Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this descriptive research was to describe the students’ ability in choosing the correct prepositional phrases for adverb phrase. The population of this research was the second year students of the English Study Program of Universitas Riau as big as 86 students of 2014/2015 academic year. Due to the population is very large, which consist of 3 classes, the cluster random sampling technique is used. The whole of number of the population is about 86 students. One of the class is taken as the sample as many as 30 students. The multiple choice test is used to collect the needed data of prepositional phrases for adverb phrase. The collected data were analyzed by calculating the scores of the students in answering the test and classified them to a certain level of ability in choosing the correct prepositional phrases for adverb phrase. The research finding show that the majority of the students passed in choosing the correct prepositional phrases for adverb phrase as big as 90%. This means that the students’ were capable to comprehend the test. The suggestion is that the unsuccessful students should learn more and read about prepositional phrases for adverb phrase. In addition, the teacher should give more explanation about prepositional phrases for adverb phrase for the group of the unsuccessful students.Keywords: ability, choosing, prepositional phrase, adverb, phrase

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out the grammatical cohesion of descriptive texts of students’ textbook “When English Rings A Bell” for the Seventh Year Students of Junior High School published by Pusat Kurikulum and Perbukuan Kemendikbud. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research. This method was pointed out to obtain clear description of the object base on the actual fact and valid data. The technique of analysis involved agglomerating, identifying, counting and making interpretation. The writer uses M.A.K Halliday and Hasan’s theory to analyze the types of grammatical cohesion. Based on the result of investigation that the writer has done, the grammatical cohesion of descriptive texts of English textbook "When English Rings a Bell" is cohesive text in “poor” categorize, since the rate of the percentage is 22.1%. It can be concluded that “When English Rings a Bell” textbook is less of cohesive device. It is suggested that grammatical cohesion in a text has important role as stated by Hasan (1968) cohesion occurs in a text if it has texture. In other words, a text is cohesive when the stretches of language are hung together with ties and give it meaning.Key Words: Analysis, Grammatical Cohesion, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out and analyze the students’ difficulties in writing recount text at the first-year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Terpadu Pekanbaru. The population of this research were the first-year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Terpadu Pekanbaru. The sample of this research was X ADP class, consist of 30 students who have been selected using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected by using writing test. The writing test were analyzed using ESL Profile Composition by Jacob (1981) through three raters. There are five aspects have been analyzed: content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanic. The findings of the research revealed that students got fair to poor and very poor level in content aspect, good to average and fair to poor level in organization and vocabulary aspects, and fair to poor level in language use and mechanics aspects. As the result of the research, it found that students have the difficulties in writing recount text for each aspects of writing especially in content, language use and mechanics aspects.Key Word: Analysis, Difficulties, Writing, Recount Text

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research was aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant effect of Jigsaw strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMKN 2 Kepenuhan Rokan Hulu in comprehending recount text. This research design used one group pre-test and post-test. The sample of this research are taken by using cluster random sampling technique and that falls to Tata Busana class as big as 25 students. The data were collected by multiple choice tests. The data analyzed by using SPSS 23.00. The result of the data analysis showed that mean score of the pre-test was 59.50 and the mean score of post-test was 74.80. In other words, the mean score of the post-test was higher than the pre-test. The result also showed that the value of t-test was higher than t-table (2.49 > 1.71) at significance level of 5%. It can be concluded that Alternative Hypothesis was accepted. Thus, there was a significant effect of jigsaw strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMKN 2 Kepenuhan Rokan Hulu in comprehending recount text. The implication of the findings was that the students should study in group like Jigsaw and more focus on the given tasks to increase their vocabulary items. Abstract

Abstract: This correlational research is aimed to find out whether there is a significant correlation between self-efficacy and the listening comprehension of the eighth semester students of English Study Program FKIP-UR. The sample was 35 students selected through purposive sampling technique. The instruments used in this research were the questionnaire on self-efficacy and the documentation of the students’ TOEFL listening comprehension score provided by the Language Centre of Universitas Riau. The research findings revealed that the self-efficacy of the eighth semester students of English Study Program FKIP-UR was at the average level (180.60), and their listening comprehension was at the mediocre level (49.83). The cross tabulation analysis showed that the students who had higher self-efficacy had a high tendency to have better listening comprehension score level. Based on Pearson correlation analysis, it was obtained that the correlation coefficient between students’ self-efficacy and the listening comprehension was 0.786 with the Sig. value=0.00. Hence, it could be concluded that there was a significant correlation between self-efficacy and the listening comprehension of the eighth semester students of English Study Program FKIP-UR. The interpretation of the correlation coefficient showed that there was a strong positive correlation between both variables. As a consequence, the null hypothesis was rejected.Key Words: Correlation, Self-efficacy, Listening Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the ability and the level of the first year students’ ability in comprehending descriptive text on heritage at MTsN 1 Dumai. The ability is about comprehending descriptive text on heritage in general and for each components of reading comprehension in terms of finding main ideas, factual information, the meaning of difficult words, finding reference and finding restatement. Before administering the test, it was tried out in class. Its purpose is to check the validity and reliability of the test. The data were collected by using descriptive text on heritage test in the form of multiple choice. The test contained 5 texts with 25 items. Based on the data analysis, it was found out that: the ability of the first year students in comprehending descriptive text on heritage in general is in good level with the mean score of 71.55. Then, the students’ mean score in finding the main idea is in excellent level with the mean score of 85. While, finding the factual information is in excellent level with the mean score of 90. Finding the meaning of difficult words is in average level with the mean score of 55.55. The next is finding reference is in good level with the mean score of 60. Finding restatement is in good level with the mean score of 66.66. Based on the findings of this study, it can be suggested that the students should learn more seriously on the part of meaning of difficult words which deal with the comprehend ability of descriptive text on heritage.Key Words: Analysis, Ability, Descriptive text, Heritage.

