was administered to collect the needed data in the form essay of recount text. From the data analysis, it was found that the ability of second year students ofSMPN13 Pekanbaruwas in good level.The highest score is inoriginality. The lowestoneis in grammar. Therefore, the students are expected to study and practice more how to write a recount text based on the generic structure and seven writing aspects applied in curriculum 2013 especially in grammar.KeyWords: Writing, Ability, Recount Text

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive study aim to find out students’ ability in changing active sentences into passive voice, The study was conducted at the second semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. There were 37 students as the sample of this finding. The data were collected by administering a test to the students in the form of written test and were analyzed by using quantitative technique. The findings of the study are following: a.students’ score in changing active sentences to passive voice in simple past tense in the form of positive sentences is 63.00, b.students’ score in changing active sentences into passive voice in simple past tense in the form of negative sentences is 53.51, c.students’ score in changing active sentences into passive voice in simple present tense in the form of positive sentences is 67.02, d.students’ score in changing active sentences into passive voice in simple present tense in the form of negative sentences is 67.56, e.students’ score in changing active sentences into passive voice in simple future tense in the form of positive sentence is 52.4, f.students’ score in changing active sentences into passive voice in simple future tense in the form of negative sentences is 53.51. This finding can be concluded that the highest score was in changing active sentences into passive voice in simple present tense 67.56, which categorized into good level, and the lowest score is in changing active sentences into passive voice in simple future tense in the form of positive sentence 52.43 which categorized into mediocre level. The implication of the finding is that the second semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau should improve their ability in understanding the formulas for each tenses of passive voice, so they can change active sentences into passive voice properly and correctly in order to reach excellent level.Key Words: Ability, Changing, Active sentence, Passive voice

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research was aimed to findout whether or not there was a significanteffect of Jigsaw strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMKN 2 Kepenuhan Rokan Huluin comprehending recount text.This research design used one group pre-test and post-test. The sampleofthis research aretakenby using cluster random samplingtechnique and that falls toTata Busana class as big as25 students. The data were collectedby multiple choice tests.The data analyzed by using SPSS 23.00. The result of the data analysis showed that mean scoreof the pre-test was 59.50 and the mean score of post-test was 74.80. In other words, the mean scoreof the post-test was higher than the pre-test. The result also showed that the value of t-test was higherthan t-table (2.49 > 1.71) at significance level of 5%. It can be concluded that Alternative Hypothesis was accepted. Thus, there was a significant effect of jigsaw strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMKN 2 Kepenuhan Rokan Hulu in comprehending recount text. The implication of the findings was that thestudents shouldstudy in group like Jigsaw andmore focus on the given tasks to increase their vocabulary items.KeyWords: Jigsaw, Reading Comprehension, Recount Text

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research was aimed at finding out whether there is a significant effect of MindMappingstrategy on reading comprehension of narrative texts of the second year students of SMPN 13 Pekanbaru. Theresearch model was one group pretest-posttest design. The population were the second year students in academic year 2016/2017. The sample size was 40 students out of the population, chosen by using cluster sampling technique. The needed data were collected by administering a reading comprehension test of narrative texts in pre-test and post-test. The collected data were analyzed by using SPSS version 16.0. The finding of the research showed that the mean score of post-test was higher than that of pre-test (71.50>63.88). The value of t-test was higher than t-table (9.03>2.02) at 5% of the significance level. Therefore, alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that mind mapping strategy was effective for teaching reading comprehension in narrative texts. The implication of the finding was that the use of mind mapping strategy is a meaningful one in the part of the students in increasing the level of reading comprehension.Key Words: Mind Mapping, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to find out the effect of using Jigsaw method on the ability of the first year students of SMA PGRI Pekanbaru in comprehending narrative texts. This is a pre-experimental research conducted by using a pre-test – treatment – post-test design.. The population of this study was the first year students of SMA PGRI Pekanbaru which consisted of 3 classes with the total of 115 students. The sample of this study was X.2 of social science class with 40 students.The writer, during treat the students, found that students’ motivation to read the text increase. Besides, students got more confidences to split out their opinion while discussion and present the result in front of the class. After treatment was held, the writer distributed the tests. The instrument of the research was a reading test with multiple choice type. The result showed a strong correlation between Jigsaw method and students’ reading comprehension. The results of data analysis showed that the mean score of pre-test was 64.03, and the mean score of post-test was 82.00. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test because the t-test observed was higher than t-table. In other words, the alternative hypothesis of this research was accepted. It means that Jigsaw method can be used as an alternative strategy in the teaching of reading.Keywords: Jigsaw, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the ability of the second year students of SMAN 11 Pekanbaru in comprehending Narrative texts. The number of population is 256 students divided into nine classes. The researcher used random sampling technique to determine the sample. The samples were 54 students. The needed data were taken from the students’ score in comprehending narrative texts. The test comprehends five narrative texts of which all text has eight items or 40 items all together. The time allocation was 120 minutes. The result of the study revealed that the mean score was 65.56 which indicated that the students were in good level of ability. The highest mean score (73.7) was in finding references. The lowest mean score (51.48) was in finding the meaning of vocabulary.Key Words: Students’ ability, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Texts