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research was aimed at finding out how the ability of the first year students of SMK Negeri 2 Pekanbaru in comprehending Recount texts. The design of the research was one class for try-out test and one class for real test. The population was the first year students of SMK Negeri 2 Pekanbaruin second semester of academic year 2016/2017. The sample was 27 students of class X.1 which were chosen by using cluster random sampling. The data were collected by giving 5 recount texts in form of multiple choices test. From the five texts, there were 30 items which focus on six components, they are finding main idea, factual information, references, meaning of difficult word, restatement, and social function. The results of the study revealed that the mean score of the students’ ability in comprehending recount texts is 57.51. It means that the ability of the first year students of SMK Negeri 2 Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts was categorized into average level. The highest score obtained by the students was in comprehending main idea with the mean score of 76.29 which was categorized into good level, and the lowest score that the students got was in comprehending restatement, with the mean score of 40.00 which is categorized into poor level. Based on the result of this research, it is suggested that the students to learn more about comprehending recount text, particularly about comprehending restatement.Keywords: Students’Ability, Reading Comprehension, Recount text.

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research was aimed to find out whether or not there was a significant effect of using Jigsaw Strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMPN 1 Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts. The research design was pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was VII HN chosen by using cluster sampling technique. The data were calculated by using Microsoft Excel 2010 and analyzed by using SPSS. The result of the data analysis showed that mean scores of the pre-test was 70.27 and the mean score of the post-test was 85.29. In other words, the mean scores of the post-test was higher than the pre-test. The result also showed that the value of t-test was higher than t-table (13.880 > 2.034) at significance level of 5%. It can be concluded that Hypothesis was accepted. Thus, there was a significant effect of using Jigsaw Strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMPN 1 Pekanbaru in comprehending Descriptive Texts. Several recommendations were given for students such as study in group like Jigsaw and be more focus to increase their vocabulary. In line with it, the teachers need to gave more attention on how to improve students’ comprehension when implementing Jigsaw Strategy in the class.Key Words: Effect, Jigsaw, Strategy, Descriptive Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aims to find out the ability of the second year students of MAN 2 Model Pekanbaru in comprehending hortatory exposition text. The population of this research were the second year students of MAN 2 Model Pekanbaru in academic year 2016/2017. The number of sample were 50 students which were chosen by using random sampling technique. The data were collected using reading comprehension test in multiple choice types by giving 5 hortatory exposition texts with 40 multiple choice items.The results of the data analysis showed that the mean score of the students’ ability in comprehending hortatory eksposition text is as big as 65.55. It can be concluded that the ability of the second year students of MAN 2 Model Pekanbaru in comprehending hortatory eksposition text is categorized good. Based on the result of the students’ ability in each of reading comprehension component, the lowest component of reading comprehension for the students was finding meaning of certain words (54.8) and the highest one was finding factual information (82). This result suggests that the students need to learn more in comprehending hortatory exposition text. Even though the mean score is classified in good level, but only few of students pass the minimum passing rate of their school.Keywords: Study, Ability, Hortatory Exposition Text.

Abstract

Abstract: The research was aimed to investigate whether problem-based learning (PBL) method can affect students’ speaking ability. The research was conducted at the first year exact science students of SMA Negeri 8 Pekanbaru. The number of the students was 324 in 9 classes. Due to the large population, the cluster random sampling was used to determine the sample, then lottery taking is applied with the result that X MIPA 7 and X MIPA 8 were selected. In conducting the research, a quasi-experimental method was applied in which X MIPA 7 as the experimental class and X MIPA 8 as the control class. There were 72 students as the sample of this research. This research design used one group pre-test post-test. Experimental class was taught by using PBL method and control class was taught by using conventional method. The pre-test at the beginning and the post test at the end of the treatment were administered. The collected data were analyzed by using independent sample t-test. From the calculation, it was found that Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 < 0.05. Since Sig. (2-tailed) was lower than α = 0.05, Hi was accepted. It means that there is significant effect in using problem-based learning (PBL) method on students’ speaking ability. The implication of the findings was the control group should be enhanced by the similar method to increase their speaking ability.Key Words: Speaking, Speaking Ability, Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Method