Abstract

Abstract: This study was conducted to analyse the grammatical errors made by second semester students in writing paragraph at the English Study Program of Universitas Riau. The aim of this study was to find out eight types of common grammatical errors they are Passive Voice, Verb Tense and Form, Subject- Verb Agreement, Word Order, Preposition, Articles, Plurality, and Auxiliary that made by the participants of the study.Writing a paragraph test were administered to twenty seven participants. They were asked to write a paragraph in 90 minutes and based on the three topics provided by the writer. Three raters were involved in checking the grammatical errors on the participants’ paragraph writing. Then, the errors were classified and described. From the analysis, it was obtained that the participants of study made 80 errors. They were errors in terms of Verb Tense and Form (32.50%), Plurality (21.25%) and Subject-Verb Agreement (12.50%). The lowest percentage of errors was in terms of Word Order (5%) and Passive Voice (5%).Thus, it needs more concern on these aspects. Moreover, the other errors are need to be focused as well. It is recommended that other reseachers find the reasons of those comitted errors.Key Words: Error Analysis, Grammatical Errors, Writing Paragraph

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research was aimed to find out the ability of the first year students of SMA Negeri 2 Rumbio Jaya in retelling fairy tales. The research data were collected on July 2016. The subject of this research was class X1 consisted of 25 students. The data were collected by giving text to the students in term of fairy tales namely Putri Pandan Berduri, Keong Mas (The Golden Snail), Lutung Kasarung, Bunga Batu (The Stone Flower), and Bawang Merah dan Bawang Putih (Onion and Garlic). The students were asked to retell fairy tales in front of the class. During the students retelling the story, three raters were listening and checking the students’ performance. The students were given scores by three raters based on the five components of speaking namely pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Based on the research findings, it was found out thatthe ability of the first year students in retelling fairy tales is in mediocre level with the mean score 45.92. Then, the result showed that no student was in excellent level and 3 students (12%) reached good level. Furthermore, 15 students (60 %) were in mediocre level. Moreover, 7 students (28%) were in poor level and no student got the score in very poor level.Key Words: Students’ Ability, Retelling, Fairy Tales

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research was aimed at finding out how the ability of the second year students of SMKN 1 Benai in comprehending Recount texts. The sample was 2 Teknik Komputer dan Jaringan (TKJ) 1 (41 students) chosen by cluster random sampling technique. The result showed that the reading ability of the second year students of SMKN 1 Benai in comprehending recount text is in good level with the mean score was 65.60. However, this score was lower than the minimum score criteria is 75.00. The most difficult aspect in comprehending recount text was in finding references is 60.16 which was categorized into mediocre level. Then, the easiest aspect was in finding language features of recount text is 70.73 which was categorized into goo level. Based on research finding, it would be better to recommend as the follow. First, the students need to have more practice in finding references ability in reading activity. Second, the English teacher may increase the students’ motivation and encourage them to read recount text in English book as a part of practicing activities of comprehending recount texts.Key Words: Student’s Ability, Comprehending Recount Texts.
